Every single year we hear about tragic accidents in the mines around the world. Flooded mines in China or methane gas explosion in USA – all these underground disasters are killing hundreds of people annually. While miners from Chinese coal mines survived, those who were in mines in southern West Virginia didn’t have so much luck. Gas explosion killed 25 people what makes from this disaster the country’s deadliest underground tragedy in a quarter-century. But rescuers and family members are not giving it up. Just day after the blast rescuers began boring into the mine in hopes of releasing poisonous gases which is necessary for search of the men. People wa! iting out there hope the missing miners reached airtight chambers stocked with food, water and enough oxygen for four days. One of two chambers nearby was unfortunately empty. But they keep searching. Bulldozers carved an access road yesterday just to make way for drilling crews that should be done by today’s midday. Just like in case of Chinese mines’ owner, also the owner of the Upper Big Branch mine was fined in the past year for repeated serious violations. This time its ventilation plan and equipment was not sufficient. At the time of the explosion, 61 miners were in the mine. Some of them may have been killed by the blast, the others when they inhaled the toxic gases. Seven bodies have been recovered and identified; the names of remaining miners were not released. But it is not only grief what burdens mourners. It is also anger, that company officials couldn’t inform family members that people who made the mining company grow tragically died.
