Sorry, it takes much too long!
by Milota Sidorova

BP owned underwater well is effectively dead, but the real machinery has just started. The company that's been charged up to $20 billion escrow to pay back thousands of thousand residents in four American states is prolonging the process. Once mentioned in Kafka's buraucracy machine novel called the Castle is taking power over the process. BP has to cover all expenses with cleaning underwater oil spill that is literally beyond human and economy reach. But it also has to repay residents, small businessmen, fishermen, sailors, tourist attraction owners and many others. The crucial industry in the area has been attacked – fishing and tourism has been threatened. And now ! it takes much too long to get those funds back. Perhaps, it takes more than it's acceptable and this is the moment, even BP officials realize the fact. Ken Feinsberg of Gulf Coast Claims facility has recently agreed that the process was constantly delayed. According to his own words he had raised people's expectations and then wasn't living them up. He addmited that he underestimated the time element. Just a week ago the same excuse was published in Associate Attorney Generla Thomas J. Perrelli's letter – Perrelli called the pace of claim processing „unacceptable“. Being sorry, however is different than to do something against to it. BP is dancing at the edge of the knife, because its trust have been irreversibly undermined and its market value went to the half price. And it's still facing public dissatisfaction over complain processing. Feinsberg has called a press release over next weekend in which he promise to release more progressive details about ! „implementing new procedures“ and improving curren! t situat ion.

Escaping a certain death
by Milota Sidorova

Stories about natural catastrophes and all kind of disasters have invaded our movie business and we have to admit that we certainly got used to it. Images of burning landscape, floods, apocalyptical visions and escaping hero are quite familiar. On the other hand, they have become popular. But with a glimpse of irony, we have to admit that most of fans consuming these movies haven´t been exposed to the real danger in their lives, not once. Because what would happen if the chance to survive went to zero just this very moment? What could one do? How would it change our perception of life and dangeer, I mean real danger? Of course, according to statistics we can be overr! un by car every time we cross the street. The chance is one to thousand. Not that small, one could say. Although the chance the same thing will happen on a plane is lower, it can´t be forgotten. And from time to time we witness „the most tragic and awesome“ airplane disasters. Sometimes they reach our evening news, sometimes they make it even into documentary. But that´s the worst case. Passengers on Delta Connection Flight 4951 from Atlanta to White Plains, N.Y. are probably the happiest people in this world. Althought the right gear of the plane went out of control and the plane was about to crash, the pilot managed to land on John F. Kennedy Airport. According to official report landing gear sent sparks flying and left one of the plane´s wing was dragging along the tarmac. All 60 passengers and plane crew made it out healthy, though the panic and teror was in the air. The plane belonged to Atlantic Southeast Airlines.

What to do with Devils Lake?
by Barbora Misakova

Devils Lake – that is a devil of a problem of North Dakota. This lake is a slow-growing monster. Over the last 20 years it has steadily expanded and swallowed up thousands of acres, hundreds of buildings and at least two towns. As there is no natural river or stream to carry away excess rain and snowmelt, Devils Lake is getting larger and larger every year what makes downstream communities desperate. Joe Belford, a lifelong resident of Devils Lake spent most of his time seeking a way to control this lake and flooding it causes. “It is a slow-moving torture.” he said. Devils Lake with its nearly 7,000 residents is in constant threat. Since the water began r! ising in the early 1990s, more than 400 homes around the lake have been relocated or destroyed. While tourists are attracted by its 1,000 miles long shoreline and 75 feet deep and are enjoying excellent fishing or other recreational activities, residents are begging for help. Devils Lake which has nearly quadrupled in size since the early 1990s will probably grow on in next few years as scientists say there is no way to predict exactly when a normal weather cycle will return. By the end of 2010, more than $1 billion should be spend to ease the threat. As local officials say, the best would be to create a second flood-control channel and relaxing water-quality standards downstream which would allow releasing of more water. Working on the presumption that similar wet periods occurred in the Devils Lake many times during the past 2,000 years, building flood-control channel is the only possibility. But as Dick Johnson, mayor of Devils Lake said: “If they don’t do th! at, we are probably cooked.”

