Obama denies government botched oil spill response by Magdalena Rosova

US President Barack Obama is defending government response to oil leak which has spilled in the Gulf of Mexico five weeks ago. The government extended a moratorium on deepwater drilling and exploration for six months. The government is being criticized for slow reaction on the crisis, Obama denied such accusation. Interior Department reported progress in efforts to plug the leak. Obama reviewed the report and came up with four steps which should prevent such a disaster from happening ever again. One of the steps is suspending 33 deepwater exploratory wells in the Gulf of Mexico. This accident of oil spilled in the ocean was the worst in US history. Obama said if nothing els! e, the disaster should be a wakeup call. Already existing moratorium has been extended as well as suspension of issuing of new permits for six months. Exploration in two locations in Alaska was stopped as well. BP's Deepwater Horizon well exploded on April 20 and immediately sank. BP managed to stop the oil flow from the well on Thursday. Coast Guard chief Thad Allen is coordinating the government's activities against the spill. He said that the maneuver which stopped the flow from the leaking well begun on Wednesday and on Thursday the gush was finally under the control. BP now has to pump heavy drilling liquids into the wellhead. This action is quite risky therefore it is too early to declare victory over the spill. New research showed that the oil has been leaking from burst pipe at a rate of 12,000 or even 19,000 barrels a day, which is much more than was initially estimated.

The oil rig near Louisiana coast has become a battlefield. For more than a month, British oil company BP struggles to stop the oil flow that created a giant leak killing environment and economy of four American states. Moreover data processed by BP were not right. According governmental based team of scientists the pressure from the well was at least from two and half to five times higher than reported, so precise quotes could amount up to a million gallons oil per day drained in the sea.So far BP didn't stop the oil and all of previous atempts have failed. Neither giant underwater robots, not concrete and mud technologies could stop the flow. The only success was the compe! nsation filling – the mechanisms have joined broken pipes and they've been pumping about 65 barrels oil a minute.But this is not making situation any better. Political pressure is rising, these days even president Obama travels to see the leak himself. Congress has been discussing tough regulatives and bans on high pressure drilling in Mexican Gulf and it is possible that these new rules (along with the catastrophe) will halt total oil production from the area. Mexican Gulf has been producing up to one third of American oil consumption past years. Politicians seem to be angry and promise that BP is going to pay for everything. The pressure has risen and forced several step downs, for instance Elizabeth Birnbaum resigned from her position of a director of the Minerals Management Service, since the agency has been critized over lax oversight of drilling. Investigators want to label all responsibles, but this is clearly move on the net and the net is reaching high –! ; just in the centre of Washinghton. “Drill baby, drill&! #8221;, the motto of the last Republican presidential campaign has now turned into a tragedy, filled up with lot of annoying irony.

Ropná plošina v blízkosti louisianského pobrežia sa premenila na skutočné bojisko. Plošina, ktorá vybuchla pred mesiacom do vody vypustila ohromné množstvá ropy a britská spoločnosť BP tento prúd doteraz nedokázala zastavť. Škvrna, ktorá narástla do gigantických rozmerov sa pomocou vodných prúdov dostáva na pobrežia už štyroch amerických štátov a bezohľadne ničí životné prostredie a ekonomický život týchto oblastí.O neúspechoch spoločnosti BP nesvedčí len to! , že všetky doterajšie pokusy o zastavenie, vybetónovanie vrtu zlyhali, ale podľa vládou zostaveného tímu vedcov ich hlásenia o únikoch ropy boli nepravdivé. Ropy sa do mora dostalo minimálne dva a pol krát až päť násobne viac. BP teraz zúfalo testuje všetky možné spôsoby ako vrt zastaviť. Nepodarilo sa to obrovskými podvodnými robotmi, ani zmrazením prívodných trubíc, doteraz nevieme, či sa im podarilo vrt upchať zmesou špeciálneho bahna a betónu. Jediným doterajším úspechom je azda spätné čiastočné odsávanie uniknutej ropy – mechanizmy z vody pumpujú asi 65 barelov ropy za minútu. Do mora sa však dostane takmer milión galónov za deň.Situácia sa ani na politickej scéne nezlepšuje – tlak na vládny! ch predstaviteľov sa zvyšuje, rovnako ako oni zvy! 53;uj 50; tlak na “vinníkov”. Podľa niekoľkých senátorov spoločnosť BP zaplatí za všetky škody – ktoré sa doteraz nedali vyčísliť. Preziden Obama už neskrýva svoju nervozitu, v týchto dňoch postihnuté oblasti osobne navštívi. Doteraz sa mu podarilo presadiť zvýšenie bezpečnostných nárokov na ťažbu v zálive. Kongres sa bude zaoberať tiež novými reštrikciami a zákazmi ťažby na tomto území. Prezident Bush, ktorý povolil opätovnú ťažbu v zálive odhadoval, že “domáca” ropa pokryje až tretinovú americkú spotrebu. Ťažba sa však bude musieť výrazne obmedziť alebo zastaviť. Ostrá kritika a verejné tlaky podnietili k niekoľkým rezignáciám – š! ;lo napríklad o riaditeľku Minerals Management Service. Úrad bol ostro kritizovaný pre laxný prístup a nedôslednej kontrole ťažobných opatrení naftárskych spoločností.Vyšetrovanie by malo odhaliť zodpovedných za katastrofu – bude to však pohyb po sieti, ktorý dovedie späť do Washinghtonu. Apropó, ako asi dnes môže znieť motto poslednej prezidentskej kampane Johna McCaina - “Drill, baby drill!”?

