First hurricane in 2008 Atlantic season becomes a threat
by Petra Kamenicka

On Monday evening, the first hurricane in Atlantic season of 2008, called Bertha increased in its strength, according to the statement of the National Hurricane Center. That is why Bertha was ordered on Monday afternoon into 3rd category- major hurricanes. Saffir-Simpson scale of hurricanes has five steps or categories. Category 3 includes hurricanes with a wind speed of 111 to 130 mph. This hurricane has achieved maximum wind speed about 120 mph. The intensity of this hurricane has increased more vigorously and swiftly, than analysts predicted. Bertha was formed in fer eastern Atlantic, close to a shore of Africa. On Monday evening, Bertha was located 730 miles east-northeast of the Northern Leeward Islands. In first forecasts, experts assume that Bertha will affect Bermuda because hurricane is heading that way. Hurricane will approach Bermuda at the end of the week. But in each case, it is difficult to predict the movement of hurricane. As National Hurricane Center announces:,,It is still way too soon to determine whether or not Bertha will affect Bermuda.” Fortunately, no increase in the strength of this hurricane is expected. As Daniel Brown, a forecaster at this center said, Bertha was expected to stay at roughly the same intensity. ,,It looks like it will remain over warn enough waters for the next couple of days. Conditions aren't going to change too much over the next couple days, so it will likely remain a strong hurricane,” said Brown. The shore of U.S. is not expected to be affected and endangered by this hurricane. Projections of 2008 Atlantic hurricane season, made by the National Hurricane Center anticipate 12 to 16 named storms, 6 to 9 of them will probably develop into a hurricane. The last major hurricane, that hit U.S. land was in 2005. Year 2005 was for U.S. extremely destructive and devastating, because U.S. was hit by three major hurricanes, Katrina, Wilma and Rita.
