Quarrel about the nuclear energy
by Martina Harvanova
The quarrels about whether to build new nuclear power stations or not are a world-wide issue. The UK has recently said "yes" to the idea. Long-lasting questions about its pros and cons were solved, as the final decision apparently prefers advantages of nuclear energy. The whole "build-nuclear-plants" thing began to be discussed years ago among others also on the level of politics. The British Conservatives saw the nuclear power as a "last resort", on the other hand, the Liberal Democrats brought an accusation against them saying they "surrendered to the nuclear lobby". No matter what opinion they preferred, one thing is sure. The recent decree admitted its pluses. Most of the for-voices claim it is safe and secure, plus Britain won't rely on imports in the future. Nuclear power stations will contribute to decrease of carbon emissions which are deemed as one of the most harmful factors to Earth's atmosphere. Still, there are wind power stations, but, unfortunately, these aren't able to provide us with sufficient amount of energy. As some experts' remarks say, "a mix of energy is essential and we should not be over dependent on one source." However, the main reason for decision to dispose of more nuclear energy was meeting Britain's energy policy goals. The target is to reduce carbon emissions by 60% by 2050.The major opponent of the idea is probably Greenpeace movement. Their clauses recline in the opinion that nuclear power is irrelevant, because it only produces electricity, cut carbon emissions only in four per cent and therefore won't stop the climate change. Greenpeace stresses renewable sources f energy, such as wind, wave or tidal energy. Although it is hard to agree fully with either the first or the second view, the important thing is that the majority of public and world authorities conceives the pollution and is ready to improve the current environmental situation.
