Will be a deal reached?
by Jana Passova

After three month is there a chance to finish strike of Hollywood writers. A strike caused that entertainment industry get into troubles. A collapse of negotiation between negotiators and guild Dec. 7 didn't help the problem as well. Everything began with requirements of the alliance to take off the proposals for animation and reality shows unionization. After that moment negotiation has got to the impasse. This problem was finally solved by the director Guild of America and studio chiefs own talk Jan. 17 and a deal was announced. This deal is able to cover some of the digital media goals. Informal talks with top media company executives began on Jan. 23. Everything still turns around a new agreement, which needs to be signed. It is supposed to cover managing all the work for film, digital media and TV. There has been reached a breakthrough in contract talks between studios of Hollywood and writers in strike that could lead to a tentative deal. People connected to this problem are talking about a huge progress that both parties have made. It is possible that a deal will be announced in a short time. But the specific details haven't been noted yet. Most important thing writers want to achieve is higher payments for a work they have done. The deal needs to be approved by a majority of guilt members. This is the only way how it could be signed with both parties. Now the situation looks like guilds are decided to keep away from Grammy Awards. A union refused to cooperate with the Golden Globes ceremony and Oscar is going to be organized with or without support of union.

Study looks at Crops' effect on weather
by Zuzana Krskova

Regional weather patterns and wildfires may be caused in the planting corn and soybean crops, says NASA funded study at South Dakota State University.Geoff Henebry, SDSU professor said, that many factors can change the seasonal cycle of exchanges of water and energy between the land and the lower portion of the atmosphere.Dried- out grasses could become a problem in region with a relatively high sustained winds. This is the cause of large grass fires and many fire departments don't have experience in this. Such fires were common thousands of years before Europian settlement.Switchgrass is highly flammable than prerennial grasses, which use more water early in their growing season."So the idea is to get out ahead of the curve and try to envision some of these things rather than being in a reactive mode somewhere down the line after they become a problem." Wimberly said.Switchgrass are used for biofuel & which is expected to be more widely used in future ethanol production. Study is timely because it involves feedstocks such as Switchgrass. The goal of researchers is not to predict exactly what will happen, but to make reasonable assumptions so potential consequences can become a part of discussion. Research could lead to the development of practices to decrease such risks.

Record Deficit Brought By George Bush's Budget
by Milota Sidorova

As the period of the current American President George Bush is coming to an end more and more black holes in the budget appear. Despite of rosy economic forecasts, that deficit in 2008, which represents $410 billion, will be reduced to $407 billion in 2009, they somehow, don't count with the war costs in Iraq and Afghanistan. More like a fairytale sounds Bush's promise from 2006 of a $48 billion surplus by 2012. This calculation was based on the fact, that the war would cost only $70 in 2009 and nothing after it, that is for rights protecting American policy, of course unimaginable mystification. To cover the deficit, Bush tries to cut off more than 151 programs to save $18 billion next year. Feverish searching for funds interferes all sorts of Medicare and popular domestic programs, for example, decline a universally supported food program for poor pregnant women and their children, cutting off the medical programs for veterans, followed by freezing of research grants. He motivates his budget message by creating the conditions for economic growth, keep taxes low and spend taxpayer dollars wisely or not at all. More pragmatic is the opinion of Sen. Judd Gregg of New Hampshire, top Republican on the Budget Committee. He says that the deficit is not going to decline with the stimulus package and with the continuing war costs"In fact it's going to get very serious when you're hitting $400 billion deficits," he says. What is for sure, except of a comfort of new presidential office, the former head of the U.S. will face very difficult situation of managing the total federal debt of $5.9 trillion in 2009& including foreign governments.

Wildfire in Texas
by Lenka Lehenova

When we read daily newspapers we find there a lot of news from all world. I am always sad if I read about countries which are fighting with some disaster like hurricanes, volcano, famine, spate or wildfire. It is like in the movie but the difference is that news from papers are real and it doesn't have to finish with happy end. People from Texas can feel one of these horrors. Occupants have to fight with wildfire and try to save their lives. This wildfire burned and ravaged almost 30 square miles. People stayed without their houses and they lost a lot. It is horrible situation, everything what you owned has been burned & clothes, toys, furniture, money, house! just everything. Victims tried to save how much how was possible and during the sifting through their damaged houses, a few more blazes exploded. But some of them have happiness in calamity. For example Gary Karr is very grateful that although he lost a lot, he saved a lot too. Wind is the biggest enemy because fire can spread quicker and it can also cause that there are more parts which are plagued. All helicopters are in preparedness and all habitants who can help try to fight with it. Suddenly, in this horrible situation, people became friends, try to help each other and cooperate because they have the same aim & to overplay disaster. We can say that Texas is used to pass this catastrophe. Also one of the largest wildfires was in South Texas where 12 000 acre has been damaged.

