A delta of Mississippi is still being violated
by Ivana Bruderova
The residents of the state of Louisiana and several biology institutes and universities warn that the delta of American's longest river is being terribly destroyed and need our help. The delta was formed over the thousands of years by mudding sediments and it created it's own unique ecosystem. It was at the beginning of the last century when the Mississippi's delta was a place of wetlands, and marshes. Then this place became an oil-drilling center and thousands miles of oil canals scared the country. New information appeared about why the hurricane Katrina damaged The New Orleans so much. In the past when the administration or president was talking about this disaster they blamed global warming or the French buildings which had been built three hundreds years ago. But scientists claim, guilty are the oil companies which have been damaging the natural barriers against the hurricanes situated in Mississippi's delta. Due to their activity in this area the wetlands are drying and the whole ecosystem is violated."I remember when I was a young boy we had camp out in the marsh", said Don Griffin one of the residents living near the delta. "The same places you used to have to go around with a pirogue and a push pole now you can go with a 25-foot outboard. There is no more marsh, which is your first barrier to defense for hurricanes."The oil companies such as Exxon Mobil Corp. denied they are guilty for the drying of wetlands and land loss. They said there are many reasons for this including unstable geology and nutrias, animals brought here in the 1930's that have been feeding at vegetation of delta. The voice of the rich oil companies is louder now, but the scientists believe their arguments and studies will persuade the politicians to make a restrictions for the oil industry in the delta of Mississippi.
