U.S. greenhouse gas emissions dropped in 2006
by Daniela Simkova

U.S., the biggest polluter in the world has dropped the gas emissions last year and plans to continue in this successful decrease. The greenhouse gas emissions lowered by 1.5 precent in 2006, "This puts us well ahead of the goal I set in 2002 to reduce greenhouse gas intensity by 18 percent by 2012," said the president of The United States of America, George Bush. Mr. Bush determined his main goal in the statement: "Our guiding principle is clear: we must lead the world to produce fewer greenhouse gas emissions, and we must do it in a way that does not undermine economic growth or prevent nations from delivering greater prosperity for their people." The statement is becoming true, even the economics of the states is flowering, the production of the greenhouse gas emission is lowered. Department of Energy said: "Favorable weather patterns, where both heating and cooling degree-days were lower in 2006 than 2005, and higher energy prices, were the primary causes of lower total energy consumption." Josh Dorner, a spokesman for Sierra Club, the group of environmental specialization, striked onto weather: "It would not be a good idea to put your bets on the weather as a way of reducing emissions." Mr. Bush will though do everything possible to fight against the greenhouse effect.

US facing the hurricanes
by Claudia Sonea

On Friday the Atlantic season, which lasted between June and November, was officially closed. Despite alarming predictions, only one hurricane and a minor one at that will have hit the US, therefore the second straight hurricane season had less activity than in 2004 or 2005 (U.S. was hit by one devastating storm after another, including Hurricane Katrina): 14 named storms, five of them hurricanes, two of them major. Government scientists predicted that the storms would have an impact between 13 and 17, but all the 14 named storms barely managed to touch the low end of the estimation and the five hurricanes didn't even reach the seven to 10 forecast, while the major ones were below three. Colorado State University weather researcher William Gray forecasted 17 named storms, including nine hurricanes, five of them major, with a strong chance that a major hurricane would hit the U.S. coast. However, only Humberto, a Category 1 storm, hit Texas and Louisiana in September, being the first hurricane to strike the U.S. in two years. Only one death was registered and the damages were fixed to $30 million. He was farther off mark, but government specialists were also by estimating 13 to 16 named storms, eight to 10 of them hurricanes, with four to six of them major. Instead, there were nine named storms and five hurricanes, two of them major. Gerry Bell, a hurricane forecaster at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, explained that La Nina, a cooling of the water in the Pacific that normally boosts the formation of hurricanes, had weaker effects and that is why the season was nearly normal and it is the second year with this normality, after 2006. Nevertheless, he warns that since 1995 the Atlantic is believed to be in a more active hurricane period, thus next year the cycle might get worst. His warning comes in forecasters and emergency managers' support who are worried that people might show increased skepticism when they will advise them to stock up on food and draw up their hurricane evacuation plans for next year, according to Craig Fugate, director of the Florida Division of Emergency Management. All in all, the government's forecasts are still valuable and people can count on them to prepare for hurricane. Don't sleep on one year or you might just well wake up without the other. Stay connected and watch the latest weather forecast.

Red Hot Flea Left Homeless
by Barbora Kasparova

As the destructive fire hits Malibu during the weekend leaving almost 50 houses destroyed, many celebrities are forced to leave their residences. The statistics only report material damage; no one was seriously injured or killed thanks to the mass evacuation of more than 10 000 people, among whose many were Hollywood celebrities. According to the early investigators' statements, the fired was originated by people. The bass guitarist from the rock band Red Hot Chili Peppers Michael Balzary, or Flea, was among the unlucky ones. His house was Hot indeed; it was among the 49 that were burned down to ashes, or in his own wording according to the report by Los Angeles Times, "burned to a crisp", as his text message reveals. (http://www.latimes.com/news/local/la-me-flea8,1,3949239.story?ctrack=2&cset=true). It was the same house he bought last year for more than $ 10 million. Ouch! He was not reachable after the report appeared in the news. His fans are left to hope, he was wise enough to have his property insured. To sum it up, the plus is no one was killed, and the semi-plus is that people who lost their homes are most probably those who will be able to recover soon, especially since the governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, has promised help to get them back on their feet. Good luck!