Water supply threatened in the U. S.
by Zuzana Moravcova

Human activity is responsible for yet the worst climate changes in U. S.Moreover, due to human influence, these changes are likely to accelerate. On Thursday, Science magazine published a study that predicts "a coming crisis in water supply for the western United States."The researchers of Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego, compare climate changes that would have happened with natural fluctuations over time, to climate changes caused by greenhouse gases and other emissions from vehicles, power plants and other sources. They found that human activities, such as driving, that release emissions including carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases into the atmosphere, are responsible for most of the changes in temperature, increasing mountain rain or still decreasing snow pack and river flow.Within two decades, the West is said to be faced with a water shortage to meet the seasonally changing river flow, and to have difficulties with transferring water from agriculture to urban use."The climate's changing in the West. We've known that. The question is why, and no one's really addressed that. The answer is it is us," said climate expert Tim P. Barnett, leader of the researchers. Cars, air conditioners or dishwashers might be very helpful for us consumers, but it has a destructive impact on the nature.

Check points requirements
by Claudia Sonea

Starting Thursday new rules went into effect and U.S. and Canadian citizens entering the country are no longer allowed to simply declare to immigration officers at border crossings that they are citizens, but they must show proof of citizenship, such as a passport or a "trusted traveler" card issued to frequent border crossers if they are over 19 years old. For many people the new regulation was a surprise and caught them unprepared at the border, still the customs officers let them pass with just a warning this time. In spite of the new rules and the fact that your papers of identification must be checked before passing the border, the delays were minimal across the country and that most of the drivers had the documentation required, according to customs officials. U.S. Customs and Border Protection spokeswoman Kelly Klundtn said that it means more work, but the people are very compliant and things will go smoother in time. Many travelers were ready for the new rules, or say they've grown accustomed to carrying citizenship documents since security tightened after what happened on September 11. Those entering Buffalo, N.Y., from Fort Erie, Ontario, through Peace Bridge had proper documentation, while smooth travel was reported at many crossings along the northern and southern borders. At the borders on water people who were unaware of the changes after their identities were confirmed were allowed to pass, while in and many points the customs officers offered a grace period and handing out fliers explaining the changes. These rules were introduced due to Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative, which Congress approved in 2004 and eventually they will get tougher for U.S. citizens entering the country from Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean. Only until June 2009 the driver's license-birth certificate combination will be allowed on land and sea crossings, but it will not be void anymore after the law is fully implemented. Mexican citizens will continue to have to present valid passports and visas, while Canadian citizens will need one only after next year. Some businesses and lawmakers are afraid that the new rules might discourage people into making the trips between the countries. Stay connected to see if they were right or not.

Bush's budget for 2009
by Barbora Misakova

Policy is not a game. It is a fight where the strongest one wins and who can enforce his ideas and persuade others about their accuracy. When a politician is not able to persuade the opposition, it can lead to various unexpected problems. Bush who is trying to spur economy and safety of the US projects $3 trillion budget. Democrats don't want to support his spending plan and they are prepared to wait even until the new president takes office. As it was in the past, Bush wants to invest big amounts into national security & defense spending should be higher about 7 percent what presents $ 515 billion and homeland security should increase in more than 10 percent. President wants some extra money get to education programs and into inspections of imported food. On the other hand there are some cuts prepared too. The bulk of government programs should be frozen at the level they have now, and Bush also applies for almost $ 200 billion in cuts in the major health programs such as Medicare for retirees or Medicaid for the poor. Democrats attacked this plan and they say it's just a continuation of failed policies and Kent Conrad, Senate Budget Committee Chairman said this budget doesn't have "priorities of the American people." Another reason for criticism Bush's planned budget refers to wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. While total costs for these wars cost the US government about $ 200 billion in Bush's budget there are only $70 billion suggested in 2009.Bush includes into his budget also request to hire new diplomats which should help to the State Department doubled its size. For State Children's Health Insurance there is prepared $19.7 billion increase & this amount was arranged between Bush's $5 billion request and $35 billion increase requested by Congress. Bush also counts with some spending in federal support for poor students but some of education programs should be eliminated.