Millions of gallons of crude oil have been spilled into the waters of Gulf of Mexico from a sea floor gusher following the explosion on the drilling platform Deepwater Horizon on 20 April. 11 platform workers were killed in an accident and 17 others were injured. The oil slick covers an area of at least 6,500 km². British Petroleum, one of the biggest companies in the world, is held responsible for the disaster and is handling the clean-up efforts. Now BP has launched an operation called “top kill”, which involves mud being pumped into the gusher. If this procedure proves successful and restricts the stream of oil the well, the company would eventually sea! l it cement. About 7 million gallons of crude oil have been spilled into Gulf of Mexico so far and are endangering more than 400 animal species living in the islands and marshlands. Apart from wildlife, also tourism industry is at stake. The BP officials estimate that chances for the success of “top kill” technique are at 60 to 70 percent. The thing is it was used only above ground until now, not 5,000 feet beneath the sea. As to the reasons behind the catastrophe, number of statements from witnesses has been collected by the Associated Press and they point to an equipment failure and a somewhat slow reaction or cracks within the system of command. "I overheard upper management talking saying that BP was taking shortcuts by displacing the well with saltwater instead of mud without sealing the well with cement plugs, this is why it blew out," read a statement from Transocean rig worker to the Coast Guard. President Barack Obama has called the oil spill a “h! eartbreaking” disaster and pledged not to “rest un! til this well is shut, the environment is repaired and the cleanup is complete.”

Americký prezident Barack Obama vyžiadal 1200 vojakov národnej gardy, ktorí majú zabezpečiť pokoj a bezpečnosť na mexickej hranici na juhu krajiny. Obama tiež vyžiadal 500 miliónov amerických dolárov na zaistenie ochrany na hranici a na aktivity súvisiace s uplatňovaním zákona. Prezident sa snaží zaviesť komplexnú imigrantskú reformu, ktorá je okrem iného i jeho dlhodobým cieľom. Obama bol nútený promptne zareagovať na zhoršujúcu sa situáciu po tom, čo Arizona chválila tvrdý imigrantský z&#! 225;kon a problém na hranici sa tak dostal do pozornosti verejnosti. Guvernérka Arizony Jan Brewerová priznala svoje nádeje, že podpísanie kontroverzného zákona prinúti Obamu konať. Po schválení zákona jasne vyhlásila, že nový zákon má za úlohu iniciovať rozhovory o narastajúcom probléme s imigrantmi. Požaduje od Washingtonu, aby okamžite jednal v štáte Arizona ako aj v ostatných hraničných štátoch. Úlohou Národnej gardy v Arizone bude podpora v dozore a obhliadkach na hranici, v analýzach a v tréningu. Vojská by mali štátu tiež pomôcť zastaviť obchod s drogami. Dočasne budú zastupovať aj agentov pohraničnej hliadky, dokiaľ nebudú zamestnaní a vytrénovaní noví agenti. Bývalý prezident George W. Bush pos! lal v roku 2006 na hranicu tisícky vojakov. Vojská m! ali za & #250;lohu pomáhať v pomocných prácach a napomáhať imigrantským agentom. Avšak dnes už Bushov program vypršal, a preto politici z hraničných štátov žiadajú vyslanie nových vojsk, ktoré im majú pomôcť zastaviť a obmedziť pašeráctvo s drogami. American President Barack Obama requested 1,200 National Guard troops to manage security along the border with Mexico. Obama will also order $500 million for border protection and law enforcement activities. The president is trying to set new complex immigration reform, which is also one of his long-stated goal. After Arizona's passage of a tough illegal-immigration law, the border problem got into the public spotlight and Obama was forced to do something about it. Gov. Jan Brewer said she hoped signing the controversial law would press Obama to act. After signing the law she clearly stated that the law should initiate talks over the increasing problem with immigrants. S! he wants Washington to take action in Arizona and other border states. Responsibility of National Guard troops in Arizona will be work on intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance support, analysis and training. The troops should also help to halt drug trafficking. Temporarily they will also supplement Border Patrol agents until new officers and agents will be recruited and trained. Former President George W. Bush sent thousands of troops to the border in 2006. The troops were supposed to perform support duties and help immigration agents. But now the program is over and therefore politicians from border states asked for new troops to be sent and help to stop and prevent human and drug smuggling and to deal with Mexico's drug violence that is spreading into the United States. Republican senators met President at the Capitol and demanded sending of troops to the border and deal with immigration issues. Arizona's senators also required such a move.

He is a lucky man! What is the possibility for a man to save his head just before a death sentence should be executed? There is almost none possibility to that, only on a Western movies, perhaps. Hank Skinner is been charged on a triple murder in 1995, but his obviously smart lawyer convinced Texas prosecutor that his DNA should be checked in, for the final decision. So, the Supreme Court is going to give Skinner a second chance, who believes that that would prove his innocence and save his life.   He was sentenced for killing his girlfriend Twila Busby and her two ill adult sons. Skinner's main evidence was that at the time when the murders had happened, he was drunk ! and under the influence of Xanax, a drug which is used to treat anxiety disorders, panic disorders and anxiety caused by depression. He also has stated that the real killer was Busby's uncle who molested her. He died in a car accident two years after the murders.   This case opens a new episode in the legislation of this country. The decision for a DNA approval might mean that hundreds of prisoners might have that right and might prove their innocence. For a laic like me, honestly, it is very strange why shouldn't the DNA analyses be considered as one of the most important evident when it comes to proving innocence?  "It's extremely significant for the Supreme Court to hear this case. That gives us a lot of hope for other cases down the pike" - said Cory Session of Fort Worth, policy director of the Innocence Project of Texas.  The 47 year old Skinner is married to a French anti-death penalty campaigner he met after he was convicted in 1995 for the killings. ! Even French President Nicolas Sarkozy and Foreign Minister Ber! nard Kou chner gave support to this man.