Malibu hit again
by Claudia Sonea

Malibu, the famous city of California, was struck on Saturday by dozens of wildfires pushed by the powerful Santa Ana winds. After the tragedy that happened a month earlier in the area due to another wave of wildfires, authorities were cautious and ordered the evacuation of more than 14,000 people. However the fire extended only on 4,720 acres since early Saturday and according to Ron Haralson, Los Angeles County fire inspector, about 40 percent of it was put off by the water-dropping helicopters deploying over the fire zone. The fire broke out along a dirt road off a paved highway and was caused by humans, said investigators' spokesman county Fire Inspector Rick Dominguez who also added that there is no prove if it was intentionally or not. However, the roadside area, considered by neighbors to be a popular spot for late-night outdoor partying by young people, was surveyed by the sheriff's deputies. Despite the fact that hundreds of firefighters and equipment from throughout the state had been positioned in Southern California for most of the week because of the predicted Santa Ana winds, more than fifty homes were destroyed Saturday by the fast-moving wildfire, while other 27 were damaged. Also fifteen helicopters and 15 airplanes, including a retardant-dropping DC-10 jumbo jet, helped on Saturday the 1,700 firefighters at the extinction of the fire. Still, the fact that Malibu is a city with houses into deep and narrow canyons along 27 miles of coast at the southern foot of the Santa Monica Mountains, does make it the pefect location for wildfire and make it harder to extinct them. In 1993 a blaze destroyed 388 structures, including 268 homes, and killed three people, while last month there was a similar incident on the 20. The fire is expected to be contained until late Tuesday, according to officials' statement. Furthermore, most of the evacuated people had to permission to return to their homes or to what was left of them. Stay connected and show your support with what ever you can towards the victims of the incident.

Black Friday may not be so dark this year
by Corina Ciubotaru

Christmas is coming, the weather gets colder and shoppers begin their yearly frenzy, waking up in the middle of the night to make sure they are the first through the doors at Wal-Mart or Target. It is expected to be a very slow holiday season when it comes to sales, primarily because of the recent scandals involving lead-tainted toys from China, which led to massive recalls and damage to the image of companies like Mattel, Hasbro and Toys 'R' Us. This forces toy companies to resort to huge discounts and offers, while consumers seem to focus more on other types of entertainment tools, like game consoles and video cameras. There is no new item from Apple, like the iPod was a few years ago, but Nintendo's Wii is probably going to be a big success during this holiday season. This period is said to be a good indicator of how much people will buy in the following year from a given store. The first Friday after Thanksgiving is known as "Black Friday" and for some, doing their holiday shopping during these days is a part of the holidays. It is a time when shops run out of stock and people run out of money after queuing since the wee hours of the morning. Some may wait to see just how big the price cuts are before rushing to stores, but according to a recent survey for the NRF, 77.8 million said they may shop before Sunday, compared to 55.1 million who said they will surely shop.

Thanksgiving celebration
by Natalia Holvova

American Thanksgiving day has few hundred year tradition in this continent. History of the day when they wish to give thanks or be thankful is connected with life of the first greenhorns coming to the new country. As they didn't know how to survive in the country, they needed someone to explain them how is it going on there. Authentic citizens showed them how to treat the country, so the country can consequently enrich them. Eventually they knew how to cultivate the land and as a thank they prepared celebration with next year harvest they produced themselves, for their teachers. Since then Americans celebrate the Thanksgiving annually. The celebration looks much different nowadays. There are still traditions such as turkey dinner with some other traditional food additions within the families but there is also huge commercial meaning of the holiday. The most famous is the Macy's Thanksgiving parade in New York City with enormous helium balloons of all the cartoons every kid knows. The experience is amazing. There are a lot of famous people invited to perform a little piece of their art and thousands of people take a part in long parade going through the center of the city. The most important and vital part of the Thanksgiving is somewhere else though. After big parties in the cities, after celebrating in the towns, people go home and make a traditional dinner. That is the part where they can get silent and thank for their lives, for their families, for their homes and food they have. Because the world can be also poor and cruel and there are a lot of people who miss the basics for living. It is important to realize that all we have, we need to thank for! I guess that is the first meaning of the Thanksgiving Day and I hope there are still people who don't just loudly celebrate on the streets but also celebrate inside of them, and in the quiet thank for all they have.

