There is special kind of turtles living mostly in the California and Hawaii cost. They are called loggerhead sea turtles. Loggerheads are already classified as threatened species under the federal Endangered Species Act, but the environmentalist and nature protectors think that higher level of protection is needed.Loggerheads are characterized by a lagre head with blunt jaws and five scutes along the middle of the carapace. Adults grow to an average weight about 100 kg, and can reach 1 m in length. This kind of turtles is very unusual and they are the only living member of the genus Carreta. Characteristic feature about them is their nesting habit almost always at the same place where they were born themselves. "Normal part of the population" almost never think about some turtles living far away in the deepness of the sea. Fortunatelly there are some special people who sacrificed their life to protection of endangered animals that are in jeopardy of their extinction. Living in the innocent ocean is not as easy and natural as it was before. Turtles need to face the danger of fishermen who very often hurt them with loaded fishing hooks or mesh them into their nets that they put along the beaches in the length of 60 miles or more and so there is possibility to get enmeshed in the net and become unable to get out.The nature is different today and aminals have much more difficult life than ever. It's up to us, who make their lives more complicated, to help them survive and enable to propagate themselves freely and safely.

After hurricane Katrina hit in 2005, the U.S. authorities took immediate action and passed a bill that created tax deductions for those contributing to the area's recovery and development. Those wanting to build hotels and casinos were excepted from the rule of deductions, but the additional businesses that function around them, such as attached hotels, are still able to benefit from the lowered tax. This measure is very beneficial for all wanting to make money out of this area. Luxury condos have started to appear in Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama and provide great living conditions for those who are able to pay up to $1 million. But the problem here is that the people in most need of help, who have seen their house wiped off the face of the Earth, can not afford such a hefty price if they live in a caravan. They don't even benefit from this tax reduction, because the rule doesn't apply to those that buy houses or land for personal use. Real estate developers will be able to claim a first-year depreciation deduction equal to 50% of the value invested in the property and they may receive some money for demolition and cleanup, also from the government. Help for a devastated region and its residents has turned into big business for real estate companies. It's not even clear how the boundary of the affected area was set and why it got as far inland as Tuscaloosa, where Katrina's effect was diminished. The worse part is that money for the builds isn't actually put to use entirely: most of the projects that received funding haven't been started yet, after two years from the tragic event.

Erin hits Texas, while Dean is closing in on Caribbean islands by Corina Ciubotaru

It's been a very strange year for Texas. It rained like crazy all summer, ending the state's ten-year drought and now Erin is about to hit. Yet another girl-named weather phenomenon formed in the Atlantic on Tuesday and became a tropical storm on Wednesday after it reached the required sustained speed of 40 mph. It hit Copano Bay first then it reached Houston and calmed down a bit, bringing winds of 35 mph and rain that stopped traffic in the middle of the city. It had been too close to land to become a hurricane, luckily. Floods are expected all across Texas, especially in the Hill Country and the Corpus Christi area, which have so far received almost twice the rainfall they're used to. Other hurricanes are on their way, too. Dean became a genuine hurricane out in the Atlantic, with wind speeds of 90 mph and now threatens the Caribbean islands. Because of it, tropical storm warnings have been issued for the following islands: Dominica and St Lucia, Antigua, Barbados, Barbuda, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Monserrat, Nevis, St. Kitts and St. Maarten. A tropical storm warning means the storm is expected to hit in the next 24 hours. Tropical storm watches mean the storm is coming in 36 hours and they have been issued for Martinique, Guadeloupe and Grenada. Flossie swept through Hawaii, but with less force than expected. The hurricane season will go on until November 30th and may result in as many as 16 tropical storms.

Dean is still in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean and is heading for the Lesser Antilles, where it is supposedly going to hit on Friday. Barbados is expecting it within 24 hours, while for the islands of Montserrat, Nevis, St Kitts, St Maarten and St Vincent, a tropical storm watch was issued, meaning the hurricane is due in 36 hours. Residents on these islands might be in luck as the last Dean to hit, in 1989, passed over Sable Island, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and caused no damage or deaths, even though it reached maximum wind speeds of 169 kilometers per hour. But chances are this year's hurricane may not be as gentle, as it is expected to become a Category 3 hurricane by Saturday and may bring around ten inches of rain in some mountainous areas. The hurricane season in the Atlantic is just beginning and will last until November 30th. It is expected to sweep the U.S. and the Atlantic islands with nine potential hurricanes, of which three to five may become major.