Chris Cantell Discusses US News: The photo of dead Ernie Pyle
by Lenka Filipova

The photo of dead Ernie Pyle, the very famous war correspondent, has emerged recently as a bolt form the blue. It captures the corpse vested in Army fatigues, helmet on his head, boots untouched. The body lies in its reposeful position, hand hooked holding his military cap. At the first sight it might seem that the soldier is napping. Alas, the thin seepage of blood reveals that the person in the photo is dead.Ernie Pyle was killed in World War II in 1945, firstly buried among soldiers on Ie Shima. Four years later his body was transported to the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl Crater, near Honolulu. In the meantime, the photograph has never been published. It underwent verification, but none of the eight military repositories and history centers could distinguish the photo claiming that it was unknown to them. Even the most probable museum, the National Archives & Record Administration, proclaimed it had never seen the picture. The photograph was published by Richard Strasser (88), a naval officer at retirement. He was given a packet of pictures by George, a friend of Ernie Pyle. As Richard said he remembered the Pyle's visit shortly before he was killed. When Strasser returned to civilian life he decided to find out the content of the envelope. He was taken aback, of course, finding the photo of dead Ernie Pyle. He knew his widow was still alive and was contemplating whether to send it to her. Finally, he decided not to do so as he had confused feelings about it.According to Mark Foynes, director of The Wright Museum of World War II, the photography means a real treasury to American history.

The miracle - baby survived the tornado
by Zuzana Moravcova

In tornado-damaged Tennessee, 11-month old Baby Kyson Stowell was lying face down in the mud, over 100 yards from the place where his house once had been."It looked like a baby doll. He was laying there motionless ... and he took a breath of air and started crying," said David Harmon, a firefighter who was shocked, when he checked for a pulse and the baby suddenly cried.Despite of very low probability of finding any survivors, Harmon with the team had earlier combed the field looking for survivors, but the first time, nobody had noticed the little baby, that later turned out to be alive. Well, if they did, but as it was in a grassy pasture strewn with living room couches, strollers, and children's toys, they thought it was a doll. The body of Kyson's mother was found nearby in the field, among brick post office that was blown to smallest bits, houses wiped to concrete slabs and splintered lumber and bricks tossed by the tornado."If you look, you can find an inspiration or a bright spot. The child will always be a reminder in this community of that message," said Reverend Doyle Farris, and added that the child was a reminder that people "should never give up, even in the midst of the worst storm." Except of scrapes and gashes on his cheek and by his eyes, the Baby Kyson is now fine. He was discharged from a hospital, from now in the care of his grandparents.

US under twister attack
by Claudia Sonea

Macon County Tennessee was hit on Thursday night by a twister that killed 14 persons and that in the context of a series of tornadoes rumbled through the South. The death toll (referring to Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, Kentucky and Alabama) eventually rose to 59 on late Friday, while the number of homeless and hospitalized persons is yet unknown. The first wave of funerals began Friday. Macon County was under curfew from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m., while people from the worst damaged areas had to show identification at checkpoints to get to their homes. The National Weather Service said that in Tennessee a single tornado caused 24 of the storm deaths. Nearby Gallatin, Summer County, the twister first hit and then moved quickly across a small part of Trousdale County, continued through Macon County, Kentucky. Many showed bravery in such desperate moments like the nurses from Mountain View, Arkansas, who held onto 17 patients at Stone County Medical Center, even as the wind tore the roof from the building. In Macon the grief and desperation made Pastor Welch to step in and counsel people, comfort them. Unfortunately he was not outside danger and together with Julie, his 11-year-old daughter, Hannah, and his 14-year-old son they were hospitalized after their car was hit by a semi-struck. He kept faith even on the death bed and in an interview with The Associated Press at the center Thursday, he continued to comfort people and encourage them to pray. Dozens of people came at Welch's church on Thursday evening and prayed for the soul of such a brave man and his family. Bishop Richard Wills of the Tennessee Conference of the United Methodist Church promise that the work of Welch will be continued and said the grief counseling ministry will go on. President Bush wanted to express his solidarity and on Friday morning flew over the damaged area in a helicopter, accompanied by both of the state's senators and three congressmen, declaring that these major disasters will be covered by for federal funds used to help local government and some individuals. In the memory of those who lost their lives, for the safety of all those that are still missing let us pray to God and ask him for pity and protection. In moments like these faith is all that remains to people. This should be a moment of silence!

