Fay and alligators
by Livia Cseresova

Florida currently has to deal with Fay, a tropical storm. And not only that because of Fay, the Floridians got rain four days in row; they also have to struggle with alligators, snakes and others. The animals are now everywhere- in the streets, in backyards or doorsteps.

Steve Johnson, national guardsman, saw an alligator just floating around. His reaction was: “I said, 'The heck is that?' and there was an alligator floating by. I took my flashlight and was like, 'You've got to be kidding me, a big old alligator swimming around here.'”

All the 67 Florida counties are homes for alligators. And as the state officials said, the people each year complain about the alligators quite a lot. The floodwaters now increase the risk of their meeting with people. The reason is that these animals have to look for a safe, dry place to stay at through the storm.

Recently, as in the rain emergency the residents of Florida are trying to clean up their homes several alligators were spotted. Also, snakes were spotted on some places. In backyard of Carla Viotto in Indialantic, snakes were drifting around in 4 inches of water. She said “It looked just like a junk yard.”

In some places, the most severe flooding was even 5 feet, especially along the Atlantic coast from Port St. Lucie to Cape Canaveral. The estimated building damages would cost, according to Brevard County officials, about $12 million.

The storm Fay killed at least 20 people in the Caribbean and two in Florida. It is actually just the fourth storm ever, which hit the Florida peninsula with tropical storm three separate times.
