Deadly tornado
by Zuzana Fabcinova

Year 2008, a particularly deadly year for tornadoes, has not ended yet. It has already brought 118 deaths connected with tornadoes, most recent of them less than a week ago. A heavy storm accompanied by hail and twisters roared through Midwest region in the USA on Wednesday, hitting Kansas, Minnesota, Nebraska and Iowa, and showed its dangerousness. Unfortunately, a boy scout campsite in Iowa, which stood in the way of the storm, had absolutely no chance to resist. The tornado apparently wanted to measure its strength with young boys, who were helpless against a rival like that. Without any warning, it was impossible to fight it. When the tornado hit the cabin where scouts sought shelter against rage of severe weather, four teen-aged boys were killed, while many others were more or less seriously injured.Highly admirable thing about this all is the fact, that many boys, right after the accident, didn't panic at all and immediately started to help their mates and tried to rescue them. Having clear, calm head definitely took much effort in a situation like that and only the best could do so. I can't imagine myself being able to keep cool and start to act or even think about what happened. Those little guys, those little heroes proved that they are not selfish or egoistic at all, as they didn't try to save their own lives before their friends'.Fate of mentioned four boys is terrible loss for their families along with other people who new them. If they only had a half of their friend-scouts' courage, we have just lost four fantastic young man, who surely had great lives before them.

Flooding in Upper Midwest continues
by Lenka Filipova

The capital of Iowa, Des Moines, is suffering at its worst. The level of the Cedar River is raising rapidly, thus forcing more and more citizens to leave their homes and move to area of higher ground. In addition to this, it has been stated that the hardest flooding impacts are on Cedar Rapids, a city of more than 124,000 people. According to the news, more than 438 city blocks are flooded. The Governor Chet Culver explained the seriousness of the situation as 83 counties out of 99 are to be announced disaster areas due to the fact, that nine rivers in the upper Midwest area are either on their flood levels or they exceed it. Well, this is the highest level ever crested. In 1993, the river level reached 19.27 feet, which was at that time considered the most disastrous flood in the history.Unfortunately, those who were evacuated and taken to the uptown hospital, are now bearing another danger. The thing is that water is getting to the lowest stories, where the energy emergency regulator is situated. Hence, the hospital is running the risk of losing the power, which may be fatal for several patients. A spokesman for the Cedar Rapids fire department, Dave Doch, emphasized the necessity to minimize the amount of water used. He told that they were using more water than producing. He, therefore, called upon the citizens to reduce their usage and use it only for drinking. It is fortunate that the weather forecast is not bleak anymore. Actually, the sunny and dry days are expected from the beginning of the week.

Chris Cantell Discusses US News: Live and keep on kicking
by Claudia Sonea

Life is a mystery and puzzles many people. The Bible, legends and myths are talking about people who used to live hundred and hundred of years. We don’t get to live that much nowadays. Maybe because of the pollution, maybe because God punished us for leading a shallow life, maybe we are dumb enough to obliterate our environment. No matter what would be the answer, the truth is that we no longer achieve such ages. As it is, whenever there is someone who overcomes the age of 100 and still looks beautiful and full of energy, we tend to be surprised and watch it as a unique thing. That is why C. Yardley Chittick of Concord at the age of 107 manages to get attention and be honored so many times, as he himself admits to be. He was chosen to lead the alumni parade on Saturday at his former Massachusetts preparatory school, where he graduated 90 years ago. He is the last surviving member of the class of 1918 at Phillips Academy in Andover. However, it is not only his age that makes him special. Like the fact that he turned down no one other than Thomas Edison who offered him a job 150-question test shown at the Thomas Edison Museum. Why do you think he did it? The answer is simple: because he preferred a job in the golf club industry that sounded more enjoyable; a surprising decision as he graduated MIT and became patent lawyer. Chittick was sent by his uncle to Andover to prepare him to attend the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he had an argument with a fellow student who was the amazing actor Humphrey Bogart. Chittick confesses never to have liked Bogie and that is why he refused to polished the actor’s shoes. At 107, he looks more lively and young than ever. His sense of humor is still remarkable and manages to stun me every time. What do you think about it? Let me know…