Is it a curse?
by Barbora Misakova

I think a Buddhist wouldn't be very enthusiastic from my words, but I have to say that sometimes it looks like everything bad and tragic was happening to me and my relatives. These days has such a feeling probably every single person living in Macon County, Tennessee where last few weeks its inhabitants are just jogging on. After 14 people killed by twister another sad accident hit them. Reverend Michael Welch was after tragic effects of twister trying to help everyone in this district by setting up church as a crisis center dedicated to families. After this noble deed, on Thursday he and his family died when their van was struck by tractor-trailer. Sometimes people just think and ask themselves "where is the end of this?" and after this question usually other shocking and horrible thing happens. This Friday number of dead people killed by tornadoes increased on 59 and lot of people had to be hospitalized or became homeless. The same day the first funerals began. For someone could the view of colorful and aromatic bouquets full of sunflowers, red roses, pink carnations or lilies seem romantic, but as soon as you notice all those framed photographs of unknown people now lying in the coffins prepared for the eternal sleep, a big sadness and regret suddenly come. You don't have to know Jimmy and Dana Cherry who had been buried with their 11-year-old daughter Emmy, you don't have to know Bobby his wife Diane and daughter Gilda, but you will probably feel touched by these tragic deaths anyway. No one stays cold-hearted in this situation. President Bush arrived on Friday and flew over damaged area with state's senators of Tennessee and Arkansas and other three congressmen and declared that federal funds will be used for helping local government and individuals. People are helping each other too and they are doing it in the best way they can & saying prayers and kind words, helping with food and clothes. And even though they are doing their best, no one can turn back time to bring their beloved back to life.

Immigration tune
by Claudia Sonea

The race for the US presidency is getting tighter and tighter and the candidates have to deal all sort of problems. One very important issue on the debate list and that is mostly approached by Republicans is the illegal immigration and what must be done to solve it once and for all. Most of them are in favor of a crackdown and after the election the chances of a change in immigration policy are high. No matter who will be elected, the future head of state will definitely have to deal the problem of immigration especially in the context that US natives are tending to become a minority. According to the Pew Research Center immigrants will increase the population of the United States between 2008 and 2050, pushing whites into a minority. Their projections that were released on Monday show that by 2050 US population will reach 438 million from 296 million in 2005 with more than 80 percent of the increase in immigrants number and the babies they give birth in US and that will make up nearly one in five Americans. Whites, currently around two-thirds of the US population, will become a minority (47 percent), while the Hispanic population, currently the largest minority group, will triple in size and double in percentage to 29 percent in 2050, the report said. Another minority that will double in percentage is the Asian one; only the black population will remain the same (13 percentage). The projections however are not perfectly accurate (based mostly on trends over the past 50 years) and the new measures that the candidate elected as US President will take might change the entire course of actions. Although US is a country created by the mixing of cultures, nations and colors, the inhabitants feel like something must be done in order to prevent an outcome like the one predicted by the Pew Research. Don't go away and take care to whom you give your vote, it is very important.

U.S. hopes to add more than 1000 diplomats.
by Zuzana Krskova

U.S. president George W. Bush outlined on Monday, that more than 1000 diplomats would be added to the U.S. foreign service under a plan to improve language skills , training and security.George W. Bush's budget calls for hiring an additional 1076 people for the foreign service, including 300 slots for diplomats to study challenging languages like Chinese, Arabic and Urdu.50 slots would be to provide additional political advisers to senior U.S. military commanders around the globe.About 150 slots would be for diplomats to get mid- career training.200 places would be set aside for diplomatic security, reflecting increasing dangers to American officials overseas. 20 places for public diplomacy would be also set aside.Another 250 slots are assigned for an "Active Response Corps" of people with special skills who could be deployed within 24 hours. Other 100 people would help to manage their activities. The budget proposal, which covers the fiscal year that begins October 1, 2008, seeks funding for 300 additional officials at the U.S. Agency For International Development aid agency.Bush's record 3,1 trillion USD budget plan is likely to be ignored by Congress, which is controlled by Democrats and already looking ahead to November elections. His long- term projections are mostly academic since he's leaving office next January. Also it would produce federal deficits, despite Bush's attempts to impose politically wrenching curbs on Medicare and eliminate scores of popular domestic programs.

