Well, Americans drive the strongest cars, have the strongest position on the global market, decide about global affairs and actually, the air we are breathing is in their hands, too. This week, world` s strongest man, US president George W. Bush announced his new war, war against air pollution. In fact, US occupies the first rank among the nations emitting the heat - trapping carbon dioxide emissions, that are defined as the main cause of the greenhouse effect and global changes of cimate. And what is more, it is one of the only two nations, that rejected to ratify the Kyoto protocol. The second one is Kazakhstan. Despite the fact that the US government signed the treatment, the signature was nothing but symbolic. The reason of rejection, that Bush indicated, was the exemption given to China, the world` s second largest emitter of air pollution, and the thread on the US economy represented by the Kyoto principles. Today, the Kyoto treatment covers more than 170 countries and 60% of greenhouse gas emitters. Its main objective is to stabilize the greenhouse gas concentrations in the air at a level, that would prevent dangerous changes of climate. On the other hand the US government argues that while US is trying to reduce its on emission of greenhouse gas, there are the developing economies such as China and India, that are contaminating the air millions of American breathe. I wonder whose air is being contaminated by the US carbon dioxide emissions.. However, Bush` s new US emission plan has to face with a lot of criticism. The objective to implement more restrictive laws seem to be insufficient and late, without any vision of progress and only a poor attempt to prevent passing climate legislation , that would hurt economic growth. Just another effort of the US president with a confusing intention.

Pápež Benedikt XVI bol na jeho návšteve v Spojených štátoch amerických. Celková pápežová púť trvala 6 dní. V nedeľu mal slávnostnú omšu na zaľudnenom štadióne v Yankee.Celé jeho kázanie bolo orientované na teroristický útok na Svetové trhové stredisko. Chápal ľudí, ktorí boli hlboko poranení týmto strašným nešťastím v minulosti. Preto im dal radu, aby použili slobodu, ktorú dostali od Boha, skutočne rozumným spôsobom. Zdôrazňoval tento rozumný prístup najmä preto, aby sa pre budúce generácie vybudovala silná nádej do budúcnosti. Požiadal Boha, aby priniesol pokoj do tohto násilného sveta a aby naplnil srdcia tých, ktorí cítia nenávisť, láskou. K tomuto navyše stále zdôrazňoval myšlienku prítomnosti viery v životoch, bez ohľadu na to, kde sme.Samozrejme, citoval aj potrebu, aby sa vykonali nejaké aktivity spojené s bojom proti interupcii. Povzbudil účastníkov, aby preukázali svoju úctu ku hocikomu, bez ohľadu na to, či už je narodený alebo ešte nie. Navyše, by sme mali ochraňovať tých, ktorí to nedokážu samí, a teda tých , ktorí sú nenarodení pod srdciami matiek. Štadión bol nádherne vyzdobený bielymi a žltými vlajkami. Celý oltár bol v bielom so vzácnymi vázami. Pápežské kreslo bolo vyzdobené stužkami bielej a žltej farby. Podľa Philipa Giordiana, daňového advokáta z Greenwichu, nikdy predtým nevidel štadión tak krásne vyzdobený. Tejto pápežskej návštevy sa zúčastnilo viac ľudí ako sa očakávalo. K tomu na slávnostnej nedeľnej omši bol obrovská radostný dav ľudí, ktorí so šťastím mávali rukami pri pohľade ne pápeža Benedikta XVI. Niektorí z účastnených odchádzali veľmi pomaly z miesta, aby si mohli do poslednej chvíle vychutnať atmosféru ako sa len dalo.

