Arizona introduces new law targeting illegal immigrants by Zuzana Zelenakova

Arizona Republican Governor Jan Brewer signed a new law targeting illegal immigrants Friday. The law has become the subject of a lot of criticism with US President Barrack Obama calling it “misguided”. According to the law, the state´s police can detain and question anyone that seems suspicious, even if they are not suspected of committing of another crime. Also, anyone suspected of being an illegal immigrant would be required to identify oneself with some kind of document confirming that they are proper citizens. "This bill supports law enforcement and safe neighborhoods and strengthens the laws of our state," said the Governor of the state that has the ! biggest problems with human and drug smuggling from Mexico. "It protects all of us, every Arizona citizen and everyone here in our state lawfully." Those who are against the law say that in case the person that police questions is eventually US citizen, his or her constitutional rights might be seen as invaded. Even President Obama became interested in the matter and ordered to keep an eye on it "and examine the civil rights and other implications of this legislation." He further said that the law might "undermine basic notions of fairness that we cherish as Americans, as well as the trust between police and our communities that is so crucial to keeping us safe." However, as a recent poll shows about 70 percent of Arizona residents are in favor of the law. 53 percent were worried that it might lead to civil rights violations. Mexico has warned that the measure could have an impact mainly on relations on the borders. The country´s Senate has already passed a resolution ! aimed at making Jan Brewer veto the law. The bill should come ! into for ce at the end of July or beginning of August.
