Too much snow
by Claudia Sonea

Less than a week after an ice storm blamed for at least 38 deaths, mostly in traffic accidents, in the middle of the country, another winter storm hits the Northeast of US, affecting roads across the Great Lakes states and into New England. According to the National Weather Service, Michigan and Indiana all the way to Maine are in danger of winter storms; furthermore, because on parts of the Chicago area and Ann Arbor, Michigan, a foot of snow had fallen, the weather forecast showed that 18 inches were possible in northern New England and that there was a chance of 14 inches in parts of Michigan. The winter storm is already blamed for three deaths cut visibility and iced over highways with a wind-blown brew of snow and that is why Maine State Police Sgt. Andrew Donovan advised people to stay indoors, at least until it calms down a little bit and the visibility of less than 200 yards gets bigger. Every available plow truck has been sent at work in Vermont (10 inches) said Reggie Brown, highway department dispatcher in Montpelier. On Sunday, Illinois Department of Transportation spokesman Mike Claffey revealed that 1,000 trucks were out clearing snow. Everything was affected by the storm: hundreds of flights at airports in Chicago were canceled at airports in the Northeast, including in Portland, Maine; Buffalo, N.Y. and Manchester, N.H. (airports in Philadelphia, Boston and New York were less harmed); churches called off Sunday services, etc. Still, the New England Patriots vs. New York Jets game at Foxborough, Mass., was still attended by many fans that had to shovel the snow off their seats. Also, in Buffalo, Bills fans that rose early for a bus trip to Cleveland for a game against the Browns went on despite the hazardous driving conditions. Unstoppable were the Christmas shoppers too. The Pennsylvania Public Utility Commission reported 160,000 of their customers were left in darkness by the storm on Sunday. Duane Nichols, deputy director of the State Emergency Management Agency, confessed that the 14,900 Missouri homes and business remained without power Sunday morning represents a decrease from about 165,000 on Tuesday. It could be the end of the nightmare, but who knows. The winter is called and it is still at the beginning. Stay indoors and stock up, because you're going to need it.

Christmas movies
by Claudia Sonea

This holiday season the traditionalists are going to enjoy some of the good old movies with thematic like: Christmas carol, Black Christmas, All I want for Christmas, Every day except Christmas, Heidi, Guess who's coming for Christmas?, Home for Christmas, The Home alone series, etc. But the most memorable movie for Christmas that TV programs all over the world broadcast it for this special holiday is It's a Wonderful Life featuring Jimmy Hendrix. On the other hand, the new generation is going to settle for something a little bit more different, bloodier. Slate, daily magazine on the Web founded in 1996, has prepared a list for the non-conventional type of viewers with movies that fall into two categories: Christmas movies that never quite made it into the canon, and films that aren't Christmas movies, but are set during the holiday and evoke it every bit as well as the old standbys. On this list there are included movies like Die Hard featuring Bruce Willis that is related to Christmas only by the fact that the entire action between the good character and the villains takes place on Christmas Eve. Another film related to the holiday that never had the chance to see the big screen, is Yogi's First Christmas doesn't deserve the obscure fate of Hong Kong Phooey. The list continues with Douglas Sirk's romantic melodrama All That Heaven Allows (1954) with the saddest Christmas scene in cinema history; The Ice Harvest with John Cusack; The thin man with William Powell; Silent Night, Deadly Night 3: Better Watch out! that presents a bad Santa Claus and so on and so forth. Now that you have from where to take your pick, stop wasting time; book the tickets before they run out. Enjoy with your loved ones a white and beautiful Christmas at a cinema and at a hot chocolate cup, because it is no better time to spend time with them. Merry Christmas!

Crazy winter
by Katarina Nemcokova

The winter has already arrived. This sentence meant, in the past years, beautiful white snowflakes falling from the sky, frozen lakes full of ice skating people and a lot of winter fun. But as the global threats get more serious, the seasons start to go crazy. The summer time was incredibly hot and now the winter changes the land into the north pole. Someone could say: "It can't be that bad?!", but the Americans know better. The United States of America have been surprised by a sudden snow storm this week. Especially the central states like Oklahoma or Kansas were struck very heavily. It let almost 500 000 homes and businesses without power when it took down power lines, trees and made the road impassable. Therefore many emergency shelters of the Red Cross have already been filled with people who couldn't stand the lack of power. In other states the problems have not been that bad, but still a big part of schools canceled their classes and the snow caused a lot of traffic jams. But the worst is not over. The weather specialists forecast another cold blast for Friday. One hit after another. The recovery time was not enough to overcome the difficulties from the first storm and here comes the other. As a consequence the region is preparing them selfs, since they don't want the situation to get completely out of their hands. "We get crews out around three in the morning to examine the roads and the bus routes and determine whether or not they are safe," says Clarence Stukes of Arlington County School. "As soon as the first flake comes down, we have the salt trucks going out," said VDOT spokesman Mike Salmon. It looks like the situation will get under control with all these preparations made, and we can only hope that the weather is going to unbend and won't destroy the rest of what's left, so that the people can return to their home and live their normal life.

