WTC rebuilding schedule will be probably thrown out by agency
by Petra Kamenicka

Since a huge terrorist attack on September 11, 2001, there have been passionate discussions what to do with an empty place on which destroyed towers were standing. This symbolic place is called ,,The Ground Zero”. Several projects have been proposed. But each project had problems and delays because of political wrangling, arguments about the symbolism of this place and rising construction costs. A big problem, that must be solved is the logistics of building such a massive constructions of skyscrapers on such a small area. Projects, that have been submitted are delayed, over budget and previous estimations seem to be unrealistic. This is the reason, why The WTC owner proposed on Monday scrapping the schedule and budget for prolonged rebuilding plan of The Ground Zero. As Christopher Ward, executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey proposed that a committee of developers and government agencies will meet by the end of September. Their task on this meeting will be setting new, clear and achievable timelines. Gov. David Paterson asked in June for a progress report on this project. Christopher Ward write to him:,,The schedule and costs estimates of the rebuilding effort that have been communicated to the public are not realistic.”
The current plans and expectations are: opening date of the memorial, the first project on this site is in 2011. In this year, people will remind 10th anniversary of attack. The Freedom Tower and other skyscrapers will not be opened earlier than in 2013, according to latest expectations. A task of The Port Authority in now setting a new deadlines and working on several options to cut exaggerated costs.
There is some progress. A two years ago, the agency expedited development by negotiating a 99-year lease with Silverstein, the private developer. Responsibility for who would build what was shifted too.
