The freezing cold wave that hit the Central part of the US and Mideast last days has moved towards East. What caused massive flight cancellation in Chicago, what closed several highways in Minnesota, South and North Dakota, Iowa and Michigan has now hammered region near Ontario lake, Ohio, Pennsylvania and New York. Slowly progressing snow storm followed by blizzards and chill winds blocked highways also in this region. More than 300 people got stucked in their cars overnight and had to be rescued by the army buses and helicopters. The frigid night hit them about 65 miles from Detroit. Hundreds of schools remained closed or started late in the day. Heavy snow and freezing t! emperatures caused that many of the mountain ski centers had to be closed as well. So far no deaths or injuries have been reported although snow storm caused already 16 lifes in previous days. Highway closure was approved by state officials also in New York – two major roadways were out of order for about two hours Tuesday afternoon. The weather forecast is not optimistic – more than 10 inches of new snow has already fallen during the day and the layer between 1 and 2 feet are expected the next day. Rochester airport that was close to disputed highways however, didn't have any major problems. Although the track was covered by a new, compact snow layer, all flights went according to the schedule. The cold air has moved towards East, but one part of the freezing mass went deep South, reaching Florida. And now farmers fear for plants and new harvest, since Florida is typical by warm and tropic climate.

Biele Chicago. Hoci pre väčšinu ľudí toto slovné spojenie evokuuje niečo romantické a nostalgicky späté s nadchádzajúcimi Vianocami, ľudia v Chicagu a blízkych štátoch o snehu uvažujú inak. Najmä po kalamitách posledných dní. Severovýchodný región Spojených štátov zachvátila mohutná snehová búrka, sprevádzaná nízkymi teplotami a poľadovicami. Tie od sveta doslova odrezali východnú Iowu, juhovýchodný Wisconsin, severovýchodný Illinois a severný Michigan. Vytrval&#! 233; ľadové vetry zaviali cesty a zablokovali dopravu, snehová búrka zosilnela natoľko, že zastavila viac ako 1375 letov z chicagského medzinárodného letiska O'Hare a viac ako 300 letov z medzinárodného letiska Midway. Prospekty však nekončia víkendom – snežiť v tejto oblasti by malo aj dnes, pričom národný meteorologický ústav predpovedal novú vrstvu od 8 do 16 palcov. Ľahko si predstaviť dôsledky, ktoré toto počasie spôsobilo na cestách – doteraz boli nahlásené 4 smrteľné úrazy, niekoľko ľudí bolo zranených a autá dlhé hodiny ostávajú stáť v zápchach. Mnoho z nich vďaka nízkym teplotám nedokáže ani naštartovať motor, svoje si odnášajú aj batérie. Niektoré národné dia! ľnice ostali v nedeľu kvôli zníženej ! vidite&# 318;nosti uzavreté – je to prípad časti cesty č. 90 vedúcej na výpadovku 410 do Južnej Dakoty, ale aj mnohých iných ciest v Minnesote, Iowe a Michigane. Podľa oficiálnych správ správa ciest v Iowe za dvanásť hodín obdržala okolo 850 hovorov a sťažností – tímy, ktoré na cestách zabezpečujú prevádzku sú celý víkend v pohotovosti. Napriek úsiliu mnoho ciest ostáva zasypaných, prípadne zľadovatelých, často sa podarí spriechodniť iba jeden jazdný pruh – obyvateľom sa teda odporúča využiť inú formu transportu alebo lepšie – necestovať vôbec.

All white in Chicago. And while most of the world is looking forward for white Christmas in rather romantic mood, for people in Chicago and North Eastern region of the US it is rather a white nightmare. A major snow storm followed by low temperatures literally cut parts of eastern Iowa, southeastern Wisconsim, northwestern Illinois and northern Michigan from the rest of the world. Blizzards, wind chills and heavy snow layers created problems down on the ground, but also up. More than 1,375 flights had to be cancelled at O'Hare International Airport and more than 300 were canceled at Midway International Airport, says an official report. The national Weather forecast servic! es released blizzard and snow storm warnings also for Monday, expecting between 8 and 16 inches of new snow. One surely imagine how the weather literally stabbed the transport – around four deadly car accidents, major traffic jams and lines of cars unable to even turn on the engine due low temperatures. Ice cold air influenced engines, heating systems and batteries. Some of national highways remained closed for the day or held the warning of reduced visibility. That was the case of interstate 90 road to Exit 410 in South Dakota and many others in Minnesota, Iowa and Michigan. According to the news, there were more than 850 calls in twelve hours on Sunday – roadside assistance crews have been in emergency. Most of the roads remain snow-compacted, icy and very often reduced into a single line so people are advised to check for alternative forms of transport or better not to travel at all.

U.S. President Barack Obama met with GOP leaders for the first time since Congressional elections held on Nov 2nd. As it was expected he would be in a difficult position, after loosing Democratic majority in the House. Democrats lost easy passage for their bills and this was the time when the future of threatening gridlock had to be decided. Though both sides seemed to be polarized, the meeting had to outline the atmosphere of future cooperation. And according to observers, the mood was rather wary, but not frozen. Obama met with House Speaker-in-waiting John Boehner and Senate GOP leader Mitch McConnell who became the possible substitute for the authority of Sen. John McCain. Discussion pointed out several topics – U.S.-Russian arm treaty START that was signed by both Presidents some time ago, yet it had to wait for vulnerable passage through both parliaments. Although it aimed for reducing the amount of nuclear weapons on both sides, Republicans have suggested their ! disagreement with the treaty. The second major point was tax cut policies aprooved by Democrats – according to this bill, families with the income under $250,000 would get extended tax cuts. Republicans wanted either to stop it or impose the same reductions also on people with high incomes, so instead of progressive taxes they wanted equal taxes. According to official projections this could make a deal, if Republicans passed tax reductions for few more years with the label temporary and Democrats imposed tax cuts on everyone. This would be the compromise for both sides. But this seemed to be too much for a meeting with wary and still polarized sides. Although the aim was to get „comfortable with each other presence“ and several outputs were described, it was far from cooperation. Later that day Obama held a press conference about the meeting so did Republicans who returned back to the Capitol to express their impressions.

Did you know New York City cab drivers have a dress code? Hard to believe, but it´s true. Their 62-page manual includes section with regulations concerning the dress code, or better to say, what they cannot wear. Tube shirts, tank tops, bathing trunks are forbidden. The cab drivers´s dress code was first introduced in 1987 stating that sleeveless shirts, sandals or any shorts shorter than mid-tigh are banned. However, the earliest cabbies wore uniforms based on cadet clothes from West Point. By 1925, they were required to wear a knitted cap, white linen shirt, coat and a tie. Currently, cab drivers are facing fine of $25 if they fail to be „clean and neat i! n dress and person.“ The Taxi and Limousine Commission is scheduled to hold a public hearing on the mater December 16. "The TLC believes that a general requirement better states its concerns and that a detailed list is outmoded and impractical," the city agency said in a public notice on its website. "The TLC believes that the public is entitled to drivers who present a neat and professional appearance." However, taxi drivers, most probably, will not like this kind of restrictions. “What was it about? Somebody wore shorts?” asked Bhairavi Desai, executive director of the New York Taxi Workers Alliance. “I would be concerned if the idea of professional attire is left to the naked eye to decide.” “I’m not sure if that’s a good or bad thing,” he said Graham Hodges, that author of a book Taxi!