Sialena zima
by Katarina Nemcokova

Zima uz prisla. V minulych rokoch tato veta znamenala krasne snehove vlocky padajuce z oblohy, zamrznute jazera plne korculiarov a vela zimnej zabavy. No so zvacsujucimi sa globalnymi hrozbami, zacinaju rocne obdobia saliet. Neuveritelne horuce leto a teraz zima, ktora premiena krajinu na severny pol. Niekto by mohol tvrdit: "Ved to nie je take hrozne?!", ale Americania vedia svoje. Spojene staty americke prekvapila tento tyzden nahla snehova burka. Hlavne centralne staty ako Oklahoma a Kansas dostali poriadne zabrat. Burka nechala 500 000 domacnosti a podnikov bez prudu, ked zrutila elektricke stlpy, stromy a znepriechodnila cesty. Prave preto mnozstvo centier prvej pomoci bolo preplnenych ludmi ktori uz nemohli vydzrat vypadok elektriny.

After the Christmas Tree in fire, mall reopens
by Zuzana Hanzelova

Reopening was scheduled for Thursday morning for The Evergreen Plaza Shopping Center, after a fire that destroyed its 35-foot Christmas tree, gifts underneath it, and all decoration in surrounding one hour before the mall's opening Wednesday morning. "The flames broke out near the tree in a Santa's Village area about an hour before the 120-store mall's scheduled 10 a.m. opening," said Ron Kleinhaus, Evergreen Park Fire Chief. "Then firefighters arrived at the center area of the mall at 9500 S.Western Ave., thick smoke was pouring from the mall's doors, and flames were quickly moving up the tree and spreading to the ceiling," the chief continued. The fire destroyed an area, where Christmas present packaging, plastic reindeer, small plastic bushes and shrubs were. "All the stuff related to being around a big Christmas tree is gone," Kleinhaus said. "Because of the combustible material in the decorations & plastic and cardboard & that creates that thick, black, acrid smoke that just spreads like crazy." Fortunately, no one was hurt. Only a few mall walkers had to be evacuated along with some early-morning employees. Two people were treated for minor smoke inhalation, but were not taken to hospital. The main cause of this fire still remains under official investigation by both the Fire department and an insurance company. One of the oldest enclosed shopping centers in the Chicago area remained closed for the rest of the day, except for its two retailers: "Carson Pirie Scott and Office Depot, both of them have separate outside entrances. Also, an Applebee's restaurant in the parking lot was allowed to stay open," said Norma Jean Martinez, the mall's management office receptionist. She also added, that the management was waiting to hear about reopening the mall for Thursday from fire inspectors. "We're definitely still going to have Santa and not let anything ruin the holidays," she said, but added that they will not bring in another giant tree. "But the Christmas music will still be going on, and all the stores will still be decorated." Although the stores have some smoke damage, Kleinhaus said: "We're just starting to see how bad the damage was," Kleinhaus said.

Winter storm
by Claudia Sonea

Who would have thought that in the middle of winter there will be a storm that will lead to the panic and torment of thousands of people. A massive storm dropped sleet and freezing rain across much of Kansas, Missouri, Illinois and Iowa causing many deaths due to glistening, ice-covered roads and downed power lines that not only have lead to dozens of fires in Oklahoma, but also represents a problem when it comes to warming because officials cautioned that electricity may not be restored for days, if not weeks. A million utility customers were struggling without electricity in the nation's midsection after the unexpected storm. On Tuesday in Oklahoma nearly 600,000 homes and businesses remained without electricity and it was registered as the worst power outage that the state has ever gone through. Besides there were registered problems even with the traveling and 560 flights were canceled at Chicago's O'Hare Airport, while hundreds of other flights were badly delayed. Education was also affected and in Oklahoma schools were closed for a second day with canceled classes in Kansas, Iowa and Wisconsin, including the Milwaukee district, with 85,000 students. There were declared state of emergencies in Missouri, Kansas and Oklahoma the state that suffered enough damage to determine President Bush to declare a federal emergency and order government aid to supplement state and local efforts. The official figures show 23 deaths in the Midwest, 15 in Oklahoma because of cars skidding off highways, trees and power lines snapping under the weight of ice, and all other incident created by the frozen conditions. More than 100 fires reported in Tulsa and Oklahoma since the storm began and the volunteer fire department in the small Kansas town of Durham had to solve for the first time a major situation like the one that took place. Furthermore, The Federal Emergency Management Agency sent 50 industrial generators to Oklahoma for hospitals, water-treatment plants and emergency shelters, and later on another 50. Like always FEMA provided blankets, cots and pre-packaged meals. The good news is that the cold air that caused the freezing drizzle in Oklahoma moved forward, according to The National Weather Service in Norman. However, Kansas, Missouri and Iowa were the next ones on its list. Weather is revenging badly upon people and the most advanced technology can face its wrath. Take care and dress yourself warm enough to stand the cold that is forecasted.

