Magic in the Gulf of Mexico?
by Barbora Misakova
I wish I was so naive. According to US government-sponsored study, 74 percent of the British Petroleum oil spill has been dealt with. That should mean that the shoreline of the Gulf of Mexico has been spared the worst a possible ecological disaster. “How is that?” you are asking. Let’s look at the report. First of all, we should know that a number of interagency expert scientific teams were assembled to estimate the quantity of BP Deepwater Horizon oil that has been released from the well. More than personal structure of these teams we are interested in results of this research. And that shows that three quarters of the oil “has evaporated or been ot! herwise contained” and skimming vessels are allegedly having trouble with finding any oil to remove from water. How is that possible? According to the report one quarter has evaporated or dissolved. Another 16 percent has “naturally dispersed” and one third of the total spill has been removed by human effort, including skimming. That actually means that there is remaining 26 percent that needs to be removed. But is that true? While Washington welcomed results of the research, scientists remain cautious. As Larry McKinney, director of the Texas A&M University research centre on the Gulf of Mexico, told Associated Press: “This is just way too neat. How can you even do this at this point? There is a lot of oil still floating out there.” The fear from oil that is below the surface and buried in sand and sediments is still alive, just like the concern that the report could cost the US government and save BP billions of dollars in the damage assessme! nt process.