Ropný gigant BP PLC zverejnil výsledky svojho interného vyšetrovania masívneho úniku ropy do Mexického zálivu. Americká federálna vláda pozorne skúma výsledky vyšetrovania BP. Vyšetrovanie spoločnosti sa zameriavalo na dve kľúčové oblasti. Prvou je zatmelenie otvoru na praskutom žriedle na dne oceánu a druhou oblasťou je vyvinutie zariadenia na prevenciu možnej erupcie v budúcnosti. Neskoro v pondelok spoločnosť BP povedala, že ešte nedošla ku konečným uzáverom. Napriek tomu povedala, že zaistila viacero k! ontrolných mechanizmov, ktoré majú zabrániť, aby sa podobná nehoda zopakovala v budúcnosti. Ropná plošina Deepwater Horizon explodovala 20. apríla a po výbuchu sa potopila do oceánu. Explózia usmrtila 11 ľudí a spôsobila výbuch žriedla na dne oceánu, z ktorého sa následne vyliala ropa do Mexického zálivu. Vážne hrozilo, že rozlievajúca sa ropa spôsobí závažnú enviromentálnu katastrofu v zálive a na pobreží. BP sa všemožne snaží nájsť najlepší spôsob, ako zachytiť vyliatu ropu v oceáne a zabrániť tak vzniknutiu envoromentálenj pohromy. Nanešťastie sa zatiaľ ani jeden pokus nepdaril a rozliata ropa stále nie je pod kontrolou. Bobby Jindal, guvernér Louisiany, sa rozhodol ochrániť pobrežie &#! 353;tátu vybudovaním pieskových zábran a d! okonca n echce čakať na schválenie od federálov. Mŕtve zvieratá naplnili pobrežie zálivu a New Orleans bol nútený zatvoriť verejnú pláž. Podľa riaditeľa BP PLC nehodu spôsibila rada náhodných nehôd zavinená neočakávanou kombináciu pochybení. BP teraz bude konzultovať svoje interné vyšetrovanie s americkým ministerstvom vnútra. Vyšetrovanie nehody však ešte nie je konca, stále veľa nezodpovedaných otázok, ktoré treba preskúmať. Napríklad je potrebné preskúmať zariadenie, ktoré je stále uväznené na dne oceánu.

In this County, the annual heroin deaths have nearly tripled - from 10 to 29 in the last four years. This drug is very popular especially in the rural areas. Do not be confused, it is not like this drug is new. It used to be connected to rock stars from 1970's, but that it was 5 percent pure, unlike today, when it has doubled pureness and lowered the price. Mexican dealers found a way to attract more attention to new addicts. Today you can find even 80 percent pure heroin. Instead of fighting against this evil, the world has gone crazy, and getting more and more users, and to a new different group of users. This only goes in favor of the Mexican smugglers, now that cocaine and methamphetamine is more and more difficult to find on the market. Oil giant BP reported resulst of its internal investigation into the massive oil spill in Gulf of Mexico. US federal government is carefully observing the BP's report. The investigation was focused on two key areas. First is cementing at the wll head and the second one is the blowout preventer. BP told late Monday that it had not reached a final conclusion yet. But several control mechanisms should prevent the accident to happen again. A Deepwater Horizon oil rig exploded April 20, killed 11 people and blew out an undersea well that spilled oil into the Gulf of Mexico. There was a serious threat that leaking oil would create an environmental disaster for four Gulf Coast sta! tes. BP was trying to find the best way how to trap the oil spilled in the ocean and prevent the environmental damgae. Unfortunately, none of the attempts to to control the scope have been successful yet. Bobby Jindal, Gov. of Louisiana, wants to protect the shate's shore with sand booms and he is not willing to wait for federal approval. Dead animals filled the shores and the oil has forced New Orleans to shut down the public beach. Chief executive of BP PLC, told that it was a complex accident caused by an unprecedented combination of failures. BP will now share the findings of its investigation with the U.S. Department of the Interior. The work is still not finished, there is a lot to do. For example, there is need to examine major pieces of equipment which are still on the seafloor.

I believe in God, even though I don’t believe in church anymore. I know that people can take some “god matters” sometimes too seriously and I usually try to understand it, but some of these things really make me sick and angry. The leader of an American group, Laura Silsby, who was convicted by a judge for arranging illegal travel of 33 children out of Haiti after the January earthquake, was freed. I am totally O.K. with the fact she was freed, but calling the whole investigating process as the ordeal is too much for me! This 40-year-old businesswoman had courage to call it “ordeal” and instead of thinking why did she get to this situation like! this, she praised a God by saying “God has been there with me every single second. He has given me strength and peace throughout every moment of this trial.” I don’t have to be missionary helping orphans nor 40-year-old businesswoman (who is expected to know the law at least a bit) to know that taking child or children from one country to another without informing authorities of the country and proper papers will be understood as illegal activity. Silsby and other members of the church group insisted they had only come to Haiti to help. But hiding activities like this under, in many cases, pretended altruism, will never apologize activities themselves. Silsby who had been in custody since January 29 deserves even bigger punishment – just for her naivety and stupidity. What was she thinking? That God will protect her even when she is breaking secular law? People like her with their certainty that nothing bad will happen to them just because they serv! e to God, simply makes me mad. I will pray to God not to allow! her to help orphans like she did in Haiti again.