Infinite splendid Broadway
by Ludmila Martinicka

It is 13 days from the end of the strike on the Broadway. During the strike 27 of Broadway theaters put the curtain down. In three weeks you could find Strike-free zone on the website. Not all the shows were available. The whole strike took almost three weeks. Due to dispute between League of the American Theaters and Producers, Inc. and the union representing the theater, many shows were canceled and also first night shows were moved to later dates, like "August: Osage County", "The Seafarer" and "The Little Mermaid". The strike ended on November 28th and theaters were opened for visitors just the day after. Broadway stagehands approved a new contract with producer on November 8th. Bruce Cohen, a spokesman for Local 1 of the International Alliance of Theatrical Stage Employees said it was an overhelming ratification. Charlotte St. Martin, executive director of the League of American Theatres and Producers, is very happy for the contract. New season promises to bring even better artistic impression for visitors and invites also you to come with words & come and see a show this season. Season of thanksgiving holiday and Christmas time is the best for the theaters. The strike have brought many losses on side of the theaters as well as on the side of "all-around-businesses". Fast food, souvenirs sellers,... Better time is coming back to Broadway! Be there too!

Ice storm hit the Oklahoma
by Ivana Bruderova

This Monday, residents of American state Oklahoma proved again how small man could feel when standing against something such a terrifying as weather can be. With our latest technologies we are able to prophet weather changes to hours, but sometimes it's still not enough. The terrible ice and winter storm hit the Oklahoma and in spite of warnings for parts of Missouri, Kansas, Iowa, Illinois, Nebraska and Oklahoma, from National Weather Service posted several days before, the storm caused only in Missouri and Oklahoma 15 deaths, with 13 of them on the slick highways. The sound of branches cracking under weight of ice were echoed everywhere. More than 100,000 households were blackout and had no power because power lines was snapping under layer of ice thick much than one inch. "It looks like a war zone."said Ed Betinger, spokesman for Public Service Company. Many schools in Oklahoma were closed and hospitals were dependent on a backup power generators. The Federal Emergency Management Agency and Army Corps of Engineers sent generators and bottled water from Texas to the most destroyed areas. Greyhound bus passengers were made to stay overnight in church in Tulsa with some local residents who has no heat. Many flights had to be canceled because airports in Oklahoma were closed or with no power for more than 10 hours. It can take a week or more until a power will be completely restore for everyone. The icy weather moved to the Northeast, schools in New York were closed or started late because of icy roads. The slick roads caused accidents, and in bad situation were especially homeless. In Oklahoma many of them died of hypothermia.

The 1000th diamond of '07
by Ivana Bruderova

Visitors form all sides of America and the whole world came to the only one place on the planet where you can legally find a diamond and take it out. At this place named Crater of Diamonds Sate Park in Murfreesboro, Ark. many visitors every year experience one of the most beautiful and surprising finds of their lives. Denis Tyrell, 48 was walking across the hole where he was searching for gems in the park, when suddenly he saw something sparkle in the soil. It was 3.48-carat diamond and it's the biggest one he has ever found, and at the same time the 1,000 one found in the park this year. In comparison, in 2006 had been found "only" 488 diamonds. Denis Tyrell says he found 131 diamonds in his digs, which he started in March. He said,he has been living in a tent at a local rock shop for the last 9 months and working as a handyman. "I come as often as I possibly can out here depending on the weather and other things that I have to do back at a camp" he said. The 1,000th diamond has light brown color, a rectangular shape and about the size of Chicklets chewing gum, as Denis said. "A beautiful gem like that...very clear. When the diamond shows up, it's beautiful. It's an amazing thing to know, this little spot produces diamonds. I love it a lot," continuous Denis. He heard about someone who wants to buy his diamond but the laws of Crater of Diamonds State Park ban it. It's allowed to take it out but not to handle. The largest diamond ever found in park named "Uncle Sam" had 40,23 carat and was found in 1924. Most of diamonds from this park are white, rarely yellow, brown or canary.

