Women on board!
by Zuzana Zelenakova

On Tuesday, US officials informed that the Navy plans to lift the ban that prevents women from serving on submarines. Submarines have been the only class of ships in the United States, aboard which women could not serve. Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates informed Congress about the Navy´s intentions Monday and Congress now has 30 days to ponder it. Of course, such a decision would have to be followed by a lot of technical changes to submarines, nonetheless, this year Naval Academy graduates could be the first Navy women on board of subs. If Congress approves the policy shift, women will step on board of submarines as active naval officers for the first time since 1900! , when the US submarine force was created. Women were allowed to serve aboard military ships in general in 1993. At the time, the Navy also claimed that the reason for keeping female naval officers off the submarines is the fact accommodating women on them would be expensive. Most likely opponents to the ban lift would normally be the Republicans, however, these days they are busy preventing gays from serving in military. Chairman of the House Armed Services Committee Ike Skelton said will allow women to subs in what he called a “phased approach”, for example, women will at first serve only at larger submarines. "Decision to allow women to serve on submarines will present challenges, but these challenges should not be insurmountable for the Navy," Skelton said. When it comes to the issue of women in US military, officials announced Tuesday they might reassess barring women from combat roles. The thing is women are not allowed in infantry units. "I believe that! it's time that we take a look at what women are actually doin! g in Ira q and Afghanistan, and look at our policies," said Gen. George W. Casey, the Army chief of staff.

La fragilité du corps humain sous-estimée ?!
by Barbora Misakova

'Hôpital Presbytérien de New York jeudi dernier.

Underrated fragility of human body?!
by Barbora Misakova

I always considered health to be the most important thing from all. When some serious illness hit our body then we realize importance of being fit and healthy. But life in capitalistic society is based on different rules. If I had a history of heart problems and underwent bypass I would be much more careful. I know for sure I would try to limit my work and I would invest all my time and precious energy into something really meaningful. Sure, if you are known politician everything seems meaningful, but is it? Latest news informed us that Bill Clinton had chest pains and had to undergo another heart surgery. The procedure which should open blocked arteries was served at a New! York Presbyterian Hospital on Thursday. As Clinton’s spokesman said, former U.S. President had experienced chest discomfort and his doctors decided to check it up. One bypass graft from operation he underwent five years ago became obstructed and so doctors inserted two stents into his native coronary. The latest incident comes after Clinton, 63, traveled back and forth to Haiti to support the country devastated by earthquake month ago. As Douglas Band, counselor to Clinton said in a statement: “President Clinton is in good spirits, and will continue to focus on the work of his Foundation and Haiti’s relief and long-term recovery efforts.” Is it a good idea? I don’t think so. A man, whose heart refused to obey just even once, should be conscious of how fragile he is.