Immigration has been a difficult problems on Southern borders of the U.S. Despite toughing laws and proposals from American part. And it seemed immigration numbers have been declining, but the recent report showed it was again on increase. Especially in Arizona where the most restrictive anti-immigration laws were passed. Some states (like California or Texas) especially during 1990s sealed their borders with corrugated metal and chain link fences. This reduced illegal immigrants numbers. New Mexico and Arizona reported significant drop from 1.2 million in 2005 to 541,00 last year. But the situation changed directions.Most of immigrants risk their lives in wasteland deserts! of Arizona. The passage sometimes takes more than a week and newcomers walk without any food or water supplies. They are more than vulnerable during the journey. Too often, are they stopped by drug thugs or similar heavily armed groups that rob them or kill some of them. They control passages and desperate survivors must pay fees. Yet the journey is not over. They may be caught by American police, sent back to Mexico or to jail. Some of them get scared, but some of them are too desperate and too poor to return back. So they keep on trying at any cost.But there are victims also among American citizen living in the border areas. Sometimes they are being shot on their own property of just by passing large dessert.This issue is so serious that it will also be a topic of upcoming official dinner in Washinghton during Mexican President Felipe Calderon's visit.

Partial success on capping the oil flow by Claudia Sonea

After almost a month BP Plc is still having issues in containing the oil that gushed following the rupture of an oil well in Gulf of Mexico. However, the oil company made an official statement this week saying a new method has been used and the success of the method makes them believe in about a week the flow will be stopped permanently. No information was released as to how much oil has been captured using a mile-long tube and BP did not offer any guarantees regarding the capping of the oil permanently in a week. In the meantime the oil plumes in the Gulf and the damages on the environment are becoming alarming. Although, the oil company and t! he government say that the harm on the ocean wildlife and the shorelines was minimal, oil debris and tar balls can be seen floating close to the beaches of Louisiana, Alabama and Mississippi. For the time been there is no clear data on how the oil flow affected the fish species in the Gulf, the birds and other wildlife. BP and the government have released only some information on the leak, the rate and range of escaping oil. Thus the public kept under control on how to perceive the incident although the simple fact that it is worse than the 1989 Exxon Valdez should raise serious concerns. Up to now, the only consolation is that the government will force the oil company to cover all the expenses leading from the incident. Inšpekcie ropnej plošiny, ktorá vybuchla neprebiehali tak často ako mali by Zuzana Zelenakova

Podľa americkej výsledkom vyšetrovania tlačovej agentúry Associated Press sa na vybuchnutej ropnej plošine v Mexickom zálive zanedbali pravidelné inšpekcie. Plošina mala prejsť kontrolou aspoň raz za mesiac, no zdá sa, že vládna agentúra zodpovedná za jej bezpečnú prevádzku pravidelné inšpekcie nerobila až tak pravidelne. Vrtná plošina vybuchla 20. apríla, zomrelo 11 ľudí a 17 ďalších bolo zranených. Výbuch a následný únik ropy do vody spôsobil obrovskú ekologickú katastrofu. Ropa ! neustále prúdi do vody v zálive, každý deň približne 800 000 litrov. Podľa správ z 3. mája pokrývala ropná škvrna asi 6 500 kilometrov štvorcových. Americká vláda označila za hlavného vinníka britskú spoločnosť British Petroleum, ktorá s najväčšou pravdepodobnosťou ponesie všetky finančné náklady za škody a záchranné práce. Napriek tomu, že spoločnosť zodpovednosť prijala, hlavní predstavitelia tvrdia, že výbuch nebol chybou BP, pretože v tom čase vrtnú plošinu prevádzkovala spoločnosť Transocean Ltd. Vládna agentúra Minerals Management Service, ktorá patrí pod ministerstvo vnútra Spojených štátov a ktorej reputácia je teraz v stávke, bola už dlhšie kritizovaná za ! to, že udržiavala až príliš blíz! ky č ;i priateľský vzťah s ropnými spoločnosťami. Exploded rig was not inspected as frequently as it should be by Zuzana Zelenakova

According to the Associated Press investigation, the inspections of the exploded rig Deepwater Horizon in Gulf of Mexico were neglected. The rig was supposed to be inspected at least once a month, however, the federal agency responsible for its safe operating seems to have neglected the regular inspections. The rig exploded on April 20, 2010 killing 11 people and causing enormous environmental catastrophe. Oil is constantly pouring into the water in the Gulf, estimated 210,000 gallons per day. According to the reports from May 3, 2010, the oil slick covers about 2,500 square miles (6,500 km²). British energy company BP is held responsible for the catastrophe and will ! bear all the financial consequences most likely. Although the company accepted responsibility, it claims the explosion was not their fault as the rig was operated by Transocean Ltd at the time. The federal Minerals Management Service, a branch of Interior Department, whose reputation is at stake now has been criticized for quite some time now for its handling the oil drilling industry. Neither Congress nor President Barrack Obama like somewhat too close relationship between oil companies and the agency, and they promised a reform of MMS. Apparently, the MMS failed at keeping an organized and transparent documentation and got too lazy or sure of itself that it even let the companies running the rigs to do their own inspections. "The thing I regret most is that, to my knowledge, MMS has not fixed the data management problem they have," said John Shultz who as a graduate student studied the MMS inspection program for his dissertation. "If you have the data you need, the analy! sis becomes fairly straightforward. Without the data, you're s! imply st uck with conjectures." Currently, the researchers are worried that the oil might enter the major current in the Gulf and thus get to the Florida Keys and further to the West coast.

