Money, money, money
by Barbora Misakova
Abba knew very well what they were singing about in their famous song called Money, money, money. But sometimes it is not so funny in that rich man's world. Especially when those who are in need have no penny for living and others have too much. I can be very angry in such situations and I am sometimes very sad and disappointed when I can see how money change people around the world. From time to time I am feeling even desperate when I realize that without these colorful papers we couldn't live a normal life. Well, OK, not normal but at least more comfortable. It doesn't matter if it is a little kid forced to do a manual work for a big company somewhere in Asia, or is it an older teenager who just wants to earn something just to be a little bit independent. Money are everywhere, but nowhere at the same time. Money represent problems. As I said money occur where they are needed the least & like in the wallet of Paris Hilton. But in cases when these papers are really needed they are just missing. It is a long time ago when we heard about hurricane Katrina and damages its done. So how incredible is it when we still can hear about people living in government-provided trailers with no better vision for the future. Most of them are still desperate because they still don't have enough money for rebuilding their houses. And the latest investigation revealed that some of the homeowners got too much money. The average amount represents approximately $ 35,000, but investigation showed that some of them were much higher & sometimes even about $100,000 - $150,000. That's why there is an effort to run the Road home grant program which should collect millions in grant overpayments from those who got more money than they really needed. ICF expects they can collect from applicants total of about $ 175 million. Of course every coin has two sides. Frank Silvestri who is co-chair of the Citizen's Road Home Action Team is frustrated with ICF and the whole situation senses differently. He argues that ICF wants people to pay for the incompetence and mistakes of ICF and says that people already "rebuilt their houses and now they want to squeeze this money back out of them." Well I would say that ICF will have a lot to explain and I think this situation could last even longer than it is now. Sometimes I really believe, that money are not helpful but on the contrary & complicating our life.
