Security gone wrong.
by Barbie Kunkelova
The ban is not permanent, just inevitable. It will last only during the numerous investigations. Why were Blackwater's actions and services banned in Iraq? It all started in Baghdad on September 16, when a group of Blackwater's employees was escorting US Department vehicles to a building where a meeting with US Agency for International Development members was held. As they were heading North, an unexpected situation happened on the road. A small Toyota was approaching the convoy on the wrong, closed side of the road. The Blackwater's security guards gave out a warning (a whistle) & but the Toyota driver showed no sign of intending to switch lanes. The security people fired a couple of shots, stun grenades and a lethal fire. You see, Toyota, such a threat! The domestic police department officials took this all wrong too & they fired shots back at the Blackwater team. Blackwater team responded. There was fire everywhere; the inhabitants of the Toyota & a woman and a child & were burned alive, seventeen Iraqi soldiers were killed and other twenty four people injured. After such an "accident", there is no wonder the Iraqi government became scared even of their own security arrangements. What if the baby in the car was screaming for another doughnut? And its mom overheard the whistle and was only hoping for a turn, for a way out of the fatal Nisoon Square? Now, if the Blackwater loses its contract with the Iraqi government, it will put other security companies into sight (Dyncorp or Triple Canopy). The sight of guards in black outfits always made me shiver and surely this news didn't increase world's feeling of security at all.