Someone has to be blamed for the last month's huge oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. While some executives have been punished, now it's the turn of Obama's administration to face the guilt. Interior Secretary Ken Salazar and few other federal officials are going to be investigated under the suspicion that the US government hasn't' t done it's best to prevent the oil spill consequences. Chris Oynes, associate administrator of this agency, was the first administration official to resign in the wake of the oil spill. Mr. Salazar is trying to defend himself. "The 'Beyond Petroleum' oil spill is a stark reminder of how we must continue to push ahead with the reforms we have be! en working on and which we know are needed," Salazar said in a statement. The Environmental Protection Agency is suppose to monitor the offshore drilling. This agency officers are going to be questioned in front of two Senate committees. US President Barack Obama was the one that insisted for a commission to be formed to investigate what caused the explosion that discharge millions of gallons of oil into the Gulf. Even after three weeks of extremely big efforts to stop the process, the oil still makes problems. It is a menace to the living world, the most, not to speak how expensive are the material aftermath. Vrtná plošina Deepwater Horizon v Mexickom zálive vybuchla 20. apríla a potopila sa o dva dni na to. Pri výbuch zomrelo 11 ľudí a do vody začala prúdiť ropa. V najväčšom ohrození sú štáty Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi a Florida. Vláda Spojených štátov určila za vinníka katastrofy energetickú spoločnosť BP, ktorá je štvrtou najväčšou spoločnosťou na svete. Vrtnú plošinu prevádzkovala spoločnosť Transocean Ltd, ktorej ju prenajímala BP. Každý deň sa do vody dostá! ;va asi 800 000 litrov ropy. Ropa prúdi z podmorského prameňa, na ktorý sa v sobotu pracovníkom ropnej spoločnosti podarilo namontovať približne jeden a pol kilometra dlhé potrubie, to by malo aspoň časť ropy odviesť do pristaveného tankera. „Samozrejme, že čím rýchlejšie to namontujú, tým lepšie, no obrovská škoda na životnom prostredí už bola spáchaná,“ povedal Paul Montagna z Harteovho inštitútu na texaskej vysokej škole Texas A&M University. „Musíme zistiť presné množstvo ropy, ktorá do zálivu prúdi.“ Milióny litrov ropy sú už vo vode a vedci sa teraz obávajú, že by sa mohla dostať do hlavného prúdu v zálive, ktorý by ju mohol odplaviť až k súostroviu Florida Keys a potom ďalej k v! ýchodnému pobrežiu USA. Bolo vyslané pries! kumn 3; plavidlo, aby zozbieralo viac informácií. V sobotu sa tiež v New Orleanse uskutočnil dobročinný koncert nazvaný Gulf Aid, ktorého cieľom bolo vyzbierať peniaze pre ľudí asi najviac postihnutých touto katastrofou, pre rybárov. Oil spill in Gulf of Mexico might have entered major current by Zuzana Zelenakova

On April 20, drilling rig Deepwater Horizon in Gulf of Mexico exploded and sank two days after that. Eleven people were killed and great amount of oil spilled into the water. States of Louisiana, Alabama, Mississippi and Florida are in greatest danger. The US government is holding responsible the British global energy company BP plc, which is the fourth largest company in the world. About 210,000 gallons of oil are pouring into the Gulf per day. The oil is streaming from an undersea well, on Sunday engineers managed to install a mile-long tube that takes at least a part of the oil into the tanker ship. "Obviously the quicker they plug this the better, but they are already ! having a tremendous effect on the environment," said Paul Montagna from Harte Research Institute for Gulf of Mexico Studies at Texas A&M University. "In the end, we have to figure out how much is actually pouring into the Gulf." Millions of gallons of crude oil are already in the water and now researchers are worried that it could have entered a major current in the Gulf, that could carry it right to the Florida Keys and then to the East Coast. Research vessel was dispatched to collect more information. According to William Hogarth, dean of the University of South Florida´s College of Marine Science, one computer model shows that the oil has already entered the current that loops around to the east Coast, while the other one says the oil is three miles from it. Also Mexican officials expressed their fears that the spill could reach their coast if it is not stopped by August, which is the time when the currents reverse and flow south. Gulf Aid concert was held Sunday in! New Orleans in order to raise money for people affected most ! directly by the oil spill, fishermen. Headliners included Lenny Kravitz, Mos Def or Allen Toussaint.

