Chris Cantell Discusses US News: Ivins is guilty, according to the government

Bruce Ivins, the scientist who committed suicide just about a week ago was the sender of antrax letters killing 5 people, as the prosecutors stated on Wednesday. They claim that in his lab, he had a container of the deadly spores and access to the distinctive envelopes used when mailing them.
The government of the U.S. released documents to support its theory. The documents were the mixture of DNA evidence, suspicious behavior and speculation.
The lawyer of Ivins believes that the government “is taking a weird guy and convicting him of mass murder” with no actual evidence. He said: “They didn't talk about one thing that they got as result of all those searches. I just don't think he did it, and I don't think the evidence exists.”
According to the documents, though, FBI got false anthrax sample from Ivins to throw investigators off his trail and didn’t explain for his late laboratory work hours in the time of the attacks. Also, he apparently immunized himself against anthrax and yellow fever in September 2001, just a couple of weeks before the anthrax attacks.
U.S. Attorney Jeffrey Taylor admits, however, that the evidence is mainly if not completely circumstantial but believes it would be sufficient to convict.
Recently, there were released records, which describe the scientist as a very troubled person. An official declaration claims that “He said he was not going to face the death penalty, but instead had a plan to kill co-workers and other individuals who had wronged him.”
For a long time the main suspect was Ivins’ colleague, Steven J. Hatfill. Now it was found out he was wrongly suspected and the government paid him $6 million for it.
But back to Ivins. In an e-mail he sent shortly before one of the attacks, Ivins wrote that “Bin Laden terrorists for sure have anthrax and gas and have just decreed death to all Jews and all Americans. “ The letters said: "WE HAVE THIS ANTHRAX . . . DEATH TO AMERICA . . . DEATH TO ISRAEL.” Just a coincidence?
Taylor doesn’t think it is just a coincidence and says that they are “confident that Dr. Ivins was the only person responsible for these attacks. “
