Treasure of manatees
by Natalia Holvova
The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission voted on Wednesday for removing manatees fro the Florida's endangered species. Manatees are reminding! This is a great success anyhow. The fact that there was a proposal for removing this threatened species out of the list means that manatees protectors made huge progress and are good in keeping and breeding this unusual water mammals. The number of the manatees has double risen since last survey in 1991 in Florida. They are still facing the danger of the extinction but they are propagating and able to grow up and have another increase. This is an amazing fact and this is also the reason why they still need special treatment and protection. There are a lot of danger specially caused by people, fishers and illegal manatee sellers. Boats and fishing nets are always endangering everyone living in the fishing areas. When these animals get stuck in the net there is no way for them to escape. If special species are on the list of protected kind, catching of them is penal and that fact makes at least some of the catchers to think and consider the consequences. The treason why manatees stayed on the list of threatened species is reviewing the animal species classification system. The commission had been considering whether to reclassify the manatee as a "threatened" species instead of "endangered". One or another term still means high level of federal protection, it is important to figure out the level of state protection though.