Čo robiť s Devils Lake?
by Barbora Misakova

Kým turisti obdivujú takmer 1,000 míľ dlhé pobrežie jazera a jeho hĺbku 75 stôp a užívajú si rybárčenie či iné rekreačné aktivity, obyvatelia doslova žobrú o pomoc.

Mexican Gulf case: „effectively dead“
by Milota Sidorova

Five months, probably the worst scenario of BP oil spill has been fulfilled. It has taken exactly five months for British oil company to cement the well once and for all. And this is the moment when the consequences can be translated into the language of numbers. For BP and residentials of four American states that were affected by the leak, it was a crucial blow, but for environment it was a death blow – more than five million barrels (210 million gallons) gushed into the sea. And while army struggled to located and diminish the oil layer on the water a dangerous underwater mass of oil was still out of human reach. Although scientists found new bacteria that was con! suming underwate oil and changing it into less toxic product, the damage can't be even numbered. The company now has to cover expenses connected with cleaning the Gulf, solve countless lawsuits and reports, billions of dollars in fines and harsh market response. The company has lost up to half of its share value equal to 70 billion dollars past months. But the well 5,000 feet (1,500 meters) underwater has been „killed“ and stable according to pressure test of the cement seal that was completed at 5:54 am. For the company, government as well as for any other affected organization and residentials it is a victory, though having more than a bitter taste. The case will remain open for months, perhaps years, since multiple outer and internal investigations are still in progress. A;though major blame falls upon BP, the company is blaming some of its contractors.

Hurricane Karl aiming at Mexican Gulf coast
by Magdalena Rosova

Hurricane Karl is ragging in the Gulf of Mexico and is expected to even strengthen more and then hit Mexico's coast. The U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida, thinks that Karl may become a major hurricane with winds of 110 mph or even higher. The government of Mexico issued a hurricane warning for the 300 kilometer long coast in Veracruz state. The warning says that the hurricane could cause landfall between Veracruz city and the oil hub of Poza Rica. Over the past few weeks southern part of Veracruz state has suffered severe flooding and now there is serious threat of hurricane in the north. The state is preparing sleeping mattresses, bottled water, shelters an! d other supplies for refugees. Tall dangerous trees in Veracruz city were cut down to not become flying debris. Fishermen and operators of small tour boats are preparing for the hit as well and they are pulling their crafts out of the water. Inhabitants are preparing their houses to stand the hurricane. Some have boarded up windows of their hoses with sheets of plywood and reinforced doors to not be blow away by the wind. Edilberto Peralta, civil defense director in Tecolutla, said they were preparing and warning people to avoid any loss of human life. Tecolutla city was lashed by Hurricane Dean in 2007 and in 1999 it was seriously hit by a tropical flooding. Officials are considering possibility of evacuating some residents. Thursday afternoon, hurricane Karl was 165 east-southeast of Tuxpan and it was moving westward at speed about 12 mph.

San Francisco's gas explosion tragedy!
by Barbora Misakova

It was nothing he wouldn’t be used on before! Arnold Schawarzenegger, mostly known for his role of Terminator, got a close look at the site of the massive gas line explosion in a San Francisco suburb. But this time, it was real. His first official stop after a weeklong trade mission in Asia was the San Bruno neighborhood where nearly 40 homes were destroyed and at least four people were killed. Not only people from this suburb credited emergency personnel for what Schwarzenegger termed “quick action”. In front of one of rescued houses were sign saying: “Thank you all firemen and police officers for everything!” The governor Schawarzenegger spok! e to President Barrack Obama and requested a federal disaster declaration. In the meanwhile, federal investigators are examining whether Pacific Gas & Electric workers followed proper emergency procedures after a gas transmission line exploded. Investigation should explain why it took the utility nearly two hours to turn off the gas that fueled last week’s devastating blaze. Tests should also reveal if the explosion was caused by a small leak or a “catastrophic failure”. State and federal lawmakers have called on PG&E to upgrade any other pipelines in heavily populated areas, as many of them can only be closed by hand – what is insufficient especially when tragedy like this one occurs. While people who lost their homes and relatives are crying, California Assemblyman Jerry Hill is drafting a bill that would require the utility to install automatic and remote shut-off valves to minimize future damage. But why are “preventive measures” alwa! ys made when it’s too late?