Following a series of departures among Bush's aides, which included Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, top aide Karl Rove and press secretary Tony Snow, homeland security adviser Fran Townsend has also announced her departure in early 2008. Her replacement will be announced before the departure because the President needs the two to overlap, so as not to leave the Homeland Security Council unsupervised in the middle of all the wars where the U.S. is involved. Fran Townsend has led the Council for 4 Â∏ years and now plans to find a job in global risk management, after struggling for months with the decision of whether or not to leave the White House. Her replacement will have a difficult task in making sure no terrorist attacks occur in America during the upcoming elections. Madrid and Glasgow have been attacked after their last elections so the White House advisors want to make sure nothing happens between the vote and the inauguration ceremony. Townsend has not ruled out the possibility of her returning to public service some day, even under the lead of her former boss and mentor Rudy Giuliani. The two speak very highly of each other's work, and the security advisor declared her passion for public service. Still, she apparently needs to take some time off and take care of her two small boys, leaving national security matters in the hands of someone else. Hers is a tiring job that some say should be integrated in the National Security Council, but that she wants to keep separate, in order for the Homeland Security Department to have better communication with the President.

One of the significant questions is illegal immigration to the country mainly from South America and Mexico. Giuliani opinion is to have virtual fence along the U.S. - Mexican borders. He prefers to build physical fence only in some places where needed and use high-tech monitoring system with more border petrol agents along the whole border. This non-radical measure is criticized from many sides. Some of the rivals claim that this is not enough and it is not going to solve or stop illegal immigration to the country.Giuliani is the most experienced leader in the group of candidates though and as former New York City mayor he had to deal with illegal immigration all the time. He was also leading the city in the time of terroristic attacks during September, 11, 2001 what makes him dignified and solid challenger in coming presidential election. He has experiences from functioning as United States Attorney, or working in Regan Justice Department. The winter has already arrived. This sentence meant, in the past years, beautiful white snowflakes falling from the sky, frozen lakes full of ice skating people and a lot of winter fun. But as the global threats get more serious, the seasons start to go crazy. The summer time was incredibly hot and now the winter changes the land into the north pole. Someone could say: "It can't be that bad?!", but the Americans know better. The United States of America have been surprised by a sudden snow storm this week. Especially the central states like Oklahoma or Kansas were struck very heavily. It let almost 500 000 homes and businesses without power when it took down power lines, trees and made the road impassable. Therefore many emergency shelters of the Red Cross have already been filled with people who couldn't stand the lack of power. In other states the problems have not been that bad, but still a big part of schools canceled their classes and the snow caused a lot of traffic jams. But the worst is not over. The weather specialists forecast another cold blast for Friday. One hit after another. The recovery time was not enough to overcome the difficulties from the first storm and here comes the other. As a consequence the region is preparing them selfs, since they don't want the situation to get completely out of their hands. "We get crews out around three in the morning to examine the roads and the bus routes and determine whether or not they are safe," says Clarence Stukes of Arlington County School. "As soon as the first flake comes down, we have the salt trucks going out," said VDOT spokesman Mike Salmon. It looks like the situation will get under control with all these preparations made, and we can only hope that the weather is going to unbend and won't destroy the rest of what's left, so that the people can return to their home and live their normal life.

Too much snow

Less than a week after an ice storm blamed for at least 38 deaths, mostly in traffic accidents, in the middle of the country, another winter storm hits the Northeast of US, affecting roads across the Great Lakes states and into New England. According to the National Weather Service, Michigan and Indiana all the way to Maine are in danger of winter storms; furthermore, because on parts of the Chicago area and Ann Arbor, Michigan, a foot of snow had fallen, the weather forecast showed that 18 inches were possible in northern New England and that there was a chance of 14 inches in parts of Michigan. The winter storm is already blamed for three deaths cut visibility and iced over highways with a wind-blown brew of snow and that is why Maine State Police Sgt. Andrew Donovan advised people to stay indoors, at least until it calms down a little bit and the visibility of less than 200 yards gets bigger. Every available plow truck has been sent at work in Vermont (10 inches) said Reggie Brown, highway department dispatcher in Montpelier. On Sunday, Illinois Department of Transportation spokesman Mike Claffey revealed that 1,000 trucks were out clearing snow. Everything was affected by the storm: hundreds of flights at airports in Chicago were canceled at airports in the Northeast, including in Portland, Maine; Buffalo, N.Y. and Manchester, N.H. (airports in Philadelphia, Boston and New York were less harmed); churches called off Sunday services, etc. Still, the New England Patriots vs. New York Jets game at Foxborough, Mass., was still attended by many fans that had to shovel the snow off their seats. Also, in Buffalo, Bills fans that rose early for a bus trip to Cleveland for a game against the Browns went on despite the hazardous driving conditions. Unstoppable were the Christmas shoppers too. The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission reported 160,000 of their customers were left in darkness by the storm on Sunday. Duane Nichols, deputy director of the State Emergency Management Agency, confessed that the 14,900 Missouri homes and business remained without power Sunday morning represents a decrease from about 165,000 on Tuesday. It could be the end of the nightmare, but who knows. The winter is called and it is still at the beginning. Stay indoors and stock up, because you're going to need it.