Missing Lake Tahoe skiers are safe and sound
by Zuzana Zelenakova

Patrick Frost, 35 and Christopher Gerwig, 32 were found safe on Monday morning, spotted by a Placer County Sheriff's Department helicopter just two miles from Alpine Meadows ski resort. The two skiers went missing near Lake Tahoe after the savage winter storm, which brought heaps of snow into the area. They were last seen on Saturday morning at the ski resort mentioned above, which is situated west of the lake. The two skiers, both of them San Francisco dwellers, have survived by making a snow cave and cuddling together for warmth. "They said they kind of got their knowledge of building snow caves from the Discovery channel," said sheriff's Lt. Jeff Ausnow. Fortunately, they had some Power Bars with them so they were not starving either. They melted snow in plastic bag to have something to drink. After the rescue team found them they were transported to Sutter Auburn Faith Hospital. According to the hospital spokeswoman they have suffered no grave injuries, only minor frostbite. "We never ever considered giving up. We were going to make it," Frost said as they left the hospital. When the storm left Lake Tahoe area it moved towards Southern California, where subsequently 53-year-old Ellen Coleman of Riverside was reported missing on Sunday on Mount San Jacinto. She was about to hike to the summit. The woman was found Monday on the mountain. Snow and ice was also the reason for closing the Grapevine section of Interstate 5, which passes through the mountains about 65 miles north of Los Angeles. It was reopened Monday morning.

New mortgage- help plan
by Zuzana Krskova

Treasury Department and the Department of Housing and Urban Development will announce plan called Project Lifeline on Tuesday. A new plan involving six big home lenders, is about to help at- risk borrowers with all types of mortgages, not just high- cost subprime loans.Seriously overdue homeowners will be allowed to suspend foreclosures for 30 days. During that time they should try to work out more affordable loan terms. The participants of this project are Bank of America Corp., Citigroup Inc., Countrywide Financial Corp., JPMorgan Chase & Co., Washington Mutual Inc. and Wells Fargo & Co. Producers of this plan hope, that those six large mortgage lenders will persuade more lenders to sign on. Project also includes investors and nonprofit groups. This new plan is used to seriously delinquent homeowners whose mortgage are 90 or more days past due.The fact is, that even some people with good credit have gotten behind on their payments, because of home prices falling. Borrowers signed up for adjustable- rate mortgages and those allowed them to make smaller, steady payments for several years until a higher fluctuating interest rate kicked in.Many homeowners now owe more than their home is worth. It's because the prices have plummeted. Some borrowed assumed, that they could sell or refinance their homes before higher payments began. But banks have tightened their lending practices, and left also people with stellar credit struggling with higher payments. The Hope New alliance helped nearly 8 percent of subprime borrowers in the second half of 2007, what represents †545,000 subprime borrowers with spotty credit. It is more than its original estimate.150,000 borrowers were helped through permanent- loan modifications, such as lower interest rates. 395,000 negotiated repayment plans. They often involve a borrower getting back on track even after missing a few payments.Even after loan workouts, there are still many borrowers unable to keep up. Preferable is a full- fledged refinancing at a lower rate.

Tornadoes hit again
by Tatiana Hadarova

Huge disaster caused by several tornadoes on Tuesday again reminded people of the the La Nina phenomenon. Despite all the warnings more than 55 people were killed by twisters rushing across Mississippi, Arkansas, Tennessee, Kentucky ans Alabama. According to statistics it was the nation's deadliest barrage of twisters in almost 23 years. Meteorologist said that although twisters of that force are quite uncommonly in this part of winter and in such northward states like Kentucky, they cannot blame global warming. Scientists claim that it was quite warm weather in this part of U.S. and so in mixture with La Nina it might have caused tornadoes of such power. They also said there were many factors to create a tornado on Tuesday, like strong warm moist air coming from the Gulf of Mexico, warm air near the grounds, high winds and strong storm system coming from the west. La Nina is not straightly guilty of causing the tornadoes, but it helps to shift the jet stream by pushing storms from the West and moisture from the Gulf into a collision over the South. Like its "brother" El Nino it happens only every few years but changes the global climate for several months which leads into floods or drains over the world, but mainly in Pacific region. U.S. meteorologists said, that people should get used to this because the patterns that lead to tornado outbreaks seem to be here for a while. Hopefully there won't be any other dead after the Tuesday's disaster.

