Are the United States on the brink of war against Iran?
by Corina Ciubotaru
A new war is about to be started by the Bush administration, and the target is now Iran. Rich in oil, neighbor to Iraq and with a population of over 68 million, Iran is now being made to look like a major threat for world peace because it would not give up its nuclear program. In the eyes of the Bush administration, Iran is secretly developing nuclear weapons; Iranian officials always claimed the program is only for peaceful purposes and President Ahmadinejad raised the question of why should Americans be allowed to have nuclear programs while they forbid them to the rest of the world. Even though international voices and even American people strongly oppose a war against Iran, White House officials aren't known for solving political situations by peaceful talks. So they began imposing economic sanctions that affected three Iranian banks, Bank Melli, Bank Mellat and Bank Saderat, in an effort to pressure the country into accepting economic benefits that would derive from officially abandoning the nuclear program. This action might have effects in European countries that do business with Iran, as well as on the global oil market, as oil prices went above $90 per barrel after the new sanctions were enforced. But, as was the case for a long time with Iraq, the Bush administration has yet to produce evidence of their allegations regarding Iran's nuclear weapons programs. And with presidential elections approaching fast, let's just hope we won't see any hasty attacks on a country much more powerful than Iraq, actions that the entire world might end up regretting.
