Increasing number of crane collapses?
by Barbora Misakova

A man would think that in the age when everything is made by heavy machines and special technical vehicles he will be just pushing some buttons, drinking coffee while he is safely sitting somewhere in the office. In real it is a bit different. Tell me, have you ever seen at least one building site without workers? I bet you haven't. Even though we have big machines and lot of techniques which help us to create incredible high buildings, human hand is still the most needed “tool” and the necessity of workers will still be here until the robots will work instead of us. And even machines make it easier, sometimes it seems like people depreciate human abilities and fully depend on machines. What is worse this trust in machines can lead to big tragedies. In last 3 months New York had to face two cases when construction crane just snapped and smashed. Last Friday the 200-foot crane just fell down near Manhattan's Upper East Side where is already 12 stories of luxury complex built. What is a bit weird on this whole thing is that crane fell despite inspections which were connected with similar earlier accident. Last accident caused death to 7 workers and another 2 people died on Friday. There is no surprise that people are scared. They are scared not only to go out but they are even afraid of sitting at home – just because of possibility that similar accident will happen again. And to be honest I am not surprised – in comparison with last year (when no one was killed) is number of 9 workers a real threat. I can't help myself and I have to ask – who is responsible then? When crane went through inspections and technical checking who did make a mistake? What if machine worked well? What if it was a man who overrate the whole situation? As shows also complaints of some people living in the neighborhood I would say that a workers made mistake. And that's why I think that a man must be controlled, not machines. Man is responsible for everything and he should also stand in the breach!
