Oil can't reach the shores!
by Milota Sidorova

American rescue teams are still fighting oil leak threatening the shores of Louisiana. Two days ago the boat carrying about 700,000 gallons (2.6 million liters) of diesel fuel on the board sank in the Mexican Gulf. The catastrophe took place only 45 miles (70 kilometers) from the nearest shores. The amount of oil could result in major environmental catastrophe. The platform had been drilling 8,000 barrels or 336,000 gallons of oil a day. Although significant amount of oil sank down to the sea, major part (around 97 percent) of pollution created thin but huge layer of oil, contaminating everything, touching the surface of the water. The situation was that serious that Britis! h BP oil giant sent robots to eliminate this smear and preventing the oil reaching the shores where a major part of wet lands were located. Wetlands are large shelter for plants and animals and they also clean and storage drinking water for larger areas. If hit by the oil, life would disappear such as water and the consequences would hit hard on inhabitants of this area.Satellite depicted the slick expanded around 50 percent in a day and reached the area of 600 square miles (1,550 square kilometers). BP sent there 450 tons and 50 feet high mechanism to embrace the slick and make it smaller. The company said it was the first time this kind of machine has been used. Rescuers saved around 115 survivors from the boat, but 11 more are still missing. According officials their chances are low. Even White House responded to the catastrophe when president Obama promised immediate and intensive aid to eliminate the chance of environmental disaster.
