Chris Cantell Discusses US News: Medal of Honor to a young Marine
by Maria Vasilova
Since president Lincoln, the Medal of Honor is the highest award given for valor to those who lost their lives during a military action beyond the call of duty. One of those, who were awarded posthumously, is Marine Cpl. Jason Dunham. April 2004. He and his fellow soldiers were patrolling near the Syrian border in Iraqi. They stopped a convoy of cars. As medias announced later, the convoy was returning from an attack on Marine convoy.A man attacked Dunham unexpectedly and during the fight he dropped a grenade. Dunham, in order to save the lives of his fellow Marines, used his body as a shield to protect them from being injured. As he tried to lower the force of the bomb using his helmet, the explosion wounded him seriously. Unfortunately, he died eight days later in Bethesda Naval Hospital in Maryland. November 2006. President Bush announced that the Medal of Honor would be awarded posthumously to Dunham. "As long as we have Marines like Corporal Dunham, America will never fear for her liberty," said Bush. Cpl. Jason A. Sanders says that Dunham knew what he was doing, he wanted to save lives of other Marines."All he wanted was to make sure his boys made it back home," said for CNN Cpl. Mark E. Dean.In his age of 23 years, he is the second American in Iraq to receive the Medal of Honor. Sgt. Paul Ray Smith, the only U. S. soldier in the battle in April 2003 near Baghdad International Airport, received the Medal of Honor for killing 50 enemies while helping his wounded comrades. Although the Medal of Honor is the highest award for human's bravery, the sad thing about it is the fact, that either you "have to" die in military action, or you "should" kill people to save lives of your people. My question is, what is the purpose of the war, who are these people dying for?