25-mile path of damages on cars, houses, telephone lines, more than 200 injured residents and 1 man death. These are the effects of 3 tornadoes that ripped through Virginia on Monday and during 4 hours destroyed everything that was in their way. Tornadoes are labeled as the nature` s most violent storms, that occur without any warning sign at anytime and anyplace in the US. Every year an average number of 800 twisters travel across the US causing about 80 deaths and over 1500 injuries. Most tornadoes in Virginia indeed occur from April to October between 3pm and 9pm. Heating of air near the ground and moisture in the low level of atmosphere are the most favorable conditions for thunderstorms. The stormy spring weather can easily result in a twister by creating a rapidly-spinning funnel of clouds with destructive power.There in an average number of 7 tornadoes per year documented in Virginia. The last most fatal tornado outbreak – 29 twisters recorded, touched down in August, 1993 and caused 4 deaths and 238 injuries. It is the unique geographical features of the USA, that makes the probability of tornado breakout so high. Without any mountain chain there is no barrier to Gulf moisture coming from ocean and creating great conditions for thunderstorms. Americans have only one possibility to prevent damages and injuries, be prepared anytime and anywhere. Paying attention to the weather advisories is the first step to reduce the destructive effects of tornadoes. In case of emergency, seeking a stable and low shelter, avoiding windows and open buildings and protecting your head with hands could save your life.

Chris Cantell Discusses US News: BIG FIRE IN SIERRA MADRE, CALIFORNIA Radka Konkolova

On Monday there was a big fire in Sierra Madre, California. Crews have a lot of work to do to halt the fire. Some of burning areas have not burnt in over 40 years. The whole area which burnt was about 490 acres. People were terrifying and had to move out from their homes. It was about 1,000 people. There were ground crews which managed to blow out the fire. There was some water-dropping aircraft which helped to ground crews. Calmer wind and humidity helped extinguish the fire, too. There was more than 580 firefighters. The cause of striking the fire is unknown and the authorities try to find the reason. The blaze cut off 50 wedding guests and they had to be evacuate by helicopter Sunday afternoon. I suppose that they spend difficult moments. Temperatures rose into the mid-80s before noon Monday. All people were worried, but finally it managed to blow out. The blaze was creeping northwest into the Angeles national Forest. In Sierra Madre all schools were closed on Monday and at least 1,000 people was evacuated. No homes had burnt. It wasn't so easy to extinguish the fire. It was hot day slopes were steep. It wasn't possible to use bulldozers. The terrain was inaccessible and it was the hard work for crews. Two firefighters were treated for minor injuries. Another fact was that it was so near to the city and it complicated the situation said Sierra Madre fire information spokeswoman Barbara Croonquist. Finally it ended well and people could exhale. The operation wasn't easy, but it succeeded and the forest and homes of people were saved especially due to ground and water crews and quick interference of authorities. Now the area is save and everybody can sleep well.

Vysoká pravdepodobnosť vzniku tornád v USA je spôsobená jedinečnými geografickými vlastnosťami krajiny. Bez akéhokoľvek horského masívu neexistuje žiadna bariéra, ktorá by bránila prieniku Golfského vlhkého prúdu prichádzajúceho od oceánu a vytvýrajúceho výborné podmienky pre vznik búrok. Američania majú teda jedinú možnosť, ako zabrániť škodám na majetku a na životoch, byť pripravený vždy a všade. Prvým krokom ako zredukovať ničivé následky tornáda je sledovanie predpovede počasia. V čase núdze je to hľadanie stabilného a nízko položeného prístrešia, vyhýbanie sa oknám a otvoreným budovám a chránenie si hlavy rukami, čo môže zachrániť váš život.

Tento ekonomický podporný balíček bol vládou odsúhlasený už vo februári.Americký daňový úrad (IRS) pripravuje vklady plánované na každý deň. Pôvodne malo IRS začať program až v máji. Boli však schopné spustiť tento program a to najmä vďaka počítačovému systému, ktorý bol vynájdený, aby dokázal spracovávať platby každý deň.Daň by mala byť vrátená až 130 miliónom domácností, kde je 600 dolárov stanovených pre jednotlivcov, 1 200 dolárov pre zosobášené páry a 300 dolárov pre deti do veku 17 rokov. Vrátená čiastka z dane bude vložení na účty nasledovne:- tie skupiny, ktoré majú bezpečnostné číslo od 00 do 20, dostanú peniaze do tohto piatku- skupinám očíslovaným od 21 do 75 budú priznané peniaze do 9. mája- zvyšným skupinám (od 76 do 99) dostanú ich depozitá do 16. májaIRS odhaduje, že iba jedna tretina dostane svoje depozitá priamo, zvyšok im bude doručený cez papierové šeky. Predseda pre IRS Doug Shulman v pondelok povedal, že sú si vedomí, že sú tu stále takí jedinci, ktorí sú oprávnení získať peniaze z tohto ekonomického balíčka, no bohužiaľ nepodali daňové priznanie. Shulman podporil tých, ktorí nie sú zvyknutí podávať daňové priznanie, aby si overili, či nie sú aj oni oprávnení podľa nových stanovených podmienok. Ešte stále môžu podať priznanie, ak vyplnia formulár typu 1040A.