The oil leak is spreading fast and BP Plc seems to be overwhelmed by the situation. Since the rupture of the oil well took place on April the 20th, various methods of capping it have been tested, but without any success. Six ROVs were deployed to close the blowout preventer valves and now there are political and environmental pressures on the company to stop the oil leak before it reached land. Obama and his administration is requesting the British oil company cover all expenses with the cleanup of the oil leak and to repair the damage caused to other industries in the area , like fishing. Florida, Mississippi! and Alabama expect for the oil spill to hit beaches at the latest on Saturday in the evening. The coastal areas will lose financially over 2 billion dollars and environmental y the proportions of the catastrophe are hard to even imagine. BP is losing money too and the oil spill is spreading with a rapidness that requires immediate action. Many of those who supported the offshore drilling in California are now withdrawing from the project, California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger included. As it is, the rig explosion hampered with Obama’s plan to open up new regions to offshore drilling, but it was a victory for the environmentalists. Although Obama announced that pressure is made for the British company, at the end of the meeting the US Senate Committee approved a $68 million plan to help those affected by the spill. Nájde sa na tejto zemi aspoň jedno miesto, kde budeme môcť žiť v pokoji? To je pravdepodobne jedna z najčastejších otázok, aké si imigranti kladú. Samozrejme, hovoriť o imigrantoch vo všeobecnosti je čosi iné ako hovoriť o konkrétnych typoch imigrácií. Ľudia, ktorí putujú do cudzích kútov sveta „len“ preto, aby si našli lepšiu prácu, je už iný príbeh. Napriek tomu by sme nemali (ako ľudia) zabúdať na skutočnosť, že s mnohými sa život veľmi nepekne zahral. Je tu v! 53;ak aj druhá strana mince. Vláda je zodpovedná za život v krajine a jej primárnym cieľom je zabezpečiť jeho čo najvyššiu kvalitu pre jej právoplatných obyvateľov. A tieto dva valiace sa kamene neustále tlačia na migrantov. Hoci nový zákon štátu Arizona, ktorý zaviedol tvrdé opatrenia voči migrantom príde do platnosti až v júli, mnohí prišelci a ilegálni robotníci sa boja. Efrain Gaytan – majiteľ mexickej reštaurácie hovorí: „Predtým tu bývalo množstvo ľudí, ktorí prichádzali na raňajky, ale teraz sa každý bojí, že bude vyhostený.“ Od 23. apríla, kedy Arizonský republikánsky guvernér Jan Brewer podpísal návrh zákona, Gaytanove tržby klesli o 35 – 40 percent. Hoci tento zákon! vyžaduje „len“ skontrolovanie imigračn&! #233;ho statusu dotyčného, každý kto je v krajine nezákonne sa bojí oprávnene. Takmer dve tretiny voličov v Arizone a väčšina ľudí celoštátne podporila tento zákon. Sú tu však aj jeho oponenti, ktorí ho považujú za protiústavný a podporujúci rasovú profiláciu. Otázkou teda zostáva, k čomu bude tento zákon skutočne viesť? Viera, že úplne „vyčistí“ krajinu je nereálna. Niektorí z imigrantov určite krajinu opustia, no myslím si, že väčšina z nich sa bude skrývať a po čase sa opäť vráti do práce. Stane sa teda z Arizony štát duchov?

Dobrovoľníci na pobreží sa snažia zmierňovať následky ropného znečitenia. Mŕtve ryby, na smrť vyhladovan&#! 233; a ropou obalené vtáky, voda, ktorá vyplavuje nerozložiteľnú tekutinu na skaly. Ropa, ktorá vsiaka do piesku, preniká k spodným vodám. Ropa, ktorá vstupuje do ústia rieky, rastliny, ktoré odhnívajú. Dobrovoľníci sa snažia postup ropy na brehoch spomaľovať násypmi piesku. Kým však nevyradia vrt z prevádzky, situácia sa k lepšiemu nezmení. Následky sú však viac než len znepokojivé. Škvrna spôsobila ostrý pokles turistickej návštevnosti štyroch štátov (Louisiana, Alabama, Florida a Mississippi). Škvrna uštedrila devastujuci zásah rybárskemu priemyslu všetkých štyroch krajín. Morské a prímorské ekosystémy sú vážne ohrozené. Krajina sa mení veľkou rýchlosťou. Dôsledky. Poli! tcké? Ekonomické? Spoločenské? Ekologick&#! 233;? De vastujúce... Senátori už dva dni vypočúvajú Lamara McKaya (BP), Stevena Newmana (Transocean) a Tima Proberta (Halliburton). V týchto chvíľach však málokedy dôjde k otvorenému priznaniu. Americké média situáciu popisujú ako ukazovanie prstom na toho druhého. Zodpovednosť sa prenáša, čas sa míňa. Nie je isté aké sankcie (a či vôbec) postihnú spoločnosti, ktoré spravovali tento vrt. Nervózny je aj prezident Spojených štátov. Očakával, že spoločnosti budú schopné vrt zapečatiť a zastaviť únik ropy do mora. Pre prípad zastavil celú doterajšiu aj plánovanú ťažbu v Mexickom zálive. Čas a peniaze. Stará známa schéma. Dnes však ide o viac.

Will we find a peace at least at one place on Earth? That’s probably one of the most frequent questions immigrants ask themselves. Of course, talking in general about people moving from countries illegally just to find better work is another story. But we shouldn’t forget that life is treating some of them really badly. On the other hand, there is a government which main duty is to protect people living in their country. And these two rolling stones are mashing immigrants all the time. Even though Arizona’s new law cracking down on illegal immigrants goes into effect in July, many of incomers and illegal workers are already afraid. Efrain Gaytan – th! e owner of Mexican diner says: “Before, there would have been a lot of people eating breakfast but now everyone is worried that they are going to get pulled over.” Since April 23, when Arizona’s Republican Governor Jan Brewer signed the bill into law, Gaytan’s turnover slumped 35 to 40 percent. Although this new law requires “only” checking of the immigration status by police, everyone who is in country illegally is worried rightfully. Almost two-thirds of Arizona voters and also majority of voters nationwide supported this law. But there are also some opponents whose point at it as at unconstitutional act which supports racial profiling. The question is what this law will actually lead to. Belief that the whole country will be completely “cleared” is unreal. Some of them of course will have to leave, but there will still remain a group of people trying to hide for a while and then start working again. Will Arizona become a gh! ost state?