Everglades project under money pressure
by Natalia Holvova

Everglades is the swampland area in Florida that includes unusual wildlife that inhabits this place. There are also species such as egrets, rare orchids, alligators and panthers living in Everglades. Also huge amount of water reservation is located in the area that is now threatened because of the luck of money for its restoration. The federal project that was approved by the U.S. government in 2000 to save and protect the area that is getting smaller and smaller because of building of dikes, dams, and homes booming in Florida had to face difficulties and unpredictable situations that cut down finances intended for the restoring the swamps polluted by urban runoff and farm fertilizers. The problem means ecological disaster! Of course seven years ago Americans didn't have economical problems and national budget debts that make priorities different. American war in Iraq gobble crazy amount of money from federal treasury. Hurricane Katrina caused huge damages in the city of New Orleans that need to be rebuilt so people have place to stay. There are so many more important things to fix than saving swamps right now. Are the Everglades going to wait until government find the solution for everything else and then proceed to restoration? Are threatened native animal species going to be able to survive without federal help? How the things that exist only few years got the anterior position than the land that has been a part of Florida's wildlife for hundreds of years? Hope! That can be a motto for Everglades. Hope can bring old fame back into the swamps also in the world of everyday unexpected situations.

Interesting business
by Jana Kokavcova

One young woman from Kansas wanted to know how to make her own internet page. It was just an experiment. She though about it and then she decided to make one selling page & selling tumbleweeds. It was only a joke, because who will buy something such good-for-nothing like a tumbleweeds are? She was very surprised when someone read her internet page and made a purchase. She was really fascinated, because she though she will never sell any tumbleweed. But she sold. And she is still selling a lot of them. Is it possible to sell something so bizarre and extraordinary, something what you really would not need in your common life? We can only say: Yes, it is. Who are the people who buy tumbleweeds? Maybe you think about it and talk to your own mind "they must be really crazy" or "how could I buy such beautiful and special decoration?" . Who knows? People are very different and everyone is special person, have special characters and personality. One loves flowers and pictures on the wall and one loves maybe tumbleweeds. If you would like to buy something so extraordinary and if you would like have it at home as a decoration, you should visit webpage of Linda Katz and it is possible to order some tumbleweeds. How much they cost? Hmmm… If you are not very choosy, you could buy the smallest one. It costs $15. Bigger one costs $20 and the biggest tumbleweed $25. Is it too much for you? Then you are not a scientist from NASA, because they spent a lot of money to buy these extraordinary things from Kansas farm. But they really need them for their researches and researching projects. Are you a director? Some directors have special requirements to make a film. Film "Neverland" use a lot of tumbleweeds. And where are they from? Yes, tumbleweeds farm in Kansas. So Linda is lucky woman, because she really don't know how and she get a lot of money for something that she has in her own hometown & near her nose.

Problems of one ZOO
by Jana Kokavcova

Do you love animals? I am sure you do. Were you anytime in ZOO? I am sure you were. Did you enjoy the visit of ZOO? Maybe and maybe not so. Did you think about the animals in cages? Did you think about their lives? Did you? Maybe. But it is not so important topic for you these days, I think. There are some more difficult and more important things in your personal life. And sometimes you only didn't have a time. Sometimes you need just a minute. It is not so much. Just think about animals in ZOO and their problems. One little boy threw toy to bears in the cage. Bear ate it and died. Maybe it is very sad to say, but really true. It happened in ZOO in Buffalo in U.S. This ZOO is one from the biggest ZOOs in the country. And it was most pretty and healthy. What do you think about it now? I am not from PETA. Really not. But I have feelings and I am sad when I see these situations in ZOO. Three bears died in one ZOO. It is maybe a problem of this one ZOO, but really? ZOO must have special expert veterinarians that can help the animals to be healthy and happy, I think. Does this Buffalo ZOO the experts? I am not sure and maybe because all of that I have said PETA protests. ZOO accused PETA of "gross misrepresentation of facts". And said that people in the ZOO make everything for animals and it will not change. But is it really love to animals have them in cages and visited them in zoos? I don't think so. I think they should stay in their natural environment and live there in happiness. I am not such a natural person, no… I love rush of bigger cities, but I think "live and let live", because the nature has its own rules.

