Rising from the fire of water.
by Milota Sidorova

Some wounds are not that easy to heal. Some of them are not easy to forget. Some will never be forgotten. Trying to ask Americans about Hurricane Catrina would be a direct punch to the open wound. Sometime ago I have read an impression on New Orleans. One student decided to participate on a voluntary program aiming to remove waste left after tropic storm.Knowing New Orleans as a jazz Mekka, certain words touched my mind. He said - “but a rhythm took hold subtly, with each beat of a brick laid down, each scrape of a dig, and the music began to play softly in the near/motionless air of New Orleans!”These words remained me of a poem, they were more beautiful than t! he whole cemetery they were describing.I couldn't help myself having those feelings of Emperor Nero watching on burning Rome. They were so delicious and imaginative that I almost forgot the catastrophe. And later on as I read more I have realized how weak was a man, when one small moment of time could ruin years and years of work and histories. If you stood there as a volunteer or just an individual, if you stand therein the middle of this wasteland you would realized that the power of your two hands would need decades to return the site back to the original shape. How vulnerable are we and how much chaos and waste can our belongings create. So many things get wrong and destroyed within a minute. It is bringing me to the point of such disbalance between creation and destruction.Destruction needs just few seconds, minutes, months or years, while real creation counts lifetimes, perhaps geological eras. What will come after that?Who will rise Phoenix spirit of the city? For Ne! w Orleans it hasn't ended. It just can't, because despite poli! cies and famous talkings, the city life can be created just by people, by their daily tasks, work and hopes, with their stories and histories they put into the network of a place.