Troubles that waited for BP, Transocean and Halliburton's executives down in Washinghton were just a childish play compared to hell, rescue teams and volunteers have had to fight near Louisiana coast. More than 20 days have passed since the explosion on oil rig in Mexican Gulf and the oil catastrophe has been still alive. Each and every day it's been growing, endangering thousands of miles of sea and coastal region. More than 20 days have passed and there was nothing that could stop the oil flow. Consequences are more than disturbing. Except of sharp decline of tourism and business in four states (Louisiana, Mississippi, Florida and Alabama), it is a deadly attack on sea f! auna. This is threatening and killing fishing industry, but also the whole stability of the area. Thousands of thousands of species have been attacked and fight with a little chance to win over human destruction. The whole country has been changed. Consequences. Somewhere in the safe seats of White House, there is an anger about BP, Transocean and Halliburton companies. These three – Lamar McKay from BP, Steven Newman from Transocean and Tim Probert from Halliburton were in charge over oil rig during or soon before the accident. President Obama showed anger, they weren't able to stop the oil (not even army and thousands of volunteers were able to). Perhaps he had publicly realized this was beyond his measure and immediately passed the legislation to stop all mining production in Mexican Gulf. Three CEOs visited Senate and stood in front of Senators for hearings. How could they behave? Pointing fingers at each other, indeed. It is certain, these people will escape the! ir fates, the money will make the exit way. They will leave th! e wastel and behind, millions of people influenced by their profit. Even if they lost every dollar they've had, that would mean less than a drop of that dying sea.

Oklahoma and parts of Kansas hit by tornadoes by Zuzana Zelenakova

Large areas of Oklahoma and some minor parts of Kansas were hit by numerous tornadoes on Monday, May 10. Storms killed five people and there are several dozens of those injured. Most of the damage was caused in southern suburbs of the Oklahoma City and in the vicinity of Norman, Oklahoma. "The kids and I got in the closet and prayed," said Jamie Keyes from Norman, the Oklahoma City suburb. "I heard a hiss. It was like something was whistling very loud." As far as casualties are concerned, two people were killed in Oklahoma City and three in Cleveland County. According to the Oklahoma City officials, a young boy died after being hit by a piece of debris in his home and a ma! n died under an overthrown vehicle. The residents of the Oklahoma City witnessed the formation of three storms on Monday. "We've had a very strange event: multiple tornadic portions with this event as it came through," said David Barnes, the emergency management director for Oklahoma County. "We have multiple vehicles overturned, a housing addition has had multiple homes destroyed." In Kansas, the biggest damage was reported in Belmont, where several homes were hit and the area experienced power blackouts, however, fortunately there were no injuries. Baseball-sized hail was another dangerous part of the violent storms. "I came home once to look at my own personal vehicle and the windshield was all bashed out. The grandchildren's swing set was up and now it's gone, so there was straight-line winds that came through," said Sheriff Charlie Tucker from Alfalfa County. Tornadoes, where wind reached the speed of 103 mph, had been predicted earlier by the Storm Prediction Centre a! t Norman. Now the cleanup begins with families going through t! heir dam aged homes and belongings searching for what could be saved.

Afghanistan and USA are friends again by Zivka Deleva

Afghan President Hamid Karzai is visiting the United States of America. What a hypocrite the politics is, they come to your country and kill innocent people, and you praise them. Karzai had a meeting with Barack Obama and visited as well the wounded U.S troops. Not only he visited the U.S, but said he was sorry about the soldiers that died in his country. The last year, the officials of the both country didn't communicate much and seemed like they don't have much to say to one another. More or less, Obama's administration is giving support to Karzai's government. The US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton had quite a friendly statement concerning this country, saying that t! he United States had a long-term commitment to Apghan country. The idea of the four-day visit was quite clear, to make friends again and improve the relationship. Though, the US officials not rare criticize Karzai. "Never better aligned" - that's what the US ambassador to Kabul, Karl Eikenberry said at the White House press conference, meaning of the same interests the both sides have as partners. "Through the talks over the next several days, I think we’re going to emerge with even better alignment. Afghanistan is a close friend and ally and of course I highly respect President Karzai in that capacity" - he said. The both presidents decided that it would be good for the Afghanistan in the field of agriculture, army and police, off course. American friends recommended Karzai to pay more attention to the Taliban guerrillas and to try to integrate them in the society, the more possible. Oh my goodness, it seems so easy to give someone advises and not to try to effectuat! e the same thing, and implement criminals in its own country. !

The question who will replace 90-year-old John Paul Stevens at the end of the Supreme Court’s 2009-2010 term has been occupying many political minds for few months. President Barack Obama has picked for the court two women – first Hispanic Justice Sonia Sotomayor was picked last year. On Monday Obama nominated another one – Elena Kagan. Kagan is now the Solicitor General of the United States and she is the first woman holding this office. If she is confirmed by the Senate, she will be the first non-judge to reach the summit of US Justice in four decades. Obama expressed his positive outlook on Kagan when he said she “embodies excellence, independence! , integrity and passion for the law.” But Republicans don’t share the same opinion and they are pointing at her lack of judicial pedigree. As they warned she may misinterpret laws for political reasons. Ron Klain, Joe Biden’s chief of staff holds with Obama and he described Kagan as “pragmatic and progressive”. But Republicans, especially Republican Senator John Cornyn are not giving it up. As he said: “She is surprising choice from a president who has emphasized the importance of understanding ‘how the world works and how ordinary people live’”. By these words he just tried to point at her lack of judicial experience (as all Republicans do), which is a necessary credential for a Supreme Court Justice. Another Republican – Jon Kyl warned it wouldn’t be so easy for Kagan to get confirmation ride as Supreme Court Justice because “a temporary political appointment is far different than a lifetime appointme! nt to the Supreme Court.” Well, well, decision-making wo! n’ t be easy!