V pondelok horel v Sierra Madre, Kalifornia obrovský oheň. Pracovné skupiny mali veľa práce, aby zastavili oheň. Niektoré z horiacich oblastí nehoreli viac ako 40 rokov. Celá oblasť, ktorá horela mala asi okolo 490 akrov. Ľudia boli zhrození a museli sa vysťahovať zo svojich domovov. Bolo to asi 1000 ľudí. Boli tu pozemné pracovné skupiny, ktorým sa podarilo zahasiť oheň. Bolo tu lietadlo, ktoré rozprašovalo vodu, ktoré pomáhalo pozemným pracovným skupinám. Aj pokojnejší oheň a vlhkosť pomohli zahasiť oheň. Bolo tu viacej ako 580 bojovníkov s ohňom. Príčina vypuknutia požiaru je neznáma a úrady sa snažia nájsť príčinu. Požiar odrezal 50 svadobných hosťov a museli byť evakuovaní helikoptérou v nedeľu popoludní. Domnievam sa, že zažívali ťažké chvíle. Teploty vzrástli na 80 stupňové predpoludním v pondelok. Všetci ľudia sa obávali, ale nakoniec sa oheň podaril zahasiť. Požiar sa rozširoval severozápadne do Los Angelského národného lesa. V Sierra Madre všetky školy boli v pondelok zatvorené a prinajmenšom 1,000 ľudí evakuovaných. Žiadne domy nezhoreli. Nebolo to ľahké zahasiť požiar. Bol horúci deň a kopce boli strmé. Nebolo možné použiť buldozéry. Terén bol neprístupný a bola to ťažká práca pre pracovné skupiny. Dvaja bojovníci s ohňom boli ošetrení kvôli menším zraneniam. Ďalšia skutočnosť bola, že to bolo veľmi blízko mesta a to skomplikovalo situáciu, povedala hovorkyňa informácií o požiari v Sierra Madre. Barbara Croonquist. Nakoniec to skončilo dobre a ľudia si mohli vydýchnuť. Operácia nebolaľahká, ale uspela a les a domovy ľudí boli zachránené obzvlášť vďaka pozemným a vzdušným pracovným skupinám a rýchlemu zásahu úradov. Teraz je oblasť bezpečná a každý môže pokojne spať.