Another one of Bush's aides is leaving
by Corina Ciubotaru

Following a series of departures among Bush's aides, which included Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, top aide Karl Rove and press secretary Tony Snow, homeland security adviser Fran Townsend has also announced her departure in early 2008. Her replacement will be announced before the departure because the President needs the two to overlap, so as not to leave the Homeland Security Council unsupervised in the middle of all the wars where the U.S. is involved. Fran Townsend has led the Council for 4 ½ years and now plans to find a job in global risk management, after struggling for months with the decision of whether or not to leave the White House. Her replacement will have a difficult task in making sure no terrorist attacks occur in America during the upcoming elections. Madrid and Glasgow have been attacked after their last elections so the White House advisors want to make sure nothing happens between the vote and the inauguration ceremony. Townsend has not ruled out the possibility of her returning to public service some day, even under the lead of her former boss and mentor Rudy Giuliani. The two speak very highly of each other's work, and the security advisor declared her passion for public service. Still, she apparently needs to take some time off and take care of her two small boys, leaving national security matters in the hands of someone else. Hers is a tiring job that some say should be integrated in the National Security Council, but that she wants to keep separate, in order for the Homeland Security Department to have better communication with the President.

Virtual fence as better solution
by Natalia Holvova

Election fight in the U.S. has already started. The most popular leaders so far are Hillary Clinton for Democrats and Rudy Giuliani for Republicans. Every one is trying to persuade the most of the American citizens to vote for them. They use promises, families, statuses, experiences, attitudes and a lot of other strategies to get as many electors on their side as possible. Some important politic issues appear as factors to rice candidate's preferences. One of the significant questions is illegal immigration to the country mainly from South America and Mexico. Giuliani opinion is to have virtual fence along the U.S. - Mexican borders. He prefers to build physical fence only in some places where needed and use high-tech monitoring system with more border petrol agents along the whole border. This non-radical measure is criticized from many sides. Some of the rivals claim that this is not enough and it is not going to solve or stop illegal immigration to the country. Giuliani is the most experienced leader in the group of candidates though and as former New York City mayor he had to deal with illegal immigration all the time. He was also leading the city in the time of terroristic attacks during September, 11, 2001 what makes him dignified and solid challenger in coming presidential election. He has experiences from functioning as United States Attorney, or working in Regan Justice Department. He is not only experienced leader in high positions, he also knows how to react during unexpected situations or depressions.

Two Years from Katrina
by Barbora Kasparova

August 2005, almost 2000 dead, billions in damage, hurricane, news coverage, drama... More than two years afterwards, New Orleans does not make it to the national news any more. What's left of the "jazz Mecca" now, has the situation anyhow improved? What happened to the people? Almost half of the city residents who left after the catastrophe never came back. Despite the reconstruction efforts, there is still a lack of affordable housing, proper health care is not provided, and the crime rate in 2007 is almost ten times New York City's homicide rate over the same period. (http://www.realtruth.org/articles/070831-004-tyak.html). According to a recent government study, there are twice as many people mentally ill and suicide rate has grown dramatically. Despite all of these facts, some residents have not lost their hope and are gradually working in repairing their city, in fact, took the initiative into their own hands rather than relying on help from the government. Among many others, New Orleans enterpriser Pamela Pipes has put together a self-guided tour called: "Hurricane Katrina: Self-guided tour - witness devastation and progress and learn her lessons for all of us" to bring tourist into the city that was once a big tourist attraction. As Pamela stated for the Financial Times: "This is a citizen-led recovery "(http://search.ft.com/ftArticle?queryText=pipes+pamela&aje=true&id=070829000317&ct=0).

Let's save the loggerheads
by Natalia Holvova

There is special kind of turtles living mostly in the California and Hawaii cost. They are called loggerhead sea turtles. Loggerheads are already classified as threatened species under the federal Endangered Species Act, but the environmentalist and nature protectors think that higher level of protection is needed. Loggerheads are characterized by a lagre head with blunt jaws and five scutes along the middle of the carapace. Adults grow to an average weight about 100 kg, and can reach 1 m in length. This kind of turtles is very unusual and they are the only living member of the genus Carreta. Characteristic feature about them is their nesting habit almost always at the same place where they were born themselves. "Normal part of the population" almost never think about some turtles living far away in the deepness of the sea. Fortunatelly there are some special people who sacrificed their life to protection of endangered animals that are in jeopardy of their extinction. Living in the innocent ocean is not as easy and natural as it was before. Turtles need to face the danger of fishermen who very often hurt them with loaded fishing hooks or mesh them into their nets that they put along the beaches in the length of 60 miles or more and so there is possibility to get enmeshed in the net and become unable to get out. The nature is different today and aminals have much more difficult life than ever. It's up to us, who make their lives more complicated, to help them survive and enable to propagate themselves freely and safely.

