9 More Lives Blown Out in Fires
by Milota Sidorova
Fires that have destroyed more than 86,000 acres in the largest National Forest in California, Shasta-Trinity National Forest have probably burned out nine more lives. Tragedy of crashed helicopter, launching on Tuesday's night has overflown all American media.
Eight firefighters and a pilot, members of 1,200 crew operating in the area of turmoiled Iron and Alps complex have been missing after the helicopter crashed down and exploded. The bodies haven't been found yet, despite of located wrecks. Authorities said, it all happened in very remote, steep terrain.
Crew was aiding to rescue injured ones from the region. Nine available helicopters couldn't reach them until the the early dawn, so the troop had to stay in the mountains overnight.
Troubled helicopter Sikorsky crashed down before eight o'clock in the evening, probably hitting a bunch of a tree, as Richard Schroeder, 42, said in a phone interview from his hospital room in Redding that it seemed the propeller of the helicopter hit a tree as it was taking off.
Four more people have been rescued from the very same area. Three of them found their shelter in UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento and the last one strikes for his life in Mercy Medical Center near Redding. Two of them are in critical, the other ones in serious conditions.
However, due the exceeding temperatures and unpredictible winds the fire still rivals troops operating about 70 miles north of Sacramento. On many places firefighters have to retreat in case to save their own lives. Situation has already paid its debt – one of the most picturesque location of Feather Falls area of almost 2,500 acres burnt in few hours. Outside Yosemite National Park, a fire that has burned more than 50 square miles is nearly contained. It's destroyed at least 28 homes.
California's striking large scale fires periodically and every year pays black tribute to those, who died on duty. Apart of all emotions, tears and loss of their beloved, one must say, that it was a fight worth living. We all have to admire them.