Neverending Circle of Snow Calamities on the Eastern Coast?
by Milota Sidorova

A shot of chilly air along with continuously falling snow showers will visit the Southeast and the Northeastern coast of U.S. Travelling through the mountains of Tennesse and North Carolina may be very hazardous, whilst risking slipping accidents on the frozen surface of the roads. That is what the American weather forecast says these days. While Europe gets a glimpse of following spring, America suffers by heavy snow storms, that, like it seems, don' t have enough. Tireless snow showers in the states of Alabama, Georgia, Illinois, New Engeland and New York caused massive crash accidents, traffic jams, electricity cut offs. The situation seems to be unbearable. Due the scabby weather, schools in South Michigan, Nothern Indiana, Ohio and New York reported that they had to be closed three times this month already. The roads and the sidewalks are pure ice, and that' s what rescue services can hardly cope with. "Snow, you can plow that right off," said spokesman of Southern Illinois University, Rod Sievers. "But the ice was just brutal, brutal." This winter seems to score with neverending circle of people slipping and falling on the streets, car crashes, traffic jams that last several hours and already two dead cases. First victim, a 71 old woman, that died in her mobile house after crashing down with a tree, broken in the storm. Police of Northern Ohio also reported the death of a man, who obiit in the snow covered wreck on the highway. Ubiquitous snow has broken the historical records even on the places, where the winter had always very mild climate. For instance, Madison, Wis. reported more than 77 inches by Feb. 12, and Boston overcame its record about 19.3 inches, spanning more than 49.6 inches of snow. "Enough already!", people say, declaring that the situation is getting worse because of no breaks among the snow storms. Finishing this blog, one must mention well-turned expression of Roland Swanson, a simple American citizen, who spoke out for the reportes whilst waiting to cross the street. "It's been endless, it just keeps coming. It's killing us by the inch."commented sored Swanson.

Power outages hit Flordia
by Claudia Sonea

A Romanian proverb says "the country is burning and the old brushes herself", that is the problem of Florida's authorities that cannot decide what really caused Tuesday's outages. The opinions are divided into those who blame Florida's electrical grid and those who think that mostly the bad weather caused all the chain of misfortunes. The main issue was that a nuclear plant automatically shut down on Tuesday, cutting power to up to 3 million people from Daytona Beach through the Florida Keys. There were no safety concerns and although many areas were hit hard, the outages were short lived and only about 20,000 people lacked electricity during the evening commute home. Still traffic was the one most affected, in the Miami area many stop lights being left briefly without power. Another problem was created by an equipment malfunction in a substation near Miami disabling two power distribution lines between Miami and Daytona Beach, and in response, Florida Power & Light's Turkey Point nuclear plant south of Miami stopped operating around 1 p.m., according to Nuclear Regulatory Commission spokesman Kenneth Clark. The company however suspects something more because such equipment failure should not have caused the widespread blackouts. Dick Winn believes that the grid problems caused both Turkey Point reactors to shut down and are responsible for the entire mess and agreeing with Homeland Security Department spokeswoman Laura Keehner the outages are far from being connected to terrorism and it is not even an act of vandalism like that from March 2006 when tiny hole was found in a coolant pipe at the plant. The federal nuclear commission says the causes are not yet known and the initial drop in voltage from outside Turkey Point was worsened by the two reactors shut down that according to Florida emergency management officials cut power to about 2-3 million people. Everyone expects now for the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, responsible for electricity grid reliability, to find out if there were any violations of federal grid reliability rules. Miami and the southeast portion of the state were the areas where the outages were more concentrated, but were also reported in the southwestern and northeastern parts of the state determining several hospitals to switch to backup generators and schools were scheduled to be dismissed on time.

American economy falling into recession
by Zuzana Moravcova

The centerpiece of U.S. government efforts to rescue a national economy, that is slowly falling into recession. The main goal is simple - to make people spend more money. But this apparently easy target is harder to achieve than it might seem. Why should people start spending more money than they are used to? Everybody knows what they can afford, have no other option than live according to it. People with invariable income only rarely exceed their usual expenditures. But if you want them to, you should, well, except of literally giving them some extra money, give them a motivation.Congress, President Bush, the Federal Reserve and Wall Street came up with a slightly unusual way to motivate them. Recently, Bush signed legislation to rush rebates ranging from $300 to $1,200 to millions of people. Firstly, they must file their 2007 tax return. The authors of the idea believe the people who receive the rebates will not be able to resist spending it.However, according to a research, only 19 % of respondents are planning to actually spend the money, while the rest of them claim to save or invest it, or, mainly, just pay off the bills. "We have come together on a single mission ╉ and that is to put the people's interests first," said Bush, who called the measure "a booster shot for our economy". It might appear as an easy solution, but it naturally evokes a question & Where will the U.S.  government get billions of dollars to pay for the rebates from?  Altogether, it is estimated to cost about $117 billion over the next two years. The government will have to borrow more money, enlarging the budget deficit. The obvious gameness of this decision is an unmistakable proof, that the necessity of rescuing the already wobbling economy is urgent.