New Orleans Repairing Its Levee System
by Milota Sidorova

Weather has been always the wild, black horse, too smart to get caught. Its sinister volatility and unpredictability, typical for past few years calls on the red alert. First it was Myanmar tragedy, then the Olympic antilogy victim China, now the world's press is overpowered by the flood cause in the U.S.It seems, that somehow we have got used to hear the death tolls from there and over there. But an interesting reading for one means life strike for another. However it is, it's always good to hear some news about technology progress, method, political movements, or even a system of measuring enabling to protect people in advance.Last news from New Orleans, Louisiana refers that the city Congress fell into rescue aid system, giving the local research center, Corps of Engineers almost $5,7 billion. Indeed, it was New Orleans wasted terrific hurricane Katrina in 2005. People haven't forgot about it. Now, when American middle West suffers from the floods, forced to evacuate thousands of homes, New Orleans speeds up repairing its levees barriers. According to last technical reports, the previous one is on many places 'out of work', simplt too low, too fragile to handle a storm of category 2-3. The center has focused all its energy into new Global Positioning System (GPS) technology, that should measure and predict the storm menace even more correctly. System, located on moving vehicles skews different factors from topography, storm's wind speed, size and intensity. The center believes that it will supply current anti-flood orders and define safe levee height, able to stop the weather spouts. But even after completing system, there will be always risk of failures. Congress declared that the protection levee system should be finished in 2011. This time it won't accept the corps's break downs such as levee breachers, that caused the main devastation during Katrina.

Same sex marriages allowed!
by Zuzana Fabcinova

U.S. state of California has recently integrated into a mediocare group including seven countries (Netherlands, Belgium, Canada, South Africa, Spain, United Kingdom and Norway) and two U. S. states (Massachusetts and Iowa), where same sex marriages are no longer illegal.Due to this right, hundreds of homosexuals all across the country decided to say “yes” to their partners. As some of them say, it is now or never. They are afraid that this regulation will be canceled after November election and their opportunity to get married with their loved ones will be lost for longer time again. That is why they wanted to take their unique chance and hurried to have a wedding. The ceremony itself was quite special along with the participants wearing various eye-catching clothes and audience, who came to show their support of gay and lesbian marriages.Of course, this event didn't pass without the attention of dissenters of same sex marriages, who expressed their opinions about homosexual partnerships, claiming that such relationships are abnormal, unnatural, perverse and weird. Signs, posters and yells of protesters didn't discourage couples in love from official affirmation of their sympathies.Gay and lesbian community has always been considered controversial. Discussions about normality or abnormality of such couples will probably last forever. Neither have we got rid of stereotypes and prejudices about homosexuals, seeing gay men as effeminate, fashionable and promiscuous and lesbian women as butch, man-haters and radical feminists. These people must unrarely face discrimination, in some cultures even violence. Being a gay or lesbian in some countries may even mean going to prison or being sentenced to death penalty. This long-awaited step of Californian government has brought at least small breath of change. Homosexuals in other countries unfortunately can do nothing more than hope that this act will be an inspiration for other legislators.

Underwater
by Milota Sidorova

Flooded Mississippi is about to reach its maximum this week. Till this day, the rising danger has caused at least $1,5 billion damage in overpowered millions acres of agricultural area, inundated villages and road system. States Iowa, Illinois and Missouri are facing the worst scenario, that is about to overcome historical floods from 1993. Most of their levees are endangered by extremely strong stream of the river and one, situated near the city of Gulfport has broken overnight. Helicopters, boats and all terrain vehicles are operating all over the country. The highest priority is to fixate remaining levees by sandbags. Then to evacuate inhabitants. According the reports, not solitary farms nor whole communities are spared.Despite the current damages, officials suggest, that the consequences could have been even worse, unless the massive innovation of the land in 1993. Flooded area has been bought out and changed into natural park. Almost 9,000 homeowners moved into further, safer cities. However, there are still some, who have remained. The ones, who strikes the water element once again. That is also the story of Elkport, the city, that has disappeared from the map's surface long time ago. Government paid almost $1.6 million to engross all 80 real-estates in the village before knocking it down. Some has moved to the twin city on the other coast of the river, some have disappeared so.Floods, threatening American middle West since the end of May, have caused unbelievable increases of corn, wheat, soya and meat prices. Investors fear that one of the most fertile U.S. Regions will impact the yield in catastrophic way. The fact is, that almost 5 million acres of fields currently sleep underwater.Even President Bush has promised the financial supply to befallen region. However, he has only gained tough Democratic critics, pointing on bleeding economy and jerking national debt.

