Oil ignorance
by Milota Sidorova
The oil crisis is calling red alert, but media, politics and even citizen of this world are successfull avoiding this topic. The world is behaving, like there was nothing happening. But there is something terrible happening. We are running out of cheap energy source. If you seek for these kind of information in mass media, rarely you find something relevant. Rarely you can find critics on current situation. So you stay in a position of sweet ignorance. According statistics, the last huge oil repository was found around 1996. Since then, nothing really important was found. But world politics didn't react and didn't warn their citizen that the golden age of oil was running ou! t of sources. We are running out of time. Instead of this, oil companies invested enormous amount of energy for seeking every possible location. The situation has been so desperate that even law protection were broken, the urge to control oil flow caused the war in Iraq and companies started to drill oil from the least effective locations. For instance location of oil tar sands in Canada was open. Nobody cared that the efectivity was far too low to pay back the investments, nobody cared for irreversibly destroyed environment, it seemed that oil was the aim at all costs. The same situation happened in Mexican Gulf. Former American President Bush broke law protection of these areas. Mexican Gulf locations were closed for decades of years, because they were in environmentaly sensible areas. But nobody cared for this. Nobody took the value of ecosystems into consideration. So the drilling had begun in Mexican Gulf areas. Bush proclaimed it and said it was in interest of America! to drill its own oil to support its needs. Last week, somethi! ng has h appened in Mexican Gulf. With suspicious background, the oil rig located only 70 kilometers far from Louisiana coast, exploded. For more than a week the whole effort couldn't stop the oil flow. Terrible amounts of oil have been leaking into the sea. Oil covered huge area, so huge that it would cover some countries in the world and the water flow took it to the shores. This is the end of life there. And now when even President Obama says the situation is extremely serious, we don't give a damn about it. There are people who profit on this catastrophy. What's the worst, we don't even think, we are the cause of this frantic drilling. With great satisfaction we drive our cars, using them with no modesty. We waste enormous amounts of electricity although we know it was generated with using oil and fossil fuels. We are fans of plastics and chemicals. We love our drugs, although we know most of them was created by using oil. People in Louisiana say the disaster was worse than the n! uclear bomb. They've lost drinking water. They've lost plants and crops, they've lost animals. The country is now changing into the wasteland with no sign of life. And no money, no oil were going to give it them back. But we don't give a damn about it. Yes. It's time to go to work. So better take our big car and waste another liters and liters of precious oil without any conscience. But there is something sure. It will be nature setting us the last strike. There will be no mercy, no humanity when it comes to extreme situations.
