Rising from the fire of water.
by Milota Sidorova

Some wounds are not that easy to heal. Some of them are not easy to forget. Some will never be forgotten. Trying to ask Americans about Hurricane Catrina would be a direct punch to the open wound. Sometime ago I have read an impression on New Orleans. One student decided to participate on a voluntary program aiming to remove waste left after tropic storm.Knowing New Orleans as a jazz Mekka, certain words touched my mind. He said - “but a rhythm took hold subtly, with each beat of a brick laid down, each scrape of a dig, and the music began to play softly in the near/motionless air of New Orleans!”These words remained me of a poem, they were more beautiful than t! he whole cemetery they were describing.I couldn't help myself having those feelings of Emperor Nero watching on burning Rome. They were so delicious and imaginative that I almost forgot the catastrophe. And later on as I read more I have realized how weak was a man, when one small moment of time could ruin years and years of work and histories. If you stood there as a volunteer or just an individual, if you stand therein the middle of this wasteland you would realized that the power of your two hands would need decades to return the site back to the original shape. How vulnerable are we and how much chaos and waste can our belongings create. So many things get wrong and destroyed within a minute. It is bringing me to the point of such disbalance between creation and destruction.Destruction needs just few seconds, minutes, months or years, while real creation counts lifetimes, perhaps geological eras. What will come after that?Who will rise Phoenix spirit of the city? For Ne! w Orleans it hasn't ended. It just can't, because despite poli! cies and famous talkings, the city life can be created just by people, by their daily tasks, work and hopes, with their stories and histories they put into the network of a place.

Dumy nad mestom
by Milota Sidorova

New Orleans, mesto jazzu nachvíľu stíchlo. Jej slová mi však tú hudbu priviali späť –“ vyvstal jemný rytmus, vyvstal z každej rozmetanej tehly, z každej jamy a jazvy v zemi. Moje dve ruky by potrebovali desaťročia ustavičnej práce, aby som to miesto vrátila späť.Aká strašná disproporcia je medzi stavom kreácie a deštrukcie! Kým búrka potrebuje len niekoľko momentov alebo minút, ozajstný proces tvorby a regenerácie počíta celé ľudské, možno až geologické veky. Čo teda príde po dneskajšku?Kto vyvolá Fénixa oného mesta? Pre New Orleans sa príbeh nekončí. Život sa pomaly vracia. Ľudia svoje mesto postupne invadujú. Votkávajú doň svoje denné cesty, aktivity, radosti a starosti. Život mesta sa obnovuje. Pomaly, ale isto...

Which truth is the true one?
by Barbora Misakova

What else than laughing can a man in such a situation actually do? While at the beginning of August there was a study pointing out that three quarters of crude oil has been eliminated, at the end of the same month another study saw it differently. When researchers from National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration suggested that most of oil spill has evaporated or otherwise vanished, everyone was pleasantly surprised. Then experts from the University of Georgia said that 79 percent of the oil still remains in the water. Was that shocking? Not that much, I would say. But what if I tell you, there is still a third side – the experts that see it differently? These expe! rts say the huge gap in the reports is not impossible to reconcile. As Christophe Rousseau from the French-based Centre for Research and Testing on Accidental Water Pollution said: “You have to consider the margins of error in both studies.” According to Rousseau, scientists from both teams were working with estimates and that is the reason why results of their tests were not incorrect but just estimated and that is why so different. As Rousseau supposes, the two groups were not working with the same amounts of leaked oil. “In the case of British Petroleum, the light crude is very difficult to recover. The leak occurred off the coast and at great depths, so the percentage of oil that will remain in the ocean will be much higher.” said Rousseau. Even though the words of Christophe Rousseau sound trustworthily, people living on the shore still don’t know which truth is the true one.

Oil spill...is vanishing!?
by Barbora Misakova

This is much bigger mystery than the Loch Ness monster. How is it possible that 4.9 million barrels of oil which have escaped into the ocean from British Petroleum’s well, are now almost gone? As special report sponsored by US government has showed, three quarters of oil has evaporated, dispersed, been captured or otherwise eliminated. Remaining 25 percent of oil is so deluded that it does not seem to pose much additional threat to the environment. But how is that possible? How could so much oil so easily and quickly disappear? No one understands. Rachel Marsden, International Political and Communication Strategist, Writer and Journalist claims, that what we saw here ! is “an overreaction”. According to Marsden, overreaction was made by Obama’s administration, mainly by Democrats “because ultimately they are the ones who have the power to pass laws.” Patrick Gougeon, Director of London Campus ESCP Europe, says that legislation in the US is much too loose. As he said, he was mostly amazed by that quick change of opinions when few days ago there were people pointing at the oil spill as at the worst ecological disaster and today there are most of them saying it is ok. “There is kind of interest of most parties involved to say today it is not that much of a problem.” he said. Both, Gougeon and Marsden agreed that now people are skeptical mostly about the potential future impact of the oil spill on the environment and its long term effect. While environmentalists are looking for some culprit, Marsden points out the importance of oil in our society is too big, and oil is, at least so far, irreplaceable.!