Sen. Edward Kennedy is recovering
by Beata Novomeska

Sen. Edward Kennedy underwent risky, 3 1/2-hour surgery last Monday. He had a malignant glioma, a lethal type of brain tumor. The brain tumor was diagnosed a month ago, when he was hospitalised in Boston hospital. Then he underwent chemotherapy and radiation. The surgery improved the success of them. His surgeon, Dr. Allan Friedman, said that he “is making an excellent recovery.” Senator will continue in his recovering at home before starting the next phase of treatment. It was statement of his office. Senator was thankful for the extraordinary care of doctors and nurses and for prayers and well wishes from the people all over the country. When he came home, he was very glad. He said it was “good to be home” together with his family. He had on the head wide-brimmed hat and told reporters he felt “good to be home, good to be here.” His son Patrick Kennedy stated that he is doing well after surgery and he is so happy going back to the place he loves. He loves ocean. After a few hours he went out sailing together with his wife Vicki. It was the same routine as when she returned back after diagnosing his malignant tumor. A malignant glioma is one of the worst kinds of brain cancer and it is diagnosed in about 9.000 Americans a year. His son Patrick Kennedy told that his father is looking forward to returning to the Senate and working with Barack Obama, Democratic presidential nominee, on universal health care legislation. He is now thinking about it and his son adds that he has to recover because he can get health care for the millions of people who don't have access to the care that we do. Dr. Allan Friedman says that the senator a his wife are courageous and positive people which attitude is a lesson for us all.

Chris Cantell Discusses US News: Senátor Edward Kennedy sa zotavuje
by Beata Novomeska

Senátor Edward Kennedy podstúpil riskantnú 3 ½ hodinovú operáciu minulý pondelok. Mal zhubnú gliomu, smrteľný druh mozgového nádoru. Mozgový nádor bol diagnostikovaný pred mesiacom, keď bol hospitalizovaný v Bostonskej nemocnici. Potom podstúpil chemoterapiu a ožarovanie.

The floods are back
by Barbora Misakova

There are the cases when we are really helpless. There are a times when a man can do nothing to help himself or others. In the cases when the nature with its strength comes and destroys everything around and we can do nothing, just watching. Desperately watching. Everything what we loved, what we built is in a few minutes destroyed and gone. Not only material things, but also our memories, our past and sometimes even our beloved ones. If there is any justice in this world, then we can say that only nature with its devastating power is fair – it behaves to us as we do to it. Of course sometimes it is more cruel than we are able to imagine and expect. The latest floods in the Middwest of the U.S. left incredible masterpiece of destruction. Lot of houses was destroyed, or better say washed away, dams and levees were breached or over topped, and what is more 10 people have died and even more stayed homeless. Rivers and reservoirs in the Iowa, Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin had big problems, and most of them weren't able to keep pressure of water. Levees failed for example along the Embarras and Wabash rivers in Illinois. Problems with raising water hit also Indiana's White River, where national guardsmen and prisoners were laying sandbags to make levees higher. Although people are doing their best, they cannot avoid the after affects which will follow. Not only absence of financial resources for rebuilding houses, but also big loses on the U.S. corn crop. Long time lasting rains and floods in the U.S. led to 3 percent trim. It is not needed to say how strong effect could these results have on the global economy, especially in the time of urgent demand for food. So what is the message of this long continuing story? All this just lead to one idea – protect what we have - protect the nature, because it is much more powerful than we are able to understand. It is giving us back everything we gave to it, but the worst on the whole is that lot of innocent people is suffering because we are not able to respect the mother nature.

Chris Cantell Discusses US News: Záplavy sú späť
by Barbora Misakova

V prípadoch, kedy príroda svojou silou prichádza a ničí všetko naokolo a my nedokážeme robiť nič, len to sledovať. Sledovať so zúfalstvom v očiach. Rieky a priehrady v Iowe, Illinois, Indiane a Wisconsine mali veľké problémy a väčšina z nich nebola schopná odolať náporu veľkého množstva vody. Chrániť si to čo máme, chrániť si prírodu. Pretože tá má oveľa väčšiu moc ako všetky peniaze sveta, a túto silu nebudeme nikdy schopní odhadnúť, a nikdy jej nebudeme rozumieť. Príroda nám však vždy vracia len to, čo sme jej sami dopriali.

Chris Cantell Discusses US News: Senador Edward Kennedy se está recuperando
by Veronika Pellerova

Chris Cantell behadelt Die US Nachrichten: Überschwemmungen sind zurück
by Barbora Haramiova

Verzweifelt zuschauen.

Chris Cantell behadelt Die US Nachrichten: Überschwemmungen sind zurück
by Barbora Haramiova

Verzweifelt zuschauen.

Chris Cantell Discusses US News: Smrtiace tornádo
by Zuzana Fabcinova

Silná búrka sprevádzaná krúpobitím a tornádami sa v stredu prehnala americkým regiónom stredozápadu, zasahujúc Kansas, Minnesotu, Nebrasku a Iowu, a ukázala svoju nebezpečnosť. Zachovať si jasnú, chladnú hlavu v situácií ako táto určite vyžadovalo obrovskú snahu a vypätie všetkých síl a to môžu dokázať naozaj len tí najlepší. Ak by mali len polovičnú odvahu svojich priateľov – skautov, tak sme práve stratili štyroch fantastických mladých mužov, ktorí pred sebou iste mali úžasné životy.