Oil again?!
by Barbora Misakova

And here we go, the question rose up again: Where is the oil? After the weeks of various researches and explorations which brought different (but all unbelievable) results, it is time to ask smarter questions. And one of them should be: what can we do with that oil? I would bet I was not the only one who disbelieved that oil which was leaking into the Gulf of Mexico for more than a month could simply vanish. New research confirms it when claims that far beneath the surface of the Gulf of Mexico, deeper than divers can go the oil from the busted BP well was found. On the sea’s muddy and mysterious bottom – there is the oil which was mysteriously vanishing! Samant! ha Joye, researcher of University of Georgia said that oil at least two inches thick was found a mile beneath the surface together with a layer of dead shrimp and other small animals under it. Although Samantha Joye expected to find oil on the sea floor, she “did not expect to find this much.” Even more worrying is the fact that oil was found on the sea floor as far as 80 miles away from the site of the spill. “It is kind of like having a blizzard where the snow comes in and covers everything.” said Joye. Ian MacDonald, biological oceanographer said the oil did not disappear but sank, however not all scientists agree with him. And that is the biggest problem. Chemists, geochemists, oceanographers, biologists and many others cannot concur in their opinions where did the oil go, not even which would be the best way to remove it. And honestly, I think these questions will never be fully solved!

Iran Released American Hiker, other two remain behind bars!
by Barbora Misakova

There is so much injustice in this world that sometimes my brain stops from it! Sarah Shourd’s parents and friends know what I mean. This 32-year-old woman was freed Tuesday after more than 13 months in custody in Tehran’s Evin Prison. Sarah together with her fiancé Shane Bauer and friend Josh Fattal were detained along the Iraq border in July 2009 and suspected of espionage. While two men remain behind bars, Sarah was after a $500,000 bail released. She met her mother and U.S. diplomats at a royal airfield in the capital of Oman. “I am grateful and I am very humbled by this moment.” said Shourd before boarding the plane in Tehran. Families of d! etained Americans say they were innocent hikers and if they did stray across the border into Iran, they did so unwittingly. Even though I believe in their innocence, I couldn’t stop wondering how could be these Americans so irresponsible and carefree?! They had to know what’s going on in Iraq and Iran and what would be their position of Americans in these countries. They can be happy not have been killed and buried somewhere in the mountains. Fortunately, they were “only” detained and now have to wait for court’s decision. But while Shourd’s bad health saved her (sorry) ass, Iran has shown no hints of clemency for the two 28-year-old men. “I want to really offer my thanks to everyone in the world, all of the governments, all of the people, that have been involved.” said Shourd. She also added she would turn her efforts to trying to win the release of her companions. Let’s hope this case won’t deepen tensions betwee! n Tehran and Washington even more than they are now.

Expecting fire!
by Milota Sidorova

It all turned to dust – means twice in case of nearly 170 exclusive houses in Boulder area of Colorado. Forest fire and heavy, dry winds endanger the area more than 20-miles wide in perimeter. Wildfire that hit the area on Monday, destroying 10-square-mile area is not likely to stop since winds reaching up to 60 mph are spreading heat and sparklings all around. Here it comes to evacuation. City of Boulder, having nearly 100,000 residents is on fire – red alert is mobilizing all its inhabitants. According to orders they are obliged to remove garden furniture, propan bombs and everything that could posssibly cause fire spread into the heart of the town. City emp! loyees are also mowing grass on public spaces, trying to eliminate this source of fire. Winds are going to blow hard. Boulder city is trying to avoid the fire in its historical center, it is also a home of the University of Colorado and the National Institute of Standards and Technology with precious equipments and research laboratories. There is one running atomic clock that maintain the official U.S. time. Both institutions are in potential danger, since they are situated on both sides of risky Broadway area. Two day fire has already become the most destructive fire in Colorado destroying the greatest number of homes. More than 3,500 residents are currently in temporary shelters or try to explore what has happened with their houses. And they do it on their own will. Many of them are complaining about lack of information and organization and most of them come on the area by hiking or on bicycles. Some get to know what has happened, but some stay and that makes the situati! on even more diffcult, in case the fire would hit again.