Plán s železným lievikom neuspel by Magdalena Rosova

Koncern BP, tretia najväčia energetická spoločnosť na svete, neuspela so svojim nádejným plánom na zastavenie úniku ropy do Mexického zálivu. Plán pozostával zo spustenia 100-tonového železného lievika na dno oceánu, kde sa mal lievik dostať k rope, ktorá sa dostala do mora po explózii vrtnej plošiny Deepwater Horizon. Vrtná plošina explodovala 20. apríla a potom sa potopila. Odvtedy ropa neprestajne vyteká do oceánu. Plán zlyhal kvôli technickému problému v podobe metanhydrátu. Metanhydrát bránil želez! nému lieviku dostať sa na správne miesto. Doug Suttles, hlavný riadiaci predstaviteľ spoločnosti BP, povedal: „Ako sme sa snažili umiestniť lievik do centra úniku ropy, vytvorilo sa pri lieviku obrovské množstvo metanhydrátu, kvôli ktorému sme boli nútení odsunúť lievik od jadra unikajúcej ropy. Napriek neúspechu si Suttles nemyslí, že plán zlyhal a naďalej verí, že nájdu spôsob, ako lievik dostať na správne miesto. Lievik je momentálne jediným riešením, ktorým by BP mohla v krátkom čase dostať únik ropy pod kontrolu. Ak využitie lieviku zlyhá, môže trvať dva až tri mesiace kým sa spoločnosti podarí zastaviť vytekanie ropy do oceánu. Lievik by mal presmerovať tok ropy spod takmer 1,6 kilometrov pod hladinou oceá! ;nu a následne vypumpovať ropu do tankera na hladine! . Na&# 271;alej však hrozí, že unikajúca ropa spôsobí environmentálnu katastrofu štyrom štátom na pobreží. Prekážkou k využitiu masívneho železného lievika je tvoriaci sa metahydrát, ktorý zanáša otvor lievika. BP musela lievik odložiť stranou a momentálne odpočíva na dne oceánu, približne 200 metrov od zdroja úniku ropy. BP pravdepodobne použije horúcu vodu, ktorá by mohla zohriať hydráty. Druhou možnosťou je využitie hydrokarbonu, ktorý by mal metahydrát zriediť.

L'accident qu'a fait Faisal Shahzad, un Pakistanais-Américain, dans une voiture à Times Square à New York il y a cinq jours, peut-on appeller 'one man shoe'. Bien que le groupe terroriste Taliban a admis qu'il est responssable de l'acte, l'homme de 30 ans nie n'importe quel rapport au groupe radical. Il a expliqué tous les détails requis pour l'investigation, ont dit les autorités qui mènent la recherche. Il a été attrapé tandis qu'il essayait de fuir par avion de l'aéroport de JFK à Dubaï. Il va être jugé à la Cour fédérale de Manhattan. Shahzad est un citoyen des États-unies d! epuis l'année dernière et était très facile à être dépisté. Il a également laissé beaucoup d'empreintes dans le camion qu'il avait volé. En tous cas nous parlons d'un criminel très gâcheur. L'homme qui a vendu le camion l'a décrit comme un homme de taille moyenne - oriental ou hispanique. Peut-être il nie une relation avec le groupe Taliban mais il est très soupçonneux pourquoi il a passé presque cinq mois dans une ville au nord-ouest du Pakistan, où la plupart des groupes de frondeurs ont leurs sièges sociaux. Tandis que les autorités et les citoyens des États-unis, sont inquiétés bien sûr de ces genres d'incidents, il n'y a pas grand nombre de gens qui s'intéressent d'un tel acte au Pakistan. Auparavant, les fonctionnaires pakistanais montrent le grand intérêt de la coopération avec l'ambassadeur des Etats-Unis dans leur pays, ! Anne Patterson. Le groupe qui a prononcée la responsabili! té de l'accident a été mené par Hakimullah Mehsud, l'homme qui a été censé d'être mort, après les attaques d'une caverne par les forces américaines en janvier où on l'a cru souffrir. Mais, le même homme a envoyé des videos au gouvernement des États-unis avec les messages menaçants que des villes principales vont être attaquées. Peut-être devrions-nous considérer ces menaces un peu plus au sérieux, ne pensez-vous pas ?

Je crois que j'ai raison quand j'affirme qu'il est inutile de parler de la nocivité humaine. Nous savons tous ce que nous faisons à la nature qui nous entoure et aux créatures vivant dans lui. Nous détruisons des fôrets juste pour construire de nouvelles routes ; nous tuons le grand nombre des animaux juste pour satisfaire notre appétit, nous polluons l'air juste pour voyager plus rapidement et plus confortablement et nous polluent l'eau aussi bien juste pour avoir de l'huile qui est nécessaire pour toutes autres choses. Même la plus petite quantité d'hydrocarbure liquide de pétrole fuit dans l'environnement est due aux acti! vités humaines. Quoique ce ne soit pas le seul mal que nous faisons, c'est probablement la plus mauvaise forme de pollution parce que ça prend des mois ou même des années pour nettoyer les flaques d'huile. C'est dangereux non seulement pour des poissons, oiseaux et d'autres animaux de mer, mais également pour nous, pour notre vie dans le futur et ce qui est en plus, les vies de nos enfants. L'huile a la capacité de pénétrer dans la structure du plumage des oiseaux et dans la fourrure des mammifères marins ce qui cause que leur capacité isolante est réduite. Ils sont également plus vulnérables aux fluctuations de la température et leurs capacités locomotives sont plus lentes et ils se déplacent avec plus de difficultés. L'huile peut endommager les reins, altérer la fonction de la foie et irriter le système digestif. S'il n'y a aucune intervention humaine, les animaux affecté p! ar une flaque d'huile peuvent mourir très rapidement. Jus! te comme un nombre énorme de méduses et de tortues tout au long de la plage sur une île à l'extrémité méridionale du Mississippi. Quoiqu'il n'y ait aucune certitude que les animaux meurent en raison de la flague d'huile qui a fui du trou de forage de British Petroleum endommagé, nombre d'animaux morts trouvés jusqu'ici dépasse la limite normale.
