Florida Governor Charlie Crist could be that one who would turn present sad situation with Everglades and could make from his constituents a sugar power.

News conference on Tuesday morning near River of Grass revealed the intention of Governor Christ to buy United States Sugar Corporation for unbelievable 1.75 billion dollars. This acquisition would also count the 187, 000 acres of farming land in the northern Everglades. U. S. Sugar Corporation involves 1,700 employees and have 77-year-old tradition being found in 1931. If this arrangement comes true, it will mean the extinguishing of the powerful company and will raise the Everglades from the apparent death. Everglades is supposed to be a one of the world´s most ambitious ecosystem restoration projects.

Kirk Fordham, the executive director of the Everglades Foundation, could not believe his ears. He thought this can never happen in his lifetime.

Realisation of this purchase would give to hands of the state the power over 200, 000 acres- half of the sugar fields in the Everglades Agricultural Area. In spite of this, environmentalists hope the area wil be letf as natural storage reservoir, marshes of soft wet ground, or maybe the waterway connecting the near Lake Okeechobee with Everglades. This could help to heal the original north- to- south run of the River of Grass. These could also treat the natural habitations of dolphins, alligators, herons and some of the fytosystem beauties.

Governor Crist has been mentioned as a mate for Senator John McCain, Republican candidate for president. Crist will probybly initialise some breathtaking changes for Everglades, such as banning the sugar industry to let polluted runoff flow into the lake. He said: “ Putting your heart and soul into it really makes a difference“. And that is what is really important.