Never ending war
by Claudia Sonea

The fight between the Democrats and the White House on Congress' Joint Economic Committee, on the war in Iraq and Afghanistan and their costs seems endless. The report released by the Democrats on Tuesday includes interest payments money borrowed to pay for the wars, lost investment, the expense of long-term health care for injured veterans and the cost of oil market disruptions and show a total double than that asked by The White House of $1.6 trillion. From 2002 until 2008 there were a lot of money spent with the war and the American economy is pretty shacked. Only with the war in Iraq was spent $1.3 trillion for this period and to this cost a family of four would contribute with $16,500, according to the report. The costs are expected to grow in the nearby future to $3.5 trillion between 2003 and 2017. By presenting the report in the Congress the Democrats, including Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid also criticized Bush's war strategy, offering this way the chance for the White House to say through press secretary Dana Perino that the report is subjective, politically motivated and not elaborated in cooperation with the Republicans. Israel Klein, spokesman for the Joint Economic Committee, stopped the word confrontation between Perino who was defending Bush and Reid who stated the new demand of money reveals the lassitude of the President to admit his failure and change the course of wars. He said that the White House is only trying to deflect the attention from the real problem, because the nonpartisan CBO (Congressional Budget Office) was always used regardless of which party is in the majority. Despite the protest of the Republicans, the report presented real facts about the oil prices that grew from $37 to $90 a barrel and can slow overall economic growth if that chills spending and investment by consumers and businesses. No matter what the White House says, the economical situation in US is suffering a lot of changes that have a terrible effect on the Americans. Rep. Carolyn Maloney, D-N.Y., the panel's vice chair, confirmed the statement of Joint Economic Committee Chairman Sen. Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y. that Iraq war has already cost too much. The never ending war is no highly debated not only on the battlefield, but also behind the curtains.

Bill on Veteran"s Funding an Issue
by Barbora Kasparova

Before Veteran's day, George W. Bush urged the democratic Congress to pass the law that would add $3.7 billion to his request for funding programs for veterans. As Congress failed to do so, some expected the president would touch the subject in his Veteran's day speech in Texas on Monday, however, he directed his whole speech towards the veterans and their families. The Congress not only failed to deliver the bill to Bush, despite Bush's request to have it before Veteran's day & "The best way members of Congress can give thanks to our veterans is to send me a clean bill that I can sign into law" (http://www.mlive.com/newsflash/washington/index.ssf?/base/politics-10/1194760142251670.xml&storylist=washington), but they also tried to attach bill on spending on education, health and job training programs with it. Some republicans stated it was an unheard-of practice and accused the democrats of choosing politics over heroes. A republican member of the House of Representatives Phil Gingrey has even proposed a resolution to stop the political game in the future and to make sure that the veteran funding bill could only be voted on all by itself. (http://www.townhall.com/Columnists/PhilGingrey/2007/11/12/veterans_funding_by_veterans_day) Let alone the political character of the dispute, according to the National Alliance to End Homelessness, the increased funding is necessary. Their figures show, that more and more veterans become homeless over the years. In 2006 for example, they estimate that 336,627 of veterans were homeless (http://www.endhomelessness.org/content/article/detail/1839). However, should we not rather apply what wise men say, that prevention is the best cure…?

Hiding as a strategy
by Natalia Holvova

There is always some kind of mystery or shadow above American way how to do politics. And you don't have to a genius to figure out that hiding is probably the best way how to look better in the eyes of the world even though American look doesn't seem as nice as before. Attraction of the American dream is getting pale and the American power is no more impressive. One of the American judges ordered the white house to back up all its e-mails! Doesn't it sound logic and standard? The White house is probably one of the most important places in the world with correspondence of the most important documents and information. It seems quite natural to me that it needs to be protected as well as able to prove evidence in case that it's needed. There is another moment of looking at this type of security protection. President Bush and his cabinet don't agree. There some doubts about voluntary destroying of the unknown amount of the e-mails with important data. Why someone doesn't want to allow protecting one of the most important places in the world? Is the White house e-mailing so intimate and private? Or is the hiding the strategy how to keep people quiet, happy and satisfied, aware of the government policy that is protecting themselves at any time under any circumstances no matter what kind of tactic and resources are used? And what are the facts that they don't want to be seen or backed up for the future?