Three days after explosion
by Milota Sidorova

Three days after major pipeline crash in the suburban area of San Francisco and residents are finally returning back home. Or to places that once'd been their homes. Natural gas pipeline crash caused a crater up to 167 feet long and 26 feet wide, destroyed around 50 houses and left 60 injured people. Few people died, but officials still can't make an exact report since there are still two more people missing and various remains have been examined. Police has launched an investigation with an aim to detect the cause of the crash. However, the 30-inch diameter pipe will be replaced by new smaller pipe. This should lower the pressure and the volume of gas running through pipe! line. According official information the pipeline was installed back in 1948 and rested without major notice in increasingly urbanizing area. In real life a Master plan, the most important tool of urban planning should consider and register all technical infrastructure, including pipelines. And considering their scale it sets something like safety area or a distance that shouldn't be used for residential or business functions. But sometimes unknown, mostly old pipelines and infrastructure appear randomly in the ground causing significant problems, since engineers can't specify the source and the function of these lines and it is risky to simply cut them off. The question also remains why there was such important pipeline in such close neighborhood of residential area, running literally in front of the houses. The company Pacific Gas and Electric has to survey all its natural gas to prevent such catastrophes. But even now there are around 7 percent of gas lines labeled as ! „the top 100 highest line sections“ in California.!

Colorado in fire!
by Barbora Misakova

Fire is a good servant, but very evil master. Many of 3,500 evacuated from Colorado’s Boulder could convince of truthfulness of this saying. A wildfire burning in the canyons and steep mountains became one of the most destructive blazes in Colorado history. The reported loss of homes surpassed even that of the 2002 Hayman fire in southern Colorado – this time, in just three days at least 135 homes had been destroyed by blaze. While thousands of people are waiting for information if their homes survived this raging wildfire, aggression and anger is growing. And even though residents of four neighborhoods were allowed to return home today morning, it is not clear ! how many homes that involves and when will be the rest of people allowed to return back home as well. Firefighters are doing their best to hold any part of the 20-mile-long fire perimeter. “I understand people are angry, they are anxious, they want to go home.” said Boulder County Sheriff Joe Pelle. But as he asked people: “Please be patient with us.” Firefighters tried to take advantage of cooler temperatures and light rain, but it is not enough and firefighting costs are enormous high anyway – they have reached amount of $2.1 million so far. Fortunately there have been no deaths or injuries reported, but four people remain missing as some residents have stayed behind and risked their lives to try to save their homes. While 500 firefighters and support personnel are at the fire, crews are also dealing with downed power lines, debris, poison ivy and rattlesnakes. The whole situation is even complicated because of propane tanks situated in the a! rea.

If we just knew their stories...

Sometimes I ask myself what would I do if my city was facing some major natural catastrophe? What would I take away from my home if I saw a black cloud of smoke and fire coming from near fields and forests and I knew I would have only few minutes to pack my life into a bag?And then I realize it would be just me, few clothes and my family – the only thing and everything that matters. But then I realize I can be more than happy I am not facing this situation. This year we hear about horrible catastrophes of enormous sizes from each corner of our planet. Pakistani 17 million of people lost their homes due biggest floods, 700 people die per day in Moscow facing enormous f! ires and smoke, tsunami, tropical storms, earthquakes.Sometimes it's more than enough for one to bear. But these kind of things happen, but still they find a man unprepared. People who fled their homes become homeless or spend few days in temoporary shelters, mostly in some school or a hospital being totally dependent on food and water supplies. Sometimes I can't even imagine that – my rushing life pace wouldn't allow me to spend 24 hours without movement. I would have troubles being locked with hundreds, perhaps thousands of people in one sport hall waiting for information. What would I do then If I knew my home was burnt or taken away? Whom would I call? What would happen with my previous life, if the catastrophe would destroy most of the city? Where would I go?Most of the times, life goes back and people settle their homes, because despite they have lost buildings they keep their home in their minds and heart. But sometimes they are not that lucky. They have to leave ! once and for all – let's take just Chernobyl catastrophe! when on e nuclear break-down transformed thousands of miles of country into abandoned, desserted area of invisible enemy – the radiation. No one can return, no one wants to die and it will take several thousands years if the radiation level reduces down to its half power. I would become a refugee, forced to live in the world where nobody would listen to my story. I would become a label, negative number and a statistics for GDP...But this is not happening to me. Not now... Still there are million of refugees of any kind living in this world. Perhaps it is a time to think of their life stories, who they once were, how they loved or hated their home, country, political system, perhaps it is a time to see them as human and accept their values. They are everywhere – they are lying on the streets, begging for your change, sometimes mercy, they can be your neighbors or colleagues, they may run Chinese market or restaurant or they can be just your friends with a story you'd never! discovered...