World War II plane found in San Diego
by Zivka Deleva

Dive bomber from the World War II has been found below the surface of a San Diego lake. Navy divers appoint that the bomber dates from May 28, 1945 when its engine failed in a training exercise. The invention came thanks to a fisherman, that found the airlplane 85 feet below the surface of the reservoir. Now, 65 years after the crash, the plane named SB2C Helldiver is been salved slowly and cleaned from the mud. The public can't enter the Lower Otay Reservoir while the salvage operation lasts. At that time, the pilot made it to safe his life and swam safely to the shore. Experts are going to estimate whether it is possible for the plane to be restored and if it is, the Na! tional Naval Aviation Museum will gladly put it in its collection where it is missing. That would be a big contribution for the history of the naval aviation in the United States of America. I mean, you know Americans, they are the people that can create a news out of everything. This Museum has at least 150 planes in its collection. "We've been looking for a Helldiver for quite some time. At the end of the war, they were obsolete and so they just chopped them down, melted them and made most of them into tin cans. It wasn't a particularly good airplane" - Navy Capt. Ed Ellis said. This type of plane was pretty tough to be handled and with every reason it was named "Beast". Ever since it was prototype, the plane showed problems.

Magic in the Gulf of Mexico?
by Barbora Misakova

I wish I was so naive. According to US government-sponsored study, 74 percent of the British Petroleum oil spill has been dealt with. That should mean that the shoreline of the Gulf of Mexico has been spared the worst a possible ecological disaster. “How is that?” you are asking. Let’s look at the report. First of all, we should know that a number of interagency expert scientific teams were assembled to estimate the quantity of BP Deepwater Horizon oil that has been released from the well. More than personal structure of these teams we are interested in results of this research. And that shows that three quarters of the oil “has evaporated or been ot! herwise contained” and skimming vessels are allegedly having trouble with finding any oil to remove from water. How is that possible? According to the report one quarter has evaporated or dissolved. Another 16 percent has “naturally dispersed” and one third of the total spill has been removed by human effort, including skimming. That actually means that there is remaining 26 percent that needs to be removed. But is that true? While Washington welcomed results of the research, scientists remain cautious. As Larry McKinney, director of the Texas A&M University research centre on the Gulf of Mexico, told Associated Press: “This is just way too neat. How can you even do this at this point? There is a lot of oil still floating out there.” The fear from oil that is below the surface and buried in sand and sediments is still alive, just like the concern that the report could cost the US government and save BP billions of dollars in the damage assessme! nt process.

Legendary former senator dies in plane crash
by Claudia Sonea

“For anything that men can tell, death may be the greatest good that can happen to them (…)” said Socrates hinting that death is not the end, but the beginning of a new life without the worldly bounds. Theodore Fulton Stevens, former United States Senator from Alaska, lost his life in a plane crash this Tuesday, but entered into eternity regaining peace and serenity. The small seaplane belonging to GCI had nine people on board from which five lost their lives. It was the third accident of this type that took place in less than two weeks in the same remote area. Among the fortunate survivors were Sean O&#! 8217;Keefe, the CEO of the North American branch of EADS, and his son. Stevens, at the age of 86, departed from this world leaving behind all the troubles and scandals that surrounded him on Earth since 2008 when he was indicted for corruption and then lost the re-election bid for the US Senate. All those that sent their condolences to the family and hurried into praising him in different statements like Obama and Palin, are the same people that were against him in 2008 and accused him of wrongdoings. During his six decades in service for the American public sector, he played a very important part in the promulgation of the laws that contributed to the economic and social development of Alaska. Nonetheless, when he was accused of receiving bribes or not declaring the gifts received from VECO Corporation. It did not matter that later on all charges were dropped and his reputation was cleared, because due to the misco! nduct of the prosecutors he lost office and people’s tru! st. The legendary US Senator will forever remain in people’s heart in memory for he was a great man whose only crime was trusting in those surrounding him too much. Rest in peace beloved husband, father, son, brother; we will not forget you!

WikiLeaks - Threat for Pentagon, Alert for Public Thinking.
by Milota Sidorova

It's not even two weeks after website WikiLeaks has launched part of US military documents It's been just about two weeks that the world could take a direct look on some U.S. military documents from the war in Afghanistan and Iraq. The amount of classified documents is huge, according some sources believes WikiLeaks has released up to 77,000. Between the most disputed is the raw video recording from the U.S. helicoptere Crazyhorse and its mission from April 5th 2010 in Iraq. That was the date when U.S. helicopter shoot open fire on 15 Iraq civilians including two Reuters journalists that became international crisis. WikiLeaks suggests it received the video copy from Reuters that couldn't and didn't publish it yet. The founder of WikiLeaks, 39-years old Julian Assange said it might help focus public debate on the war in those countries and on “possible atrocities by US-led forces”.But now the fate of the site that was cited by Time Magazine as potential important! journalistic toolas the Freedom of Information Act. Pentagon has requested that site would “immediately return” all of the documents. The US Defense Department requests all versions of them obtained directly or indirectly from Pentagon databases records. Pentagon said the documents could threatened the safety of their war missions and began its own investigation. So it has ordered to all of American soldiers to stop access the WikiLeaks website to “view or download the publicized classified information”. At least that was in the message from the National Security Litigation Division of the Navy's Judge Advocate General's Corps. But Pentagon spokesman Bryan Whitman said there was not such issue in the Army and Air Force and according several sources so far it's been far-reaching effort by the Defense Department to collect and keep all the information within its own walls.
