Human beings are characterized by paradoxes that make them struggle all their lives between one or more options available. However, the struggle deepens when one is divided by the awareness of his duty and the intensity of his desires. Most often, you will meet this type of conflict (appearance/essence; duty/desire) in the Army where one most submit to a code, to superior ranks even with the price of giving up his personal beliefs, his desires. As the recent events that took place in the US Army show, usually the clash inside the soldier is too strong and builds gradually until a break down occurs. Could pressure alone turn a clear-minded psyc! hiatrist into a cold blood killer? Maj. Nidal Malik Hasan seemed to be a regular 39 years old man that went to church, to work without raising even the smallest suspicion of having troubles. Yet, he did have and his superiors should have been aware that his Arabic origin would make it hard for him to accept the illegal interference of US in countries like Iraq or Afghanistan. His fellows at work had nothing to complain about, as he was committed to his job and he had never before shown extremist points of view. On November the 5th while queuing for the medical examinations required before his deployment, Hasan finally broke down and started the worst mass shooting in the perimeters of a military base, with a toll of 12 people dead and 30 people wounded, including himself. There is an ongoing investigation that is supposed to make light in the controversial case, in concern to the attacker’s reasons and whether in the confusion and panic created there ! were other people who opened fire as well or if the attacker h! ad partn ers or not . Thursday’s attack was not the first incident that took place at Fort Hood and there is an extensive rehabilitation program for those suffering of the post-traumatic syndrome. US Army is dealing with suicides, disorganizations, internal insurgents and the President is not even thinking to start the withdraw promised during the elections, what’s more he plans to send more troops.