Mohutná búrka smeruje do Kalifornie
by Zuzana Moravcova

Obyvatelia Kalifornie momentálne očakávajú povodne, odnášajúc domáce zvieratá a osobné cennosti pokojne opúšťajú kaňony Modjeska, Williams a Silverado.

Remember Pearl Harbor
by Natalia Holvova

Attack on Pearl Harbor is the day that changed American history and made from inactive continent a superpower able to fight for their people for the whole country, for freedom and piece. That was the point when U.S. took a real part in the World War II and thousands of Americans went to support the country in the army. It has been 66 years since Pearl Harbor victims closed their eyes forever and there is almost no one beside veterans to remember the day that started to create new history of America. Today's world is different. We live in relative piece and we do not have to make a revolutionary move to set us free. We are free because this step was made by our grandfathers. We can enjoy our lives because there was someone who made sure we are able to live freely. I can not even say how much we need to thank them as well as to all of soldiers fighting in the World War II. They are maybe old men now who need assistance with their daily activities, but this does not take any of honor they deserve from the time they were at the place they were needed to be. They are living heroes, the history that is still among us and what we can do for them is keeping their acts alive even after they are gone! We need to know the reason we do not have to be scared we do not have to fight! They did it for us! Glory and fame belong to them and it always will!

Treasure of manatees
by Natalia Holvova

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission voted on Wednesday for removing manatees fro the Florida's endangered species. Manatees are reminding! This is a great success anyhow. The fact that there was a proposal for removing this threatened species out of the list means that manatees protectors made huge progress and are good in keeping and breeding this unusual water mammals. The number of the manatees has double risen since last survey in 1991 in Florida. They are still facing the danger of the extinction but they are propagating and able to grow up and have another increase. This is an amazing fact and this is also the reason why they still need special treatment and protection. There are a lot of danger specially caused by people, fishers and illegal manatee sellers. Boats and fishing nets are always endangering everyone living in the fishing areas. When these animals get stuck in the net there is no way for them to escape. If special species are on the list of protected kind, catching of them is penal and that fact makes at least some of the catchers to think and consider the consequences. The treason why manatees stayed on the list of threatened species is reviewing the animal species classification system. The commission had been considering whether to reclassify the manatee as a "threatened" species instead of "endangered". One or another term still means high level of federal protection, it is important to figure out the level of state protection though.

Snowstorm
by Natalia Holvova

Winter can be the most beautiful season in a year. Your nose is all red and you are wearing almost five different jackets still shaking of cold with gloves on your hands where you hold a plastic cap of warm vine. Christmas is coming soon and you can feel in the air that something special is going on. However, winter can also be a nightmare you have got all of sudden in the middle of the night. Snow and ice can be very cruel and freeze all your body to the frozen piece of ice. Dying in the frozen air must be one of the worse. The damage that can winter cause on people is not the only one. There is a huge power of snow, wind and rain at the same time. Snowstorms are dangerous and unexpected. Snow is falling down on the streets and in few hours we can be cut off the electricity, water can get frozen and we do not have a hiding place. Our car can get stacked and we loose all the ways to survive. If there is snow all around our house and everywhere else, it is really hard to find the way out. Snow departments need to get us ready, announce any danger of snowstorms appearance and evacuate those parts of the city that are needed. They need to do it in advance of course. There are measures we can deal with unpredicted situation, but still we need more experience, humbleness and responsibility. Just like the rescue workers in Washington State where the snowstorm caused fairy big troubles in traffic and housing situation on Monday.

Excitement about the Early Snow?
by Barbora Kasparova

Last year's winter seemed to bring little snow; this one, on the other hand, looks like it's coming way too early. The very first winter snow storms have already hit Mideast of the US yesterday and headed Northeast, hitting Vermont, New York state and Michigan, leaving at least "…11 traffic deaths, that have been blamed on weather-related traffic accidents", according to the CNN.com. Reports from Canada show a stormy weather in the East and West of the country. (http://www.canada.com/story.html?id=395a71a6-3cd3-4699-8fb7-18bf372e347d&k=89771). The United Airlines earlier this weekend have announced cancelling of flights due to the forecasted snow storms. While one would say that the snow would actually please at least those who like skiing, when it comes to the professional world of this sport, the opposite is true. The organizers of the Skiing World Cup were forced to cancel the men's super G race originally scheduled for Saturday, and set the time of the race for Monday noon. "It's an outdoor sport. This isn't knitting," said American Bode Miller, when asked about the disruptions weather can cause in ski racing. (http://canadianpress.google.com/article/ALeqM5j8vigNiHwYqqKFGr6jBhDU8rtnyA). The heavy snow fall decreased visibility to a risky level and since the skiers reach speed of 100 km/h (thus the name super G), to be able to see is crucial. Moreover, there was too much snow for the crew to clear from the racing surface.