Pope to Raise Church"s Popularity in the USA
by Barbora Kasparova

Pope Benedict XVI. has announced his first visit to the USA. It will be the first time in tvelwe years the head of the Catholic Church sets his foot on "the new continent". His predecessor, John Paul II., had visited the country seven times, as enjoyed popularity among the members of the Church as well as the rest of the population. Benedict XVI. has already met with George Bush Jr. earlier this year, during Bush's visit to Italy. With the majority of the USA being Christian & that is over 80 per cent of the population, according to the Association of the Religion Data Archives (www.thearda.com) & only 26 per cent of the U.S. citizens claim to be adherents of the Roman Catholic Church, and, in fact, the church is loosing its popularity due to the child abuse scandals in 2002 and a rather conservative approach to many controversial issues (namely homosexuality and birth control), not forgetting that only JFK, out of all the American presidents so far, was a member or the Roman Catholic church. As the statement of Pietro Sambi, the papal ambassador in the United States, revealed, one of the purposes of pope's visit is evident : "We should make the visit of the pope a moment of assurance to those who have left the church in the last year, an invitation to return," (http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/nationworld/chi-pope_tuenov13,1,2172260.story)

Bay Area oil spill leads to massive investigation
by Corina Ciubotaru

A ship colliding with a bridge in San Francisco's Bay Area has caused the worst oil spill in nearly two decades. The 58,000 gallons of fuel leaking from the ship's tanks killed marine life, closed two dozen beaches and piers and led to a detailed investigation. Officials in the Coast Guard are now trying to determine what exactly caused the accident, and their biggest bet would be on human error. They are checking to see whether this error was due to the language barrier between the English-speaking captain and his Chinese crew, even though all crew members are required to speak English. A parallel investigation is to be conducted by the National Transportation Safety Board, in an attempt to determine how much this event was influenced by factors like fatigue and weather and how the authorities should respond to this type of emergency in the future. The crew is prohibited from leaving the ship, MV Cosco Busan until the investigation is over, but they have not been officially arrested. Apparently, their ship crashed into one of the towers supporting the Bay Bridge, and since the ship had no obvious technical flaws, a human error is the most likely cause. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has declared a state of emergency and over the weekend, 20 boats were called in to clean up the water, but cleaning the entire area, including beaches, is expected to take months. The oil spread from the Bay Bridge to the Golden Gate and sickened thousands of birds in the process; 200 birds were rescued and sent to a rehabilitation center.

A wave of waivers
by Claudia Sonea

The Associated Press stumbled on the news that the Pentagon is on the hunt for easier ways for people with minor criminal records to join the military due to the higher recruiting demands. The increasing number of waivers for bad behavior such as trying drugs, stealing, carrying weapons on school grounds and fighting to 18 percent this year, reflects the fact that the ranks are being built more and more people with criminal background, health problems such as asthma or flat feet, to low aptitude scores and even for some tattoos. Pentagon's goal is to make waiver requirements consistent across the services like the Army, Marine Corps, Navy and Air Force and also to reduce the number of small misdemeanors that lead to the signing of such a document. However, they worry that the more soldiers with criminal records recruited, the less discipline they will have. Lt. Gen. Michael Rochelle, the Army's deputy chief of staff for personnel, is sure that the change is necessary, because it is not normal for people that committed indiscretion in their youth to be punished and also waivers require more time, paperwork and investigation, from detailed health screenings and doctor referrals to testimonials about past bad behavior. There is an increased demand in uniform waivers that usually differs from one institution to another. For example the Marines require a waiver for one-time marijuana use, while the other services don't. Therefore it is not benefic in the context that 69 percent of conduct waivers for Marines who joined from October 2006 to June 2007 were for previous drug use. The army is facing a 12 percent of waiver for previous drug use, while 71 percent enhances serious misdemeanors like thefts worth more than $500, any incident involving a dangerous weapon on school grounds, or minor assaults and fights. On the other side, those that were juveniles and the charge was dismissed after restitution are affected by the waver. Also in Air force 77 percent of the waivers were for conduct, in opposite the Navy had a decline in waivers for conduct to 40.3 percent in June. Due to the war in Iraq and Afghanistan the Pentagon recommended the Army be increased by about 65,000 soldiers to a total of 547,000, and the Marines be increased by 27,000 to 202,000. These numbers can be fulfilled either by doing more recruitments, either by convincing some of the older soldier to stay in the battle. Therefore it is expected for the wavers demands to decline. Still, the relaxing of regulations is not well regarded. Despite the small number of people who are unjustly required to sign a waver, there is a the problem with the discipline that according to Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, represents an issue for most officers. He agrees that the waivers won't help to keep the soldiers under control, but definitely, something must be done. What will happen? Don't go away, more to come.

