Wildfires are still a threat in California
by Petra Kamenicka
California is fighting with a dangerous blazes for about two weeks. And the development of this situation is not very delighting. On some places, the fire has been taken under control, but there are places, where a new wildfires are emerging and places, where current blazes are spreading and threatening inhabitants of those areas. An example of such a place is Big Sur in California. The huge wildfire in Big Sur has recently jumped the fire line and now is threatening new houses. This is the reason, why on Wednesday the evacuation of remaining residents of this community was ordered. This evacuation affected about 850 residents. The blaze in Big Sur is one of more than 1100 wildfires, that are destroying California. This natural threat has already scorched about 680 square miles and destroyed 60 buildings in Northern California. Many other buildings are threated.Another dangerous blaze, started by lighting on June 21has been noticed in the Los Padres National Park. In this area, the fire has already scorched about 81 square miles and destroyed 16 houses. Only 3% of fire were contained. This is very bad situation during the peak of tourist season. Helicopters carrying a big containers, full of water are flying around and pouring this water on charring forests. David Paulison, the head of the Federal Emergency Management Agency visited, together with Gov. Arnold Scharzenegger Big Sur, the area, that is now having a rough time. As Paulison announced: ,, This is a very dangerous fire right now because of the wind and because of how dry things are and how early in the year it is.” But, fortunately, no loss of lives is expected, if people will follow evacuation orders. In southern California, there are problems with blazes too. Area of Los Padres forest is endangered by fire, that burned about 200 acres of bush. The evacuation of 45 people was ordered. In the report of the U.S. Forest Service is mentioned, that this hot and dry weather will surely continue. A peak of fire season is traditionally in late July and August. Blazes were caused by, for this time unusually strong and intense storms. According to this report, even fiercer storms are expected in this summer. A very hot and fiery summer is foretold for Northern areas of California. Forecasts are not delighting.