The Federal Reserve system is going to make another change in interest rate. As we all know, the Federal Reserve system, also called just the Federal Reserve or the Fed, is the central banking system of the United States. Between the main purposes of the Fed belong for example furnishing an elastic currency, establishing a more effective supervision of banking in the United States and many others. The primary motivation for drawing up the Federal Reserve was to address banking panics. Currently, Ben Bernanke serves as the Chairman of the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserved System. In these days, he together with his colleges are taking part in meeting, where they want to decide, how the interest rate will look like in the next days. They are considering about little cut in interest rate, which could impact as a fresh pulse on the economy. An expected interest rate should decrease by one-quarter percentage and finally set on a value of 2 percent at the end of a session Federal Reserve System representatives. At the fist sight, it could seem, that final decision and value of interest rate will mean no changes to us, ordinary people, but on the other hand, investors are holding their breath for the Fed at the moment and hope, that the direction of Fed policy stays in balance. Medzi jeho hlavné cieľe patrí napríklad zabezpečenie elastickej meny, upevnenie efektívnejšieho bankovníctva v Spojených Štátoch a mnoho iných. Primárna motivácia pre vytvorenie Federálneho Rezervného systému bolo ujať sa bankovej paniky. V súčasnosti je na čele rady Fed-u Ben Bernanke. V týchto dňoch, sa práve on spolu so svojimi kolegami zúčastňujú stretnutia, kde sa plánujú dohodnúť na tom, ako bude úroková miera vyzerať v ďalších dňoch. Uvažujú o miernom znížení úrokovej miery, ktoré by na ekonimku mohlo zapôsobiť ako osviežujúci impulz. There were so many various catastrophes this month, one couldn't account. And yesterday another disaster happened. One of the natural elements attacked again. Now it was a huge and strong wind. Yesterday meant a big surprise, shock and fear as well for secure residents of inland countries of the United States. The air started to swirl and some tornadoes were setting.
Tornadoes touched down in areas near farm towns in the North of Colorado and South of Wyoming. Some of these towns were hurt very badly. The most stricken is probably Windsor, about 16,000 farm town. But also other towns approximately 50 miles north of Denver, as Platteville, Johnstown or Loveland were hit too. Even town in Wyoming as Laramie and Cheyenne.
It had to be horrible for those people because almost the whole property of theirs, especially shelters, is gone. According to reports there were flowing roofs and parts of houses also crumpling farm equipment and power lines were downing, so about 60,000 people remained without electricity. The whole Interstate 25 was closed for few hours after the storm and some parts of state Highway 85 were stopped for a while.
People could see the huge dark gray funnel approximately quarter-mile wide accompanied with heavy rain and hail. Many people are thanks that injured but it is not known how many of them are hurt and how seriously. It is still in the state of detection. But the medical personnel has said, that they had got all types of injuries caused by flowing objects, splinters, debris, falling trees, or broken glass. Anyway, although it seems very bad, according to my opinion it could be more worse, but maybe I am false. I think no as many people lost their shelters but certainly there are some of them, who lost everything, or almost everything. Even at least one person was killed, but Weld County Sheriff refused to say how was he killed.
Also the northeast of Colorado was warned about the tornado, but the were no reports about it from this area, fortunately. But there were some reports from Laramie, Wyoming,where two schools and Wal-Mart were probably damaged by the storm. Also Interstate 80 between Laramie and Cheyenne was closed for some time because of turned over vehicles on it. So people have besides sorrows another work with getting away rubbles, over turned cars and other waste...

Tento mesiac sa stalo toľko katastrof, že by ich človek ani nevedel všetky zrátať. No a včera sa k tomu pridalo ďalšie nešťastie. Znova zaútočil jeden zo živlov. A tentokrát to bol obrovský a silný vietor. Včerajšok pre nič netušiacich obyvateľov vnútrozemských štátov USA znamenal veľké prekvapenie, šok a tiež strach. Vzduch sa začal víriť a sformovalo sa niekoľko tornád.
Tornáda udreli v oblastiach v blízkosti farmárskych miest na severe Colorada a na juhu Wyomingu. Niektoré z týchto miest boli veľmi vážne zasiahnuté. Najviac postihnutým mestom je pravdepodobne Windsor asi 16 000-ové farmárske mestečko. Ale tiež ďalšie mestá vo vzdialenosti okolo 50 míľ od mesta Denver, ako Platteville, Johnstown alebo Loveland, boli tiež zasiahnuté. Dokonca aj mestá Laramie a Cheyenne vo Wyomingu.
Pre ľudí to muselo byť niečo strašné, pretože prišli takmer o celý majetok, hlavne o strechu nad hlavou. Podľa správ tade lietali strechy a časti domov, tiež zničené farmárske náradie a elektrické vedenie bolo porušené, takže okolo 60 000 ľudí ostalo bez elektrickej energie. Celá medzištátna diaľnica Interstate 25 bola po búrke na niekoľko hodín uzavretá a aj niektoré úseky diaľnice 85boli na chvíľu odstavené.
Ľudia mohli vidieť obrovský sivý lievik široký približne 400 m sprevádzaný hustým dažďom a krupobitím. Veľa ľudí bolo vďaka tomuto zranených a zatiaľ nie je známy ani ich počet ani ako vážne boli zranení. To je stále v štádiu zisťovania. Ošetrovací personál tvrdí, že majú všetky druhy zranení spôsobené lietajúcimi objektmi, trieskami a rôznymi úlomkami, padajúcimi stromami alebo rozbitým sklom. V každom prípade, napriek tomu, že to vyzerá hrozivo, podľa mňa to mohlo byť aj omnoho horšie, ale možno sa mýlim. Myslím, že nie je tam až toľko ľudí, čo stratili strechu nad hlavou, ale určite sa nájdu aj takí, ktorým neostalo vôbec alebo skoro vôbec nič. Dokonca najmenej jedna osoba bola zabitá, ale šerif Weld County osmietol povedať, ako sa to stalo.
Tiež severovýchodná časť Colorada bola oboznámená s hrozbou tornáda, ale našťastie v tejto oblasti neboli zaznamenané nijaké prípady. Zato prišli podobné správy z mesta Laramie vo Wyomingu, kde búrka pravdepodobne zničila dve školy a Wal-Mart. Tiež medzinárodná cesta číslo 80 medzi týmito dvoma mestami bola na nejaký čas uzavretá z dôvodu niekoľkých prevrátených áut. Takže ľudia teraz majú okrem starostí ďalšiu prácu s odstraňovaním trosiek, prevrátených áut a ďalšieho odpadu...