Natural Calamities
by Claudia Sonea

On Saturday there was a storm that hit New England and although it did not caused any injuries or deaths, three limbs were brought down and 80000 homes faced the darkness due to a black out. Until Sunday more than 17000 NStar customers had to deal with the same problem according to official statement. Caroline Allen, company's spokesperson, said that the crew is delaying because of the extensive damage to trees and electric equipment, ending with the assurance that by Monday the power will be restored to all its customers. The storm is a remnant of the hurricane Noel and affected coastal residents from Massachusetts to Maine. It struck earlier Haiti and registered 57 deaths, then 84 in the Dominican Republic; also Bahamas and Jamaica faced the hurricane that is thought to be the deadliest of the 2007 Atlantic hurricane season. According to Lt. Richard Scherbarth of the Centerville-Osterville-Marstons Mills Fire Department the fire of the Barnstable house was caused by a candle used due to the blackout. However no one was injured, only a cat and a dog died. In Yarmouth, Capt. Allen Bent stated a house fire on Sunday started due to the use of a fireplace. Still most of the outages took place in Cape Cod, Plymouth and Marshfield. In Maine the 5 inches of rain storm combined with 6 inches of snow in the northern end of the state led to the outage of 9000 Bangor Hydro Electric customers. Nature is still on rage and hits hard the US nation. The tropical weather has this features and the situation has worsen because of the environmental. Let's pray for all those that are in the storm's way and have to deal with situation after it passes.

Paul Tibbets, Enola Gay bomber, dies
by Nina Gotzmannova

The World War II didn't end in 1945. As long as the last soldier, the last victim, the last eyewitness and the last general will be alive, memories on the war will be still in their blood and on their minds. One of the key persons of 1945 dies on November 1. The pilot of the first aircraft which dropped an atomic bomb, the man who pushed the button, dropped Little Boy and killed 140,000 Japanese in Hiroshima, the man who helps to end World War II, Paul Tibbets, 92, made his last flight to heaven. And with his death part of the history dies too. Paul Tibbets was born to be a soldier. His middle name was Warfield. His mother probably took a great care about him and made him a great childhood, because Tibbets wrote her name into history books. The name of his plane carried name Enola Gay, her name. In 1937 Tibbets joined the army as a flying cadet. In 1942 he already had a reputation of the best flier in the Army Air Force. Confirming the reputation, Tibbets served as a personal pilot to Dwight Eisenhower. His brilliant piloting abilities were the reason, why he was chosen to perform the most delicate operation in history & dropping the first atomic bomb. Although his act of dropping the bomb killed more than 100,000 people, he said he never regretted it and he was repeating it all his life. His reason is simple. If the attack wouldn't be done, Japanese would probably invade to United States and kill millions of people all over the world. His act was therefore perfectly acceptable.

In little danger.
by Barbie Kunkelova

The roads, railways, airways, waterways, canals, pipelines and highways that make up the infrastructure in the US are often taken for granted. Yet a disruption to a single one of those can have crucial consequences across others. In Minnesota, close to Minneapolis, a busy bridge Interstate 35W collapsed during the rush hour on August 1. It carried 141,000 cars every day, 13 people died. In 1990, the government rated it "structurally deficient" because of corrosion but they didn't think of it as being unsafe. DOT (Department of Transportation) presented an estimated figure of the costs stemming from the collapse. The total (the emergency response, site cleanup, inspections, traffic diversions and the constructions of a new steel-deck truss span) will cost the government $393 million (according to USA Today). It should be all done (with one of the most important Minneapolis arteries back in function) by the end of 2008. However, the collapse drew attention to the overall infrastructure in the US. And what did the investigators find out? 35 busy bridges across the country need a construction pretty badly, plus the roads and utilities and other basics. The government decided to focus on bridges similar to Minneapolis'; it is 700 of them in the US. Thousands of US' bridges are between 30 to 70 years old. The oldest ones need a reconstruction the most since the trucks used to be much lighter back in those days. The Senate excluded $1 billion to fix bridges. Now, working on the Minneapolis bridge, the project manager, Jon Chiglo, will be motivating his workers 6 days a week, 20 hours a day & until the end. They will try to get done ahead of schedule, that could earn them a nice amout of money, $27 million.
