Hang it or not?
by Silvia Szarkova
If you want to hang out your laundry on clothlines to dry it on sun, you can do it- unless you want to shock your neighbours. It is called right to hang and some people need to fight for it, for example also in Pennsylvania. The other group of people do not understand why sholud everybody see the underwear of their neighbours. Is is moral to hang out your laundry to common areas of the town? Or are there more advantages of saving energy and being green? Carin Froehlich is 54-year- old lady, one of the growing group of people demanding their right to dry the laundry in the sun. But local officials asked Carin to stop this action. There is a strong oppositions against using ! clothelines, despite its energy- saving, green appeal. "They said it made the place look like trailer trash," Carin says. There is no formal law that would ban clothlines, however the fans of this natural way need to group in Project Laundry List to protect their interests. According to the group executive director Alexander Lee, people can save money and reduce carbon emissions by not turning their electric or gas dryers on. On the other hand, the non-hanging rule is an esthetic issue, says Carl Weiner, a lawyer for about 50 homeowners in suburb of Pennsylvania. They oppose the clothlines and consider the environment advantages not a such strong to measure in this topic. Florida, Utah, Maine, Hawai, Colorado and Vermont have passed a law that restricts officials in stoping residents to use clothlines. Whai is going to be the destiny of Pennsylvania?