Pápež Benedikt XVI bol na jeho návšteve v Spojených štátoch amerických. Celková pápežová púť trvala 6 dní. V nedeľu mal slávnostnú omšu na zaľudnenom štadióne v Yankee.Celé jeho kázanie bolo orientované na teroristický útok na Svetové trhové stredisko. Chápal ľudí, ktorí boli hlboko poranení týmto strašným nešťastím v minulosti. Preto im dal radu, aby použili slobodu, ktorú dostali od Boha, skutočne rozumným spôsobom. Zdôrazňoval tento rozumný prístup najmä preto, aby sa pre budúce generácie vybudovala silná nádej do budúcnosti. Požiadal Boha, aby priniesol pokoj do tohto násilného sveta a aby naplnil srdcia tých, ktorí cítia nenávisť, láskou. K tomuto navyše stále zdôrazňoval myšlienku prítomnosti viery v životoch, bez ohľadu na to, kde sme.Samozrejme, citoval aj potrebu, aby sa vykonali nejaké aktivity spojené s bojom proti interupcii. Povzbudil účastníkov, aby preukázali svoju úctu ku hocikomu, bez ohľadu na to, či už je narodený alebo ešte nie. Navyše, by sme mali ochraňovať tých, ktorí to nedokážu samí, a teda tých , ktorí sú nenarodení pod srdciami matiek. Štadión bol nádherne vyzdobený bielymi a žltými vlajkami. Celý oltár bol v bielom so vzácnymi vázami. Pápežské kreslo bolo vyzdobené stužkami bielej a žltej farby. Podľa Philipa Giordiana, daňového advokáta z Greenwichu, nikdy predtým nevidel štadión tak krásne vyzdobený. Tejto pápežskej návštevy sa zúčastnilo viac ľudí ako sa očakávalo. K tomu na slávnostnej nedeľnej omši bol obrovská radostný dav ľudí, ktorí so šťastím mávali rukami pri pohľade ne pápeža Benedikta XVI. Niektorí z účastnených odchádzali veľmi pomaly z miesta, aby si mohli do poslednej chvíle vychutnať atmosféru ako sa len dalo.

Erin hits Texas, while Dean is closing in on Caribbean islands Corina Ciubotaru

It's been a very strange year for Texas. It rained like crazy all summer, ending the state's ten-year drought and now Erin is about to hit. Yet another girl-named weather phenomenon formed in the Atlantic on Tuesday and became a tropical storm on Wednesday after it reached the required sustained speed of 40 mph. It hit Copano Bay first then it reached Houston and calmed down a bit, bringing winds of 35 mph and rain that stopped traffic in the middle of the city. It had been too close to land to become a hurricane, luckily. Floods are expected all across Texas, especially in the Hill Country and the Corpus Christi area, which have so far received almost twice the rainfall they're used to. Other hurricanes are on their way, too. Dean became a genuine hurricane out in the Atlantic, with wind speeds of 90 mph and now threatens the Caribbean islands. Because of it, tropical storm warnings have been issued for the following islands: Dominica and St Lucia, Antigua, Barbados, Barbuda, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Monserrat, Nevis, St. Kitts and St. Maarten. A tropical storm warning means the storm is expected to hit in the next 24 hours. Tropical storm watches mean the storm is coming in 36 hours and they have been issued for Martinique, Guadeloupe and Grenada. Flossie swept through Hawaii, but with less force than expected. The hurricane season will go on until November 30th and may result in as many as 16 tropical storms.