CIA subpoenaed

After the event of 11 September al-Qaida members were hunted by all the secret agencies in America and terrorists are treated harshly at the interrogation. It is a matter widely known and the media approached it frequently. Still, now the Congress is dealing with an older event regarding the harsh interrogation of two al-Qaida suspects in 2002 by the CIA and not because it is really interested in what happened to the terrorists, but because the tapes documenting the investigation were destroyed in 2005. The House Intelligence Committee launched an entire trial of the event and among the first ones that received a subpoena on Thursday was Jose Rodriguez, the former CIA head of the CIA's National Clandestine Service who directed that secret interrogation videotapes to be destroyed. The hearing on 16 January is more a formality due to the fact that Rodriguez is ready to tell the truth or at least what he thinks is the truth; however, his attorney, Robert Bennett, who also once represented President Clinton, two former secretaries of defense and New York Times reporter Judith Miller, said that it is better to issue a subpoena. Some of the questions that the House Intelligence Committee has are: who authorized the tapes' destruction; who in the CIA, Justice Department and White House knew about it and when; and why Congress was not fully informed. And the most important question remains what was on the tape so compromising that it had to be destroyed. For all this to find an answer, the CIA opened files to congressional investigators Thursday, inviting them to the agency's Virginia headquarters to begin reviewing documents and records related to the videotapes. Bush assured in repeatedly occasions that he first found out about the destruction earlier this month CIA Director Michael Hayden briefed him. Committee Chairman Silvestre Reyes is leading the investigation and on his list of witness that is still unfinished there are names like Alberto Gonzales, who served as White House counsel and then attorney general, who advised against the destruction. Another one is John Bellinger, then a lawyer at the National Security Council, who also came against the destruction. Both Gonzales and Bellinger refused to make any comments, but the fact that White House recommended in 2003 that the tapes should not be destroyed raises the question who then ordered it. Reyes will start the investigation on 16 January with testimony from Rodriguez and acting CIA general counsel John Rizzo, who received CIA approval for the testifying. Furthermore there is also the request for CIA attorneys Steve Hermes, Robert Eatinger, Elizabeth Vogt and John McPherson, former CIA directors Porter Goss and George Tenet, former deputy director of operations, James L. Pavitt and former general counsel Scott Muller to testify before the committee. Besides witness, Reyes is using also documents like a May 2004 memo Muller wrote recording details of a meeting with White House officials. The meeting took place right after the scandal with the unfolding Abu Ghraib prison abuse and the White House pleaded against the destruction. Reyes and the committee's top Republican, Peter Hoekstra of Michigan, requested for all documents, cables and records regarding the taping of detainee interrogations to be delivered and also demanded for testimony from Rizzo and Rodriguez at a planned December 18 hearing, but the CIA showed they are not so willing to cooperate and stalled the fulfilling of the request. The matter might become a criminal case and the Justice Department was called in a federal judge courtroom Friday to determine whether the destruction of the tapes violated a court order to preserve evidence about detainees. The outcome of the story is pending until after January, so stay connected.

Strong storms, floods, snowing, canal ruptures followed by freezing weather. That's how the current situation in some southwestern states of US looks like. Nevada is affected by levee break, long-lasting storms hit Californian towns and furthermore in some parts avalanches are being expected.Crazy weather conditions caused a few deaths as well. Near L.A. a woman was killed after her truck was swept into a flood channel. Many people were rescued from atop homes. The sound of helicopter can be noticed constantly. What' s even worse, the stormed ripped down almost 500 miles of power lines deteriorating the case much more.Natural disasters are always a part of our weather, our climate. No matter what century, what nation, they sometimes occur and we tend to get powerless despite all the technologies we developed. Is there a way we can avoid them and keep us safe? Without electricity we have serious difficulties to survive. Let's face it: our own inventions obstruct the way of life.The weather forecasts aren't reporting any big improvement in the next days. Hidden in the snow

6 snowmobilers were rescued in Colorado after 3 days missing. Jason Groen, his wife and daughter and one of his employees with wife and son were snowmobiling in southern Colorado mountains when they got lost, ran out of gas and consequently get stacked in the middle of nowhere. Fortunately there was a cabin where they were able to survive out of coldness and snowstorm outside. The area was under the avalanche warning at that time and there was no way to get there even for rescues. Groen could not find a signal for his cell phone in the cabin and it was too cold and too dangerous to go outside until Monday morning when they called and have been rescued.This is a story with happy ending. How many people are not so happy and find their end in the snow every winter? Sportsmen are crazy for adrenalin sports during the winter. Nature is so different, calm and peaceful and the power of avalanches and snow cover is like a magnet that needs to be discovered. We are looking for an adventure and forget about our safety and all the safety measures. Some people are lucky because mountain rescuers risk their lives everyday to find tourists underneath avalanche attack or in the woods where they lost their orientation. We need to realize that this is not a standard for our lives. We need to be careful and keep ourselves protected and safe because once we can lose even a cell phone we are carrying everywhere with us.