Chris Cantell Discusses US News: Unde se indreapta Yahoo?
by Claudia Sonea

Chris Cantell Discusses US News: New Orleans intenzívne obnovuje mestský protipovodňový systém.
by Milota Sidorova

Medzi sústom obloženého nízkokalorického chleba, prehĺtame desať tisíc obetí zemetrasenia a predtým, než definitívne zrastieme s povrchom pohodlnej sedačky sa nám do uší dostane správa o tisíckach, nútených opustiť svoje domovy. Na počasie sme si už zvykli. Nečudo, veď tieto katastrofy nemožno vyčítať žiadnej politickej moci, lobistom, teroristom a iným -istom. Miestnému výskumnému centru Corps of Engineers dokonca prisľúbilo takmer 5,7 miliardy dolárov. Prirodzene, bolo to práve New Orleans, takmer zrovnané so zemou ničivým hurikánom Katrina. Ľudia na tragédiu nezabudli. Strach o majetok a blízkych je ešte príliš čerstvý. A právom, veď lousianské pobrežie patrí medzi hurikánmi najohrozenejšie oblasti Štátov.

Chris Cantell Discusses US News: Tornado mortal
by Veronika Pellerova

Along Iowa`s Cedar River were ordered flood evacuations
by Ivana Macakova

After overflowing of Iowa`s Cedar River the citizens of towns lying along the river were ordered to evacuate. Levee on Cedar River was protected by sandbags but officials called for extra volunteers to help them. Waterloo which lies downstream ordered immediate evacuation of about 60 homes and businesses. In Cedar rapids also more than 200 citizens were evacuate from homes which lies near the river. Town between Cedar Falls and Cedar Rapids was on Wednesday without electricity because of rising water which affected city`s power plant. The culmination of Cedar River was expected during the night and they expected also flooding downtown area of the city though the spokeswoman said that sandbags should held.Overflowing of Cedar River threaten also towns along Mississippi River, so they were warned that they can expect flood crests. The National Weather service has predict crests of about 10 feet along Mississippi River and also higher numbers in the Missouri and Illinois. Towns along Mississippi are protected by dams, but areas which lie further from them could be deluged. In Wisconsin this month they had a record in rain falling so they monitored each dam. They also planned to ease pressure on dams by draining some reservoirs behind Primmer Dam.Officials in Wisconsin are also worried about plant losses. One county announced yet the losses in $5.5 million in soybeans, corn and hays. On Wednesday in Indiana one levee was burst and was flooded a lot of farmland.People in Minnesota hoped that last weekend's flooding wouldn't repeat.Minnesota and and North Dakota were affected by the strong winds. Because of it the officials had to close some roads. Near Valley City a barn was damaged and a cow was sent into the air.

V meste Vinton, ktore lezi medzi medzi Cedar Falls a Cedar Rapids v dosledku stupajucej hladiny vody v stredu vypadla elektrika. Vyliatie rieky cedar tiez ohrozuje mesta pozdlz rieky Mississippi, takze obyvatelia boli varovani, ze maju ocakavat zvysovanie hladiny rieky a pripadne zaplavy. Narodna meteorologicka stanica predpovedala maximalne hodnoty okolo 10 stop a tiez zvysovanie hladiny v Missouri a Illinois. Minnesotu a Severnu Dakotu naopak postihli v tychto dnoch silne vetry, kvoli ktorym museli byt zatvorene niektore useky dialnice. Blizko Valley City zas vietor znicilstajnu a odvial niekolko krav.

Chris Cantell Discusses US News: Las inundaciones regresan
by Veronika Pellerova

Chris Cantell behadelt Die US Nachrichten: "Tornadosaison" hat bereits begonnen
by Barbora Haramiova

Chris Cantell behadelt Die US Nachrichten: Großer Brand in Sierra Madre, Kalifornien
by Barbora Haramiova

Man konnte keine Bulldozers einsetzen.

Chris Cantell Discusses US News: Un incendio grande en Sierra Madre, California
by Veronika Pellerova

Chris Cantell Discusses US News: Oheň na úpätí hôr v Los Angeles
by Lenka Filipova

Chris Cantell Discusses US News: Grand inendie à Sierre Madre, La Californie
by Kristina Popovicova

by Dominika Haberova

by Veronika Pellerova