Erin hit Texas, now the Caribbean expect Dean Corina Ciubotaru

The storm couple, Erin and Dean, is going about its business in North America and the Caribbean islands, respectively. Erin hit the coast of Texas yesterday morning, northeast of Corpus Christi, and has lost some strength along the way, being downgraded to a tropical depression. Many towns and camping resorts in Texas haven't even issued evacuation orders, leaving people to decide for themselves, while in Houston one person was killed and another injured after a storage unit collapsed. Dean is still in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean and is heading for the Lesser Antilles, where it is supposedly going to hit on Friday. Barbados is expecting it within 24 hours, while for the islands of Montserrat, Nevis, St Kitts, St Maarten and St Vincent, a tropical storm watch was issued, meaning the hurricane is due in 36 hours. Residents on these islands might be in luck as the last Dean to hit, in 1989, passed over Sable Island, Nova Scotia and Newfoundland and caused no damage or deaths, even though it reached maximum wind speeds of 169 kilometers per hour. But chances are this year's hurricane may not be as gentle, as it is expected to become a Category 3 hurricane by Saturday and may bring around ten inches of rain in some mountainous areas. The hurricane season in the Atlantic is just beginning and will last until November 30th. It is expected to sweep the U.S. and the Atlantic islands with nine potential hurricanes, of which three to five may become major.

In fact people from Texas are experiencing an ants’ infestation creepier than anything you have seen before. Somehow it does seem awfully familiar, but I guess is just the scenes from movies. If Texas was famous for the fire ants that stinted really bad during the summer, now it will sadly have to give up that reputation and get a new one due to the "crazy rasberry ants" that are eating the fire ones. For the Texans things did not improve, but got worse as the crazy ants (they move erratically) bite too, they multiply very fast and are somewhat immune to ant killers, not to mention that they spread like the air and already have been spotted in five counties from the Houston-area. Scientists are underlining that this new specie that got in Houston through a cargo shipment are harming the crops and poses risks to an endangered type of grouse called the Attwater prairie chicken. They added that for undiscovered reason the attraction for electrical equipments that is characteristic to other species of ants too, has persisted, ruining gas meters, pumps and others. Hopefully NASA's Johnson Space Center and Hobby Airport where the ants were spotted won’t be affected. Moreover, these ants have developed certain immunity, have multiple queens and aren’t biting the traps. In spite of experts’ requests, the Environmental Protection Agency has not approved more powerful pesticides. It does stir panic inside me just thinking of them, of their annoying speed and disgusting body. Don’t know what you would do, but I would go bunkers seeing them. Good luck in the search for a solution.

The tragedy of World Trade Center from 11th September of 2001 afflicted the hearts of people from all nations throughout the world. It was the biggest terroristic attack in the history of United States, which craved a lot of victims.Shortly after this, Governor of New York George Pataki wrote a letter to Secretary of the Navy Gordon England. This letter contained a request that the Navy would name the USS New York on a warship involved in the War on Terror, and all of this in honor of September 11's victims. This request was, of course approved, and during this weekend the ship was also christened.On Saturday the USS New York, ship built with the scrap steel from the ruins of WTC, was christened in Avondale. This event did not forwent thousands of people, among which did not absent families, friends and acquaintances of people died in this terrorist attack. Christening was overshooting very well. "May God bless this ship and all who sail on her," said Dotty England, the sponsor of the ship, when smashing a bottle of champagne against it.This huge ship should serve as a source of strength and inspiration for the nation. "We are sending the message, that we are standing strong," said Lee Ielpi, president of the September 11th Families' Association.The ship contains 7.5 tons of steel from the site, is 684 feet long, 105 feet wide and the total weight is 25,000 ton. The vessel is designed to deliver a fully-equipped battalion of 700 Marines and 360 sailors.

