The floods are back
by Barbora Misakova

There are the cases when we are really helpless. There are a times when a man can do nothing to help himself or others. In the cases when the nature with its strength comes and destroys everything around and we can do nothing, just watching. Desperately watching. Everything what we loved, what we built is in a few minutes destroyed and gone. Not only material things, but also our memories, our past and sometimes even our beloved ones. If there is any justice in this world, then we can say that only nature with its devastating power is fair – it behaves to us as we do to it. Of course sometimes it is more cruel than we are able to imagine and expect. The latest floods in the Middwest of the U.S. left incredible masterpiece of destruction. Lot of houses was destroyed, or better say washed away, dams and levees were breached or over topped, and what is more 10 people have died and even more stayed homeless. Rivers and reservoirs in the Iowa, Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin had big problems, and most of them weren't able to keep pressure of water. Levees failed for example along the Embarras and Wabash rivers in Illinois. Problems with raising water hit also Indiana's White River, where national guardsmen and prisoners were laying sandbags to make levees higher. Although people are doing their best, they cannot avoid the after affects which will follow. Not only absence of financial resources for rebuilding houses, but also big loses on the U.S. corn crop. Long time lasting rains and floods in the U.S. led to 3 percent trim. It is not needed to say how strong effect could these results have on the global economy, especially in the time of urgent demand for food. So what is the message of this long continuing story? All this just lead to one idea – protect what we have - protect the nature, because it is much more powerful than we are able to understand. It is giving us back everything we gave to it, but the worst on the whole is that lot of innocent people is suffering because we are not able to respect the mother nature.