U.S. facing increasing salary gaps
by Milota Sidorova

Dynamics of American job market are changing – only few days after August unemployment report and weak projections, new trends are appearing. But they may not be socially beneficial. Americans that are currently the richest people in the world may overcome major change in the society where the wealth will move on both sides – literally there will be a significant gap between classes. While job paid projections suggest the most skilled proffesions will feel salary increase, jobs requiring only average or lower education will move the opposite way. We are talking about salary increase between lawyers, doctors, software engineers, etc and significant salary drop fo! r clerks, factory workers, industry workers. They will move down to the lowest paid group of people who work as nurses, home aid care assistants and shop assistants. The fact the middle class will be eliminated is considerable threat for the society, if seen from more perspectives. It will deepen class differences and living standards gaps, followed by different taxation, economy and consequentially environmental issues. Unemployment rate reached 9.6 percent last month and has become a major topic of both parties running for November congressional elections. There is public benefit on one side, but also crucial exam of politics on the other side. President Obama has introduced a plan that would ease unemployment that didn't move under 9 percent in past 16 months. U.S. is preparing for construction of more than 200,000 kilometers of highways, 6,000 kilometers of railways in several major projects that should hire many who lost their jobs for instance in real-estate industry.

Gunman killed in the Discovery Channel hostage drama
by Zivka Deleva

After fours of hostage drama at the Discovery Channel in Silver Spring in Maryland, the gunman who was all wrapped in explosives was shot. The SWAT team succeeded to get rid of the man that held under hostage three people, employees in the world famous TV channel. The police officers tried with good will, first to talk to the man, but after few hours of bad communication, the forces chose the way to resolve the situation. It is good that there wasn’t any victim or injured. "For most of the time, the hostages were laying on the ground and he didn't engage them much other than saying on the phone, 'I don't care about these people” – the Montgomery County Po! lice Chief Thomas Manger said. The reason for this action was the gunman’s dislike of the popular show “Kate Plus 8”, because it promoted the population growing and that the world channel should have done more to save the environment and the planet. The 43-years old James Lee held three men – one security guard and two other employees. They had to lie down on the floor. The whole action finished after three hours. Afterwards, it was seen that Lee has been participating in different kinds of protests against the TV. What more to say, all kinds of diseases exist on the Earth. And if we used to think that such cases are normal only for the Hollywood movies, we were definitively wrong. No matter where you live, how developed your country is, you will find such examples. The black chronicle has become the breaking news on any channel.

Hurricane Earl to ruin Labor Day weekend
by Zivka Deleva

New dangerous hurricane Earl is threatening the Earth. The most dangerous places to be now is the East Coast and the North Carolina islands where a lot of US citizens spend weekend. This is especially a bad time for them, knowing that the Labor Day weekend which is very popular among Americans. Everyone that was surprised at the coast had to evacuate and the security officers advise people not to go there. State of emergency has been declared in the State of Virginia. Scientists say that the worst thing hasn’t passed already. That a new storm with disastrous rain may hit again. Countries like the US have the experience in handling such situations especially those st! ates that are so liable to hurricane and storms. Hurricane of such kind at the East Coast hasn’t happened since 1991, when it was called Bob. I guess Americans from this area are going to be disappointed due to the lost possibility to go to the beach. OK, maybe it’s time for some habits change, don’t you think? I mean, there are another who knows how many weekends that can be used to go with your kids, beloved, families and swim. Why should it only be for that celebrated holiday? The emergency services don’t force anyone to leave their houses. It is still people’s right to decide what to do. Unlike the hopes of the beach towns that now after the big BP oil spill they will have more tourists, I guess didn’t turn out good. Or, that old saying – don’t laugh at someone else’s unhappiness.