John Redding, regional spokesman for the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation in Boise said they are reconsidering dam construction which involves to tame rivers by dividing them, to prevent water from flowing in certain areas, to produce cheap hydroelectric power and can also involve environmental problems like soil erosion, species extinction, sprea of diseases. The dam construction era ended in 1966 once the dam of Glen Canyon was finished, but the growing of population, the fears about the climate change makes the governments rethink it. Statistics show the population of the Western states grew about 20 percent in the 1990s and continues its growth despite the fact that water supply is endangered by climate changes. The dams seem the solution to this growth and its implications, but are they really? How can they be when all over the country they are removing dams because of environmental concerns that promote a better quality of water, a better environment for fish. For example in Oregon four dams on the Klamath River will be destroyed in order to restore the salmon population and when Edwards dam was removed many dead salmons were released. Jay Manning, director of the Washington state Department of Ecology, said that although dams are not a very possible matter to take into account, they may well be a necessary harm as the only solution to the poor water supply. Furthermore, the demand for water is already high and there is also the pressure of climate changes that instead of snow in winter there will be rain, thus the slow-melting calotte that provides water in the summer months will not be formed anymore. On the other hand there are other options like conservation, storing water in natural underground aquifers, exploiting water from the mountains, desalination plants to make water from the ocean to be good to drink and even small dams for local use only. Washington's Democratic Governor Christine Gregoire already assembled a coalition of business, government and environmental groups and came up with the Columbia Basin River Water Management Plan. They will spend nearly $200 million to find ecologycal solutions for arid eastern Washington by approaching subjects like air quality, environmental assessement, nuclear waste, shorelands, etc. It is for no one surprise that many environmentalists sustained her plan. Dr. John Osborn, a Spokane physician and chairman of the Sierra Club chapter in Spokane considers dams as beneficial for business, but they overlap costs and environmental destruction and also they ignore possible solutions that would led to the improvement of the conservation. Nevertheless, the new dams cost more money then the government can actually afford and it's uncertain if dams will be the solution taken into account, only the Black Rock dam proposal in the Yakima River basin concludes estimates a cost of $6.7 billion to build and the profit would be of 16 cents/dollar spent. Taking a peep in the past more than 472 dams were built in California, Oregon-Washington state line, Montana (Aswan High Dam, Edwards Dam, Folsom Dam, Grand Coulee Dam, Hoover Dam, Itaipu Dam, South Fork Dam, Three Gorges Dam) and so on and so forth. Their decision will be taken in the benefit of the population, because they are in the same boat, so don't worry very much. Just wait and see.

Fire at the root of Los Angeles mountains by Lenka Filipova

The foothills of the Los Angeles brushes were in flames on Sunday. The blaze forced more than 1,000 people living in the surroundings to move away. It was quite serious disaster when to reckon that there is only the beginning the wildfire season.The fire was for the first time recorded on the Saturday afternoon in the woods only few miles northeast of Pasadena. At that time, the weather was rather untypical because the temperature reached surprisingly 100 degrees and the wind was quite blowing. Consequently, the blaze was difficult to take over. Hence, it augmented to inhabited areas. The first evacuation came at 11 in the evening. The fire took over more than 350 acres, thus requiring a fine number of firemen to extinguish it. There were 450 firefighters, supported by 2 helicopters and water-dropping air tankers. According to the reports by Elisa Weaver, the spokeswoman for the Arcadia Fire Department, they managed to evacuate without any damage approximately 550 dwellings on Saturday night and on Sunday. In addition to this, she expressed her worries about the blaze in that area, as there had not been the fire for over 40 years. That is why, everyone was really shocked and stunned by the burning foothills. The fire extended to the outskirts of Sierra Madre and continued furthermore feeding on easily flammable brushes. The firefighters expect it to linger for another two or three days as the winds are getting calm in these days. Till this time no serious injuries or damages were reported.
